Hollywood Walk of Fame names 2007 honorees

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rapper and producer Sean "Diddy" Combs, rock disc jockey Rodney Bingenheimer and TV host Barbara Walters have something in common.
They will join 20 other celebrities from radio, recording, theater, television and film to be honored in 2007 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Recipients were announced Friday by Walk of Fame committee chairman Johnny Grant.

"It's a privilege to honor these performers," he said.

In a marathon meeting held June 16, the committee reviewed more than 200 nominations to select the 23 honorees.

The complete list of 2007 Walk of Fame recipients, as ratified by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce board of directors:

— Motion pictures: Michael Caine, Matt Damon, Lauren Shuler Donner, Jamie Foxx, John Goodman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Altman.

— Television: Walters, Erik Estrada, Kiefer Sutherland, Jerry Stiller, Dick Wolff.

History


The Walk of Fame is a chronological history of the Hollywood-based entertainment industry and honors those who have made significant contributions in the categories of radio, television, motion pictures, recording and live performance.

The official nomination period is announced in the Hollywood Entertainment Trade publications and an appropriate news release is disseminated to the Los Angeles area print and broadcast media.

The Walk of Fame Committee meets annually. Nomination of an individual or group does not automatically equate to approval of a star in the Walk of Fame. Several hundred applications are reviewed annually, from which an undetermined number is selected. All nominated artists are carefully and objectively evaluated. Those not selected the first year will automatically roll over for a second review the following year. If it is not approved in the second year, nominees must be resubmitted

When nominating an individual or group, the sponsor must submit the nominee’s qualifications as well as contributions to the community and/or civic-oriented activities. The application must be accompanied by a biography (not exceeding two pages) and photograph of the nominee. Non-returnable samples of the nominee’s work may also be submitted (i.e. in the recording category -- a music CD; Motion Picture – a DVD). After the Walk of Fame Committee has made its selections, the artist must be approved by the following agencies: the Board of Directors of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles City Board of Public Works, with the final approbation being the Los Angeles City Council.

Criteria for Star on the Walk of Fame
1. Professional achievement
2. Longevity of five years in the field of entertainment
3. Contributions to the community

The recipient must agree to attend the dedication ceremony.

In case of a fan nomination, a letter of agreement must be sent by celebrity management.

There is a five-year waiting period after death for nominations of deceased individuals. The Committee does not necessarily select posthumous honorees each year.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce makes every effort to schedule a dedication ceremony on the date requested by the honoree. A 60-day lead period is needed for required permits, the manufacturing of the star, and advance publicity.

Please be advised that if your nominee is selected and the induction does not take place within five years of the selection date, the nominee must be re-submitted during another voting period.

The sponsorship fee is $15,000*.
The Committee does not accept signature petitions, postcards or letters.
Deadline for nominations is May 31, 2006**.

It's about freakin' time! There's stars on that Walk of Fame for people who I haven't even heard of, so for a star of Shania's magnitude, this is waaaay overdue. You know what would be ven cooler though? Having her handprints in the pavement out the front of Manns Chinese Theatre alongside the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Arnold Schwarzenegger, although I think that's only for actors. :scowl:

Ricky Martin was “livin la vida loca“ on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, surrounded by hundreds of shrieking female fans as he saw himself immortalised in concrete with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“My work has been recognised. It will stay here forever, hopefully,” Martin told The Associated Press after the ceremony. “I’m so motivated right now, we’ll see where this takes me.”

Hundreds of fans waving Puerto Rican flags and screaming “Ricky!” flocked to the ceremony for Puerto Rico’s native son, who got his start in the 1980s with the Hispanic boy band Menudo.

Since then his swivelling hips and chart-topping hits have made him a pop music juggernaut throughout the world, and fans could not stop screaming his name as his star was unveiled.

“This is an incredible moment,” Martin, wearing a striped shirt and dark suit and tie, told the crowd. “Everything I do, I do with love and passion.”

Those at the ceremony included Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and actress Rita Moreno, who praised Martin for his altruistic works.

“To speak of his talent, his accolades, his awards is redundant,” Moreno said. “He has devoted part of his life, his talent, his resources, to helping needy children around the world.”

Martin, 35, started the Ricky Martin Foundation to help children in need seven years ago and has spoken out against human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The Grammy-winning singer is one of Puerto Rico’s top-selling artists, with hits like She Bangs and Livin’ La Vida Loca, the latter a No 1 hit around the world.

Known for his charisma on stage, Martin has sold more than 60 million albums as a solo artist.

Martin was nominated this year for four Latin Grammy awards, including best album, best male pop vocal and best long video for his MTV Unplugged album and record of the year for Tu Recuerdo (Your Memory).

He won a Grammy award in 1998 for best Latin pop performance.

More than 65 Hispanic celebrities, including Pedro Infante, Cantinflas and fellow singer Julio Iglesias, have stars on the Walk of Fame.

Martin’s star, the 2,351st awarded, was placed outside the Virgin Megastore at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

I'd say that's likely. Espeically because she hasn't released something in a while there might be some (ignorant) people who are just like "what the heck"? I think that would be the smart way to do it anyway, that way she doesn't have to do too much travelling either.

I know she did get one in Holland and Germany aswell. Just the one she got in Canada came to my mind first and I'm more familar with it. I member seeing her on the Walk Of Fame commercial and I got so excited. :D
