As you can see, a live-action Transformers movie will be released on the 4th of July, 2007! :D I'm quite excited for this.. as a kid, I watched the cartoons and I was just addicted!

Anyway, these are the known actors [so far] which will star in the movie: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Jon Voight, Bernie Mac, Tyrese Gibson, Rachael Taylor, Amaury Nolasco, Kevin Dunn and Ronnie Sperling.
The film is directed by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg is executive producer.

As of today, you can now watch the Announcement Teaser on the site (click the teaser poster above)!

That trailor looks pretty good. I used to watch it when I was a kid, I had a lot of the toys too.

Do you know anything about the plot? I've read a few things and it sounds awful :(

Don't quote me, this is just what I've read on movie sites...

It involves a guy called Daniel trying to impress a girl he likes with a new car (an autobot in training) and he goes drag racing and the car saves him from crashing. And apparently the robots in the film can change colour whenever they want, so they can disguise themselves.

Actually, nothing is known about the plot [yet]. Michael Bay is trying to keep everything a big secret until the very end.. So everything you may hear or read is just pure speculation..

Also note that the announcement trailer doesn't have to do anything with the actual plot of the film..:)

With all the rumours of the story line and now this... I'm not holding out much hope. I think a big factor with making this film is the marketing. They're going to make millions out of toys, posters and other stuff, it doesn't really matter what quality the film is.

Well the response of the fan community has been enormous (mostly negative).. here's what Hasbro's COO, Brian Goldner had to say:

"Good Afternoon--Let me answer your questions. Starscream is simply the coolest, most aggressive military jet in the skies. The military has given us unprecedented access to deliver this character to the audience in the most compelling way. He is Very much like G1. As noted to Nelson earlier in the week, the details, deco, weapons, and sculpt itself will change as we move from grey model to final form. Megatron is an early style board. Without revealing too much of the story, there is a very important reason for his look to have evolved from pure G1; although the final look is a work-in-progress--ILM has just recently begun all their CGI development. Megatron has a iconic personality, and approach that dates back to G1. Throughout time he has had a very big gun.... "

And here's another one..

"How do I say this--You guys say you want to see robots NOW, and then, when you see early work-in-progress, you flip out!!!

Let me try to frame where we are headed with TRANSFORMERS, and draw some analogies...you loved G1 the first time you saw it ( and every time since), and so did we...It told a NEW story of sentient beings that have human-like characters, and yet, there is so much more to them than what's on the surface...they transform from recognizable objects to unimaginable robots. They have their own history, and rivalries that we witness, and get swept up in... We all owe it to the next generations of folks to use the technology, storytelling, and access (to real contemporary vehicles/military) that TRANSFORMERS provides to drive this forward...your input in very important as it helps to shape the delivery of TRANFORMERS as a LIVE-ACTION movie. We will show you robots, when they are right....they will be PHOTO-REALISTIC. In fact, this movie could have never been produced much before today....this is worth the effort.

We need to tell an origin story because not everyone is as versed as you in the history....we need to explain elements of the TRANSFORMERS that can be glossed over in animation...there are logic gaps that do need to make sense when a broad global audience buys a ticket and wants to enjoy the show as much as you will...we continue to make progress.

Starcream is a complex character. He is loyal, and yet ready to mutiny all at the same time. He is two-faced and duplicitious...his character will be played out in his design...as he evolves he is looking very cool....

Megatron too is a very important link from past (G1) to present...there are major story elements that will come to light as you watch the film that make his evolving design ring true...of course, he has always had big guns...just wait to see what we have done here....again, LIVE-ACTION....

The comments and jokes about leaving the boards are unjustified...there has never been a group of producers, writiers, and studio executives more engaged in this project, and for that reason not always attached to these boards.

thanks...bg"

Definately
That..'thing' doesn't even look like Megs, it's so alien.. But, it's rumoured the robots have 2 robotic forms, one Alien like and one..well, another one..:p
Also, they're stil in doubt whether to let them speak English or Cybertronian (or only Megatron)..

It's still an early design of him/them, and he speaks about Meg's cannon, so there's still hope.. :uhh:

matty
08-26-2006, 5:25pm
Why do they need to two forms? I don't understand why they have to make the movie this way. All they need to do is come up with a decent storyline and make the cars and trucks come to life. The idea of Transformers isn't hard to understand, so why over complicate it. I can see the result of this being like Alien VS Predator, which was so bad I can't find the words to describe it.

captainCorr
08-26-2006, 5:36pm
Well apparently they really want to spring it to live, really make it 'live-action' and really want to be it as photo-realistic as possible (and have it the same scale, parts, etc. as the vehicles)..And of course like a lot of movie adaptions, it will be based (and use chunks of) on the cartoon..
(so that means even the story (on how they got to Earth etc.) could be different)

Well, we'll see.. we're still a year away from the release, so a lot of things can change until then..:smirk:

...I still don't see why they have make them look like those designs. The Transfomers used to fly anyway, if I remember correctly, so that's how they can get on earth. I just have a bad feeling they're going to spend to much time on lesser important things than on telling a good story.

Anyway like you say it's a year off so at lot could change, but it would be shame to ruin a great franchise.

Yes, the Autobots in the Ark and the Decepticons in the Nemesis (in pre-Historic Earth, 4 million years ago).. The Ark crashed into a dormant vulcano and the Nemesis in a remote region of South-America. And I do remember that in the very first episode they try to take off and end up crashing into the sea..

Oh, about their forms. I forgot that also in the Cartoons they had different forms. When they were on Cybertron, they had different vehicle modes (so naturally the robots looked different too). And when they were on Earth, both the Autobots' and the Decepticons' computers modified them so as to give them alternate modes that could blend in on Earth.

captainCorr

Oh, here's more info on the plot (or as it stands at the moment)..

Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci said that the storyline will not be based upon the original Generation 1 series, but will feature many of the original characters. Ain't It Cool News reported a scene where a giant robotic scorpion Decepticon named Scorponok attacks a Middle Eastern Army base. There is also a supposed car chase scene between Optimus Prime and an unnamed Decepticon truck. Michael Bay has confirmed that the movie starts out with a battle on Cybertron. It then moves to the Arctic Circle where a man accidentaly chips away a massive sheet of ice, then falls into the abyss. He then falls on a robotic hand that is half in- half out of ice. The man looks up and a face, appearing to be fixed into a scream, is seen in the ice. The man looks on the shoulder, on which the Decepticon emblem is seen. The story also shows how Spike Witwicky gets his first car, which turns out to be the Autobot Bumblebee.

captainCorr

and the Nemesis in a remote region of South-America. And I do remember that in the very first episode they try to take off and end up crashing into the sea..

Oh wait a minute, the 'Nemesis' subject is a bit complicated.. It first crashed into the Pacific Ocean, then in Beast Wars, it ultimately crashed in South-America. And then in the first episode of the original Transformers (G1), it crashed yet again into the sea/ocean.. :uhh:

Ok, here's a review of an early draft of the movie!

* * SPOILERS * 5

So what is the story about?

I guessed it pretty much way before I ever got the script. It is quite simple actually. What was the original Television series about? What were both the Decpticons and Autobots after that was depleted on their home planet of Cybertron?

The Energon Cube. A supreme power that imbues the Transformers with the gift of “spark” – the life force within all the Transformers.

So in a nutshell, Optimus Prime and the Autobots have to find the Energon Cube on Earth before Megatron and the Decepticons do. That is what the Transformer Movie coming next year in 2007 is simply all about. The Autobots and the Decepticons each have their reasons for finding the Energon cube, but I won’t spoil it here. Just know that is what the script is about.

[....]

Ok, so what is the verdict? Is it whack? Is it good?

As a diehard transformers fan, I reads this script objectively TWICE. Last night and today.

THE SCRIPT ROCKS! Utter adulation! The story is dope!

[....]

I read half of the very first draft of John Rodgers delivered in Jan 2005, I couldn’t finish the other half, my source had to give the script back and hence why I couldn’t do a script review on it like I wanted last year. I knew that I would get the script again eventually. The script and its development have progressed quite nicely. This current draft is up to snuff; it’s organic, nothing coincidental, the structure sound, and the action PLENTY! Especially the robot on robot action and the military on robot action. My goodness I can’t wait to see this translated to the screen. What Quint of AICN saw in the animatics is all here on the page. This draft is a lean 111 pages. Another thing about the script is how unexpectedly funny and witty it is! This thing is gonna get the right laughs in the right places. Certain parts of it had me rolling.

So out of respect to the filmmaking team on Transformers, I’m only going take a quick peek at the 1st 10 pages and keep the spoilers as lite as possible. I will just paint the broadstrokes.

The script opens 1 million years before the dawn of man with the energon cube hurtling through space on it’s path towards Earth. A narrator tells us that the ravages of war destroyed Cybertron, a war raged between the legions who worship chaos and those who follow freedom. They battled for a supreme power, the Energon Cube. It’s origin unknown yet it bears the life-force that created the transformer race. They fought until their world was awash in death until the very ground swallowed whole their once mighty cities and the cube was lost to the limitless stars. Then by fortune or fate, its course was altered, drawn to a planet called Earth. They have searched for the cube across desserts of time, hoping to find it before the dark legions, but as fate would have it, they were already too late.

We are then in the artic circle in 1897 on a national Antarctic expedition and focus on a derelict sailing vessel trapped in ice. The crew works desperately to free the ship. The dogs bark, there is something in the ice. The captain, two men and the dogs go out over the artic shelf and look at whatever is buried under the ice. A huge rift opens, one of the dogs and the captain falls into a 30ft fissure. We pull back and see the captain standing on the palm of a giant steel hand, half in and half out of the ice. A mechanized face is embedded within the ice wall, expression frozen in a scream. The Captain wipes away ice to reveal symbol on the mechanoid – the Decepticon emblem. The captain takes a pick axe and stars chopping away at the ice to take a better look, activates something on the robot’s chasis and something happens.

Next we are in present day Qatar, the Middle East as two air force cv-22 ospreys skim the dunes. Piloting the two planes, we meet SERGEANT WILLIAM LENNOX US AIR FORCE COMBAT CONTROLLER, and ARMY CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER JORGE FIGUEROA “FIG”, Dominican by way of the Louisiana Bayou who sings along to Reggaeton on the stereo. Holy cow! A Dominican like myself as one of the good guys! This is the Amaury Nolasco character and not the Michael Clarke Duncan character. My only gripe is that Dominicans don’t hail from the bayou. I have neither Dominican friends nor relatives and they have no Dominican friends or relatives who hail from the bayou. Any of you out there? Let me know. I am certainly a displaced Dominican here in Los Angeles so it would be a first if there were other displaced Dominicans in the bayou. Fig, like any food loving Latino, talks about pasteles and spiced adobo pork in this scene with Lennox and it makes me wonder if the writer Roberto Orci is Latino. But props to the writers for making the Latino character a heroic character.

Anyways, Lennox and Fig arrive back at Soccent Operations Center and we meet the rest of the Army team there on the tarmac – SARGEANT FIRST CLASS DONNELLY (Irish-American), and STAFF SARGEANT EPPS (the Tyrese Gibson character). We also meet an Arab boy MAHFOUZ.

Inside the operations center, a bogey appears on radar. Two f-22’s go and intercept the bogey. The bogey, a massive MH-53 helicopter appears over the dunes. The f-22 gives the bogey a warning and then escorts it back to base. There seems to be a mistake because that chopper was shot down 3 months ago. Something is not right with the Soccent Watch Commander. There has got to be a mistake. At the loading bay, the bogey lets out a loud shriek, disables all the radar and computers, transforms into the Decepticon VORTEX and attacks the base! It vaporizes a row of c-17 cargo planes! All the planes hangars are destroyed in the blast! Vortex rips the roof off of the JOC JOINT OPERATIONS CENTER and attempts to hack into the cray computers and tries to download a file:

PROJECT: ICE MAN: ABOVE TOP SECRET: SECTION SEVEN ACCESS ONLY. We see the alien transformer code. A techie takes an axe and cuts the hard line; the cable explodes, cutting off Vortex’s connection. Pissed off Vortex obliterates everyone. The op-center explodes in a thousand directions. Vortex stomps down and crushes a vehicle King Kong style! Complete chaos at the base. Skorponok disengages from Vortex’s back and goes on the hunt for Lennox, Epps, Fig, Donnelly and the other soldiers!

And that is just the 1st 10 pages folks! Action packed! The rest of the script is just as tight. The 3rd act is wall to wall action! A Transformer fan’s dream!

Some other 1st act story details:

- After the blockbuster opening we meet SAM WITWICKY at Tranquility high school, the unfortunate yet adorable dork that he is, his love interest MIKALELA BARNES, her ******* boyfriend TRENT DEMARCO. We also meet Sam’s Chihuahua MOJO.

- Sam’s father RON picks him up after school and they meet up with a shady car dealer BOBBY BOLIVIA. Since Ron got 3 A’s, his dad got four grand to buy Sam a car. Sam ends up buying a 75 Camaro, which we by now all know is BUMBLEBEE. The Autobot emblem is on the steering wheel.

- Later we meet MAGGIE MARCONI, 28 and GLEN WHITTMAN (Michael Clarke Duncan) who work at a Washington think tank the Rand Corporation. Glen’s character is funny as **** in this.

- Maggie gets taken to the Pentagon by agents and gets recruited by JOHN KELLER, the secretary of defense (John Voight), since she is a signal analyst to make sense of the signal and shriek that hit Qatar.

- And in a super cool sequence towards the end of Act 1, SOUNDWAVE is aboard AIR FORCE ONE! A Decepticon aboard the same plane as the President!

For now that is all I’m gonna say. The script is definitely MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE.

We also get to see the Transformers in their mechanoid states and see how they select their disguises or the vehicles they transform in and out. Like Bay said, we see how the military responds to a situation like Transformers. The chase sequence is off the chain. The battles are super cool, and there are some funny *** moments in this, like I said an A+…

Thanks for that link. I was 10 when they came out. My first one was Megatron, and I didn't know what they were. I traded with a friend for a gun that shot little pellets. I totally thought a gun that turned into a robot was like, the coolest thing ever. My second one was Soundwave, and I had all the little tapes that went into his chest. He didn't last that long cause he got busted. I traded with two other freinds for a week. That was funny cause non of us wanted to trade back. Not cause we thought they were cool, but we all busted the ones we traded for. All of us were scared to trade back cause we didn't want to get in trouble for breaking them. That was funny we all scared the friend we traded with was gonna be mad, but they were all broken.

Btw, you/I might've already said this, but I forgot :p, have you read the synopsis for the very beginning of the film (Megatron - Antartica)? That's one reason for his (Megs) look; also that it's his Cybertronian mode and apparently..he has no desire to have an Earth Alt. mode..:uhh:

The thing with Prime's head/face is..it's too long..or it appears to be long. That "chinstrap" makes it longer..together with the top ridge of his faceplate (which points down, instead of up)..

The AICN interview with Shia LaBeouf (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=24383) is now online!

Some interesting extracts (spoilers!)..

SHIA LABEOUF: [....] There's a lot of stuff... you know, there's new robots that he'll create. Or he'll take something like Soundwave and turn it into Soundbyte and it'll become something else. That's understandable, but in no way is he tainting this at all. If anything he's turning it up and modernizing it. There are certain things, like Megatron wasn't a jet, you know?

QUINT: I'm curious how that's going to translate. I don't mind that he's a jet so much because even as a kid I thought it was a bit weird that the king of all badass villain robots could turn into a gun that somebody else had to use. It kind of took some of his power away...

SHIA LABEOUF: Right, right. That's sort of what Soundwave was about. Those characters all had meaning because Megatron needed that crutch. Now that that's gone, it's done in other ways. Megatron's crutch now is that he's frozen. But it's modernized. You can't have a toy gun. You've got 9 year olds watching this movie and yes, we're creating mythology, but you can't make a toy gun your antihero and then have Hasbro go out and sell toy guns with the little yellow cap on it, you know? It'll look ****in' ridiculous to have Megatron with a yellow nose, you know what I mean? It'd look retarded.
The fact that it's a Razor, a plane that nobody's seen before, that the military is giving us... that nobody has filmed or seen. I mean, CNN has not seen this plane and we're filming it. It's cool. It gives it that edgy ****. People have seen guns before, but to make Megatron something that nobody's ever seen and make it an edgy presence... it does, it modernizes it and makes it dangerous again. Guns aren't dangerous. How crazy is that to say? But guns aren't dangerous! You've got guns in movies that aren't dangerous at all, you know? I feel like HERBIE THE LOVE BUG could have had a gun and nobody would have questioned it, you know?

QUINT: Maybe stashed in the glove compartment...

SHIA LABEOUF: (laughs) Exactly, it could have been in the glove compartment! But a Razor, you know, with nuclear weapons... Nuclear weapons is what's dangerous. In the '80s it was the gun, but we've been (desensitized), so you've got to amp it up a little bit. And Michael Bay is the dude to amp everything up!

QUINT: You know... I sat down with Bay before shooting and he told me that the whole hook for him with this project wasn't the robots or the action. He said it was the human story, specifically your story, what he called the All-American story of a kid getting his first car.

SHIA LABEOUF: When I met with him he said the same thing. That's why I was into it. I mean, yes it was TRANSFORMERS and oh ****! You're taking me to meet with Michael Bay, but then he was like, "It's a coming of age story." I would never fathom him saying those words. From what I know of Michael Bay and his career and his philosophies on filmmaking, I would have never imagined that. It's something new for him, as it is for me. I mean, he walked onto a set with a 19 year old, 20 year old actor... We'd never met each other before and we've done minimal rehearsals and then we're on set and he's granting me power to have creative control. It's rewarding, it's very fulfilling to know that a person of that stature...

QUINT: Tell me a little bit more about the character you play.

SHIA LABEOUF: Sam is... (pauses). The engine of Sam, for the film, essentially he is the liaison between the robots and the humans. The government is too closed minded to conceive of a reality like this, of alien machines... it's just too much. So, they bestow power upon these people who are experts at their crafts, whether it be the technician or the Dogs of War, or the braintrust who is able to communicate with the robots.
And the reason Sam is able to communicate with the robots... It's not because he knows some ****in' alien language. Sam Whitwicky comes from a lineage of explorers. Captain Archibald Whitwicky was his great, great grandfather, a 19th Century Seaman, who, during a search, an exploration of the arctic circle, fell upon an ice cave. Fell into the ice cave and into a hand; the hand of Megatron. What he saw when he turned was an eye which burned a laser into his eyeglasses, which was a map of where the Energon Cube is being stored.
When Optimus and the Autobots come to Earth, they're looking for the same thing the Decepticons, obviously. The way that they get there is the map on the glasses. Who has the glasses? Sam has the glasses. So, he becomes the liaison between them and their goal. I'm the middle man.

QUINT: There's also an element of protection, as well. They protect you from the Decepticons.

SHIA LABEOUF: Yeah. Bumblebee becomes my guardian because now that I am the liaison there's power. It's like knowing where the next oil well is, for Americans. Now you have this power, everyone's going to come after you. The Energon Cube is that. Every time I think of this Energon Cube... I know of the Transformers, but when I'm explaining to my mother, that's how I always explain it. It's like oil for America. That's what it is. And there's a lot of political **** in this. If you're watching and if you have the imagination, can become a kid again, you'll understand.
Mike is very political, but he's also very flag-waving American. That's why we are able to have army here. There's army guys here all the time.
QUINT: Who is Turturro playing?

SHIA LABEOUF: Turturro plays Simmons, who is the CIA agent who is so closed minded that he can't listen to a child. He's the head of a section of the government called Sector 7, which controls everything the CIA doesn't know about.

Today is the last day of main unit shooting. In two hours we'll break for lunch. Then blow up more **** in downtown LA.

Next week a reduced unit with very few actors will head to different cities and pick up some establishing shots. Then some of the team will head to the Frozen North.

The film is basically done today boys and girls. And by done I mean filming. If ever there was a film that was really going to be made in post production, this is it. Much editing and many effects to go.

How do I feel? There is a promo reel that has been put together for exhibitors and retailers that is mind boggling. There is a trailer being put together for later this year that should blow your mind.

I'm feeling pretty good that we've made a film that you will like. Only time will tell.

I had a water pipe break in the downstairs of our house yesterday. A neighbor called to say the firemen were breaking in. We imagined a lot of damage and, oddly, found very little. Fortunate.

May your Sunday be fortunate Stooges. Hang tight!

Hasbro banking on ‘Transformers’ hitting it big
Film based on hit toys, ‘sort of opens another chapter for us,’ executive says

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Hasbro Inc. struggled when the toy company tied its fortunes too closely to toys based on movies.

But a movie based on its toys? That could be a different story.

Hasbro is banking that the July 4 release of the DreamWorks/Paramount movie “Transformers” — based on Hasbro’s “robots in disguise” toys introduced in the 1980s — will herald a new era for the company that in the past few years has been remaking itself from a toy maker to an entertainment company.

“’Transformers’ sort of opens another chapter for us,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chief operating officer, who is listed as an executive producer on the movie. “In the past, I think that the company may have thought too narrowly about its brands as forms of entertainment.”

In 2000, the Pawtucket, R.I.-based company was struggling. The toy maker lost $144 million after fads for Pokemon trading cards and the electronic pet Furby faltered. It cut hundreds of jobs. Then-chief executive Alan Hassenfeld called it “a very painful year.”

Part of the problem was an over-reliance on movie-related toys, like tie-ins to the “Star Wars” franchise, said Sean McGowan, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities.

“They would be hot for a while, then not hot,” McGowan said.

So Hasbro’s executives went back to basics. They turned their focus to time-tested “core brands,” names consumers knew and trusted: Playskool, Monopoly, My Little Pony, Transformers and others. They looked at the brand’s core idea and thought of ways to contemporize it and parlay it into new products that would turn the company around and keep it growing.

Since then, they’ve developed new versions of Monopoly, released a line of Playskool products for CVS drugstores, including diapers and baby bottles, created a “My Little Pony” live stage show — based on the toy — to name a few.

While Hasbro still does its share of movie tie-ins — “Spider-Man 3” and “Star Wars,” for example — it still has a treasure trove of stable properties, McGowan said.

Another upside for Hasbro is that it owns the Transformer brand, so on most Transformers-related products it doesn’t have to pay royalties and can license the name. Hasbro signed up 230 licensees for “Transformers” the movie, items such as video games and cell phone games, Goldner said.

“The last couple years have been the best years they’ve had in a very long time,” said Jim Silver, editor-in-chief of Toy Wishes Magazine.

Hasbro started the year strong, reporting a profit of $32.9 million for the three months that ended April 1, versus a loss of $4.9 million in the year-ago period. The company credited core brands and strong sales of games, led by Monopoly. Shares surged to an eight-year high, but some analysts have since downgraded their projections, warning that the stock price already factors in the high expectations for “Transformers” and that sales could slow down next year.

The idea for the “Transformers” movie started percolating in 2002, when Goldner and his team began re-examining Hasbro’s properties for boys. At around the same time, “Spider-Man” was making its debut as a live-action, blockbuster movie and Goldner realized Transformers could do the same.

“I looked at Transformers and G.I. Joe as opportunities to enter that same arena,” he said. “Three-quarters of now-adult men had played with these products as children.”

Hasbro licensed the Transformers to Dreamworks and did not produce the film, but Goldner is listed as a co-executive producer. In contrast, Marvel Studios, a division of Marvel Entertainment, was involved in producing the Spider-Man movies based on Marvel characters.

“Transformers” is not the first movie to be based on a toy or game. The 1985 movie “Clue” took themes and characters from the popular Hasbro board game. Indeed, there was an animated Transformers movie in the 1980s (when the “Transformers” animated TV show and comic books were wildly popular).

But in recent years, toy companies have ramped it up. Marvel has had great success of late with movies based on its comic book characters: “Spider-Man,” “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” the 20th Century Fox film, which debuted as the No. 1 weekend flick last week with $57.4 million in sales, slightly surpassing the $56.1 million opening of “Fantastic Four” two years ago.

Mattel also has released a series of successful direct-to-DVD movies based on Barbie, Silver said. Later this summer, Lions Gate Films plans to release “Bratz,” a live-action movie based on the MGA Entertainment dolls popular with tween girls.

“At the end of the day, Hasbro and some of the other large toy companies realize they’re in the entertainment business,” Silver said. He describes Hasbro today as “a family entertainment company.”

The movie is one of the most anticipated of the summer. It won an MTV Movie Award this month for the best “Summer movie you haven’t seen,” and is opening on what has traditionally been one of the biggest moviegoing holidays of the year.

“They put their stake down and everybody avoided it,” Silver said. “That is the biggest statement of how Hollywood expects the movie to be.”

Goldner said Hasbro is now working on a movie based on G.I. Joe, and he won’t rule out other Hasbro-related movies down the line.

“You could imagine what a Monopoly movie would be like,” Goldner said. “It’s not a film of a board game. It can be the whole experience people have, and all the iconography of Monopoly.”

Independent toy analyst Chris Byrne said the idea could work.

“Monopoly makes a lot more sense than some of the movies we’ve seen,” he said.

Goldner said he doesn’t want to stop at Transformers or movies.

“Our brands have great salience among so many audiences and have been enjoyed by so many generations,” he said. “There’s a bigger story to be told, and that can be done through numerous forms of entertainment.”

Transformers’ morphs into money machine
If weekend figures hold, film could surpass 2002's ‘Spider-Man’

LOS ANGELES - The shape-shifting robots of “Transformers” have taken on a new form: Huge piles of cash.

The sci-fi saga “Transformers,” DreamWorks and Paramount’s big-screen take on the Hasbro toys, debuted with $67.6 million in ticket sales in its first weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. That gave it $152.5 million since opening with preview screenings Monday night.

If the weekend figures hold when final numbers are released Monday, that would give “Transformers” the biggest first week revenues ever for a non-sequel, surpassing the $151.6 million of 2002’s “Spider-Man.” But factoring in today’s higher ticket prices, “Spider-Man” drew more people in its first week, about 26.1 million, compared to 22.5 million for “Transformers.”

“Transformers,” was directed by Michael Bay and features a cast led by Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, who are among the humans hurled into the action when two races of warring robots bring their feud to Earth.

The movie’s striking visual effects and the Transformers brand — which debuted in the 1980s with toys, a TV show and an animated movie — proved irresistible for audiences, said Rob Moore, Paramount’s head of worldwide marketing and distribution.

“Michael Bay created something visually that people hadn’t seen before,” Moore said. “When you look at a jet plane flying under a bridge then flipping and turning into a robot, those kinds of images people found incredibly unique and compelling.”

Transformers” also took in $93.6 million in 23 other countries where it has opened since June 28.

However, the overall domestic box office plunged. The top 12 movies took in $161.5 million, down 23 percent from the same weekend last year, when “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” opened with what was then a record weekend of $135.6 million.

“The good news is we’ve got another big one right around the corner with ’Harry Potter,”’ said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. “We should be looking at a strong midsummer boost that’ll hopefully carry through to the end of summer.”

The weekend’s other new wide release, the Warner Bros. comedy “License to Wed,” took fourth place with $10.4 million, raising its total since debuting Tuesday to $17.8 million. It stars Robin Williams as a minister who forces an engaged couple (Mandy Moore and John Krasinski) through a tortuous marital boot camp.
The previous weekend’s No. 1 flick, Disney’s animated “Ratatouille,” dropped to second place with $29 million, raising its 10-day total to $109.5 million. “Ratatouille” held up well in its second weekend as revenues fell just 38 percent, compared to drops of 50 percent or more for many other big summer movies.

Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” took in $3 million to climb to $301.7 million domestically, following Sony’s “Spider-Man 3” and DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek the Third” as $300 million hits this year.

In limited release, MGM’s “Rescue Dawn” debuted strongly with $104,000 in six theaters. It stars Christian Bale in the real-life story of a U.S. pilot struggling to survive after he’s shot down over Laos during the Vietnam War.

Great you loved it! Yeah and I love the "hints"/trivial stuff put in the movie....like when Spike said "more than meets the eye" :funny:

Liked the Epilogue and I saw the 2 clips during the end credits.. but I missed the last one (with SS). The images of Cybertron were..not as I had imagined, but they looked cool nonetheless!

Really can't wait for the sequel!

Absolutely.

Also I know a few people who went to see it expecting to hate it, but loved it. I think most people will like it simply because it is so well made.

I bought the DVD yesterday and it was better than I thought. I totally agree with you Paul I thought it would suck goats aswell. I got the version with the collector tin, the one with the Autobot logo on the front. I'm glad they didn't use a diffrent voice for Prime, I really don't think anyone else could have done it. I was surprised at the humour in the movie, it made the movie that much better. :D

I think Megan Fox is the perfect person to play Wonder Woman in the movie version, she's kinda got a Lynda Carter look about her.

My first one was Megatron and I didn't know what they were when I got him. I traded with a buddy for a gun that shot little plastic pellets. When he showed me the gun that transformed into a robot I thought it was the coolest thing ever. One Christmas I got Soundwave and some of the little tapes and I was hooked after that. Every dime I got after that was pretty much put into Transformers its also the only thing I asked for Chritmas or birthdays.

With Megatron now dead I wonder who'll they'll use for the bad guy in the next one. I wonder if they'll bring him back as Galvitron or wait until a later movie? Since Star Scream got away he could be the guy for the second one and then Galvitron could come back in the third one and kill Star Scream.

There were somethings I was disapointed in like the voice of Star Scream, its didn't sound like Star Screamish to me. I think if they didn't want to have Megatron as a gun aleast they should made him a tank, anything to keep that huge arm mounted cannon on his arm.

But his arm transforms into a big gun and even better his two arms combine to make a super gun as seen in the movie.
The tank Devastator was awesome he was the best one I think, a tough decepticon who would beat most if not all the autobots one against one:D
