Radio & Records Nashville Bureau Chief and Country Editor Lon Helton has resigned after 23 years with the Los Angeles-based trade. Helton has confirmed he will launch his own publication. The name and start date have yet to be determined.

"R&R Publisher Erica Farber, like Bob Wilson before her, has been nothing but supportive of me and the country format," Helton told Music Row. "But with everything going on in the marketplace, the timing is right for me to step out on my own to continue super-serving the country community."

An announcement is expected tomorrow regarding the new publication's agreement to manage and carry Mediabase's country charts. This move puts Helton back at the helm of the country singles chart he developed during his tenure at R&R. Concurrently, R&R Associate Country Editor Chuck Aly has also resigned and will be joining Helton in the new endeavor. This change happens in the wake of R&R’s acquisition by Billboard and the decision to merge R&R and the Billboard Monitor into one publication. Before the acquisition, R&R used data from Mediabase to tabulate its charts, but after the acquisition, Billboard chose to use chart data from its BDS system.

Helton hosts the syndicated Country Countdown USA radio show and has been inducted into the Disc Jockey Hall of Fame. He also serves on Board of Directors of the CMA and Country Music Foundation.
