The thing here is that everywhere I look, only LCD's and plasmas, I don't even know if they sell normal tvs anymore :uhh:
They do sell "normal" tv still over here, not many but they do and you can find quite good ones too that cost around 1500 Euro just two-three years ago, but now they sell them for around 500 Euro.
I´m talking about 32" 100Hz widescreen, you can find 50Hz even cheaper of course.
I was forced to buy a new tv last week since even the one I had borrowed broke down.
I hadn´t any plan to buy a new tv in at least a couple of years since I feel that the new HD technology isn´t quite ready yet and I didn´t want to spend a lot of money on something that wasn´t fully developed yet, but now I was forced to since my old one broke down and even the one I had borrowed by a friend broke down.
Last Sunday I ended up buying a cheap but still good (read a lot of reviews) HD-ready 32" LCD that had all the right "stuff" in it, works fine so far. :p

Ah good, you have done all the research already :D
What model did you end up buying? I'll see if they have that here too, and look at prices, and then at some point decide which one to go with, a cheap normal tv or an LCD one.
A DiBoss LT-32S5LFH, not to be misstaken for LT-32HLP which is the old model, still a good model but the new one is better and have HDMI instead of DVI (HDCP)
http://www.diboss.fi/
Interesting is that I bought it last Sunday and now that store doesn´t have it anymore
Those big stores usually do that, they buy a bunch of those tv´s and then they sell them untill they are all sold, then they choose another modell instead.
The tv is not the best looking maybe, but I watch the screen and not the whole tv ;)

Oh no, I haven't seen that model mentioned anywhere. I need to do research also  This was supposed to be easy since you did all the work already. *sigh* :p
Ok, let's try this another way around: if I were to choose a normal tv, what qualities should it have, 100Hz, what else? I need one with 2 scart connections, are there models with more than 2?
When I buy digibox, what will be the setup? Scart from tv to digibox and from there to vcr and dvd? Or one direct from tv to dvd? :uhh:
What qualities should an LCD one have?

How does this sound?
DiBOSS LT-26H5LFH 26" LCD-TV, 1280x768 (WXGA).
HD-ready. HDMI, VGA ja two scart connections. Brightness 500cd/m2. Contrast 1000:1. 8ms

I don´t know about Finnish ones, but in Swedish you can find several forums and homepages that discuss and makes reviews about different models.
Remember that often it is useless to watch reviews from US or even other European countries when it comes to tv´s since the models are often different or at least have different names.
Almost all normal tv´s have (at least) 2 scarts, you could find really wierd models with only one.
100Hz is good, but not a must, it´s more important to find good reviews from private persons since thats the best proof that the tv works fine.
You can set up the scarts either way you mentioned, both works.
A LCD should have resolution of at least 1366x768, HDMI or at least DVI (HDCP) input and manage to show HDTV formats 720p or 1080i, a response time of 8ms or less. (important when watching analog tv on a LCD)
But the same again, the reviews from normal private persons are the most important since they have no need to lie about the tv compared to the guy in the tv store who is trying to sell a crap tv. :p
The HDTV stuff is still in the future for us over here, especially untill everything will be broadcast in HD format, but if the tv will last for many years it´s not a bad thing if it can handle the signals already now.

Very small! A 26" widscreen is even smaller than the one (21") you have now since only half or less of the tv shows are broadcast in widescreen 16:9 and by that you will have "black lines" on the sides when watching normal 4:3 and the screen becomes very small.
Oh, how to explain that... well both of them works and are compatible if they support HDCP

Yeah I know, but at least a 28" would be better.
Sure you can watch normal 4:3 shows in 16:9, but I personally hate that! But you could also zoom and skip a bit of the picture on top and below, I actually watch that way just now. :p
I found this in English somewhere on the net, I think it explains it quite well after a quick look.
HDCP - HIGH-BANDWIDTH DIGITAL CONTENT PROTECTION
HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection and was developed by Intel Corporation.
Politics aside, HDCP is a technology embraced by the Motion Picture Association of America as it eliminates the reproduction of copyrighted material.
DVI - DIGITAL VISUAL INTERFACE
DVI was created by the Digital Display Working Group, and stands for Digital Visual Interface. It allows for a high speed uncompressed connection between a digital television, personal computer, and other DVI-based consumer electronics devices. The input is something like you’d find on the back of your computer. One big benefit of DVI is the uncompressed transfer of high definition video.
While you don’t see it when you receive HD programming, it goes through a conversion from the source to the set-top box to your screen. Usually, component cables are used to transfer the red-blue-green signal. The advantage of DVI is that it only requires one cable to transfer the red-blue-green signal, and the speed it transfers an image is significantly faster than the analog component cables, which benefits the overall viewing experience on DLP, Plasma, and LCD televisions.
Combined with HDCP, DVI was the standard for digital television until a few years ago when HDMI was introduced.
HDMI - HIGH-DEFINITION MULTIMEDIA INTERFACE
HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, and like DVI, it allows for the uncompressed data transfer of video between a digital TV and HDMI-enabled consumer electronics devices. The big difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI transfers the video and audio signal. DVI only carries the video signal.
According to the HDMI’s official Web site, the advantages of HDMI are:
1) The highest quality video seen and audio heard
2) Fewer cables behind the TV means less mess and confusion-free connection
3) Automatically configures remote controls of devices connected by HDMI
4) Automatically adjusts video content to most effective format
5) HDMI is compatible with DVI, which means it will allow connection to PCs
Because it combines the audio and video signal, HDMI has tremendous support from the MPAA. It was created by some of the heavyweights in the consumer electronics industry - Hitachi, Matsu****a, Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson, and Toshiba. The HDMI input is similar to a USB connector on a PC.
With a very simplistic understanding of the technology, it’s time to answer the original questions listed above:
If I purchase a new HDTV is it better to purchase one with DVI/HDCP?
Yes, you will want to purchase a television with DVI/HDCP or HDMI/HDCP. In my opinion, the best purchase option for a TV or any consumer electronics device (DVD player, DVR, set-top box) is one with HDMI/HDCP. DVI is an old format, and is secondary to HDMI. HDMI has room for growth, and because it has support from some of the major consumer electronics manufacturers, it’s hard to see it being replaced in the next decade or so. Regardless, buying a TV without either input would be a bad decision if you want to ensure usability of the TV a decade from now. Some televisions come with both inputs.
If I don't, how can it become DVI/HDCP-compliant?
Whether you have DVI or HDMI, there’s no way to convert the DVI or HDMI signal other than through a DVI or HDMI cable.

DVI and HDMI is in most cases possible to connect depending on for example graphic card in the comp, resolutions and stuff and even the tv.
I haven´t tried with my tv and comp yet since I have to buy a DVI to HDMI cable first.
It´s also possible to use the old d-sub (vga) from the comp to the tv, most LCD´s have that.
You don´t need a dvd with HDMI, but you could use one if you want. But dvd is not HD signals so you don´t need it that way actually.
I connect my dvd with component (just to confuse you more) instead and got a much better picture than with scart for example.
Search for yourself on the net, preferably in Finnish and then all this DVI, HDCP and HDMI connection might get clear for you, it´s too complicated for me to explain in a easy way in English. :p

Sorry to Finnish in Marika
Noiden taulu TVden resoluutiot on mitä sattuu. Ainakin ATI:n ajureissa on HDTV juttuja.
Kuvaputki on tällä hetkellä paras TV. LCD telkuissa on paljon eroja. Varsinkin musta on yleensä kauhiaa. Joissain on jopa valovuotoja.

Don't like to watch sports?
I have been thinking about Lost and Alias, but haven't started buying yet. Prices start to be right though now for Lost S1 and Alias S1-3...
No I don't usually watch sport. If I feel Sporty I gon running/walking or pumping iron. It's good to my health, I have lose many KG's fat in that system.
Buy those, they are worth of buying. Dont keep pauses in Alias. I didnt like when it came in TV. In DVD when can watch many episodes, it rocks. I watch season 4 in two days.
Sorry to Finnish in Marika
Noiden taulu TVden resoluutiot on mitä sattuu. Ainakin ATI:n ajureissa on HDTV juttuja.
Kuvaputki on tällä hetkellä paras TV. LCD telkuissa on paljon eroja. Varsinkin musta on yleensä kauhiaa. Joissain on jopa valovuotoja.
Kiitos!

Yes, I am sure Alias (like Lost) benefit from watching episodes one after the other. I will seriously think about getting those boxes.
Doesn't Alias S5 start here soon on tv? You gonna skip and wait for dvd box?

you misunderstood me there Alex... I said that the Animal Rescue, Animal Precint (both are shows) on Animal Planet
What strikes me is how many US shows Europeans are watching. Don't you guys have your own TV shows?
I watch some US stuff (ER, Law and Order, etc) and some British (the Frost and Rebus mysteries, the Royal, etc) and even some Canadian (news and public affairs programs). But actually although we now have literally hundreds of channels, we watch less TV now than we ever did.

 sorry, I didn't read all the sentence, or didn't figurout it:p OK, but that reality shows i have no seen it now, i'm going to watch it sounds interesting for being animal nature:D

Atleast here in my country we have our own tv shows and reality shows and programs, that's why many here are watching in my answers strange names and strange programs:D Few times I watch that ones from other countries, thought they're very good ones:great:

in my country pretty much the only icelandic production is news.... The rest is pretty much American shows.... every once in a blue moon we get those good BBC educational series, and some good BBC television series, such as Cutting It, Monarch of the Glenn and Ballykisangel.
But I personally watch the BBC a lot... I can't get enough of Mrs. Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping up Appearances.
So I could watch dvds from my comp in tv screen with dvi to hdmi cable? This applies only to LCD tvs, not normal tvs, normal tvs don't have this hdmi thingy?
Component, what component? *desperate look* :p
How about S-Video thingy?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video
You have new computer, right? So there should be connector for that cable.
If you have similar connector in your TV/DVD/VCR you should be able to connect your PC to "normal" TV.
For example, that Thomson model which i mentioned earlier has that connector.
the one about connecting the computer and tv....cause once I was trying to connect my computer to the tv but it did not work...Oh okay, thanks, wasn't sure which one you were referring to.
What strikes me is how many US shows Europeans are watching. Don't you guys have your own TV shows?Yes of course. But for the benefit of most readers here I for example named mostly American shows. I have loved many, many British shows also. I hardly watch Finnish tv shows though.

Ollappa Hyvä vuan. Oikeasti hyvät LCD taulutelkut on törkykalliita. Tonnilla saa keskinkertasta ja alle. Parilla tonnilla ihan Ok kamaa.
Watching hockey can increase your heart rate too :p?

8 ms on hyvä mikäli se pitää paikkansa. Testien mukaan noi ilmoitetut ajat on vähän mitä sattuu. Jossain testissä saatiin ajaksi 24 ms vaikka oli ilmoitettu 8ms pakkauksessa. Littunäytössä on muuten DVI melkein pakollinen tai joutuu lataamaan Clear Type tuning Power Toyn Windows XP:lle.

Well, this is BenQ FP91G+. This should be pretty good if you believe what is said in the net. But because my last monitor was worst monitor in the world(it was sooo dark) now this one feels too bright.:p Well, nothing bigger problems than that. Everything looks good, but little bit too bright. Well, like you will notice when you read some articles, black is not black in these monitors.
My current monitor is too dark also. So I'd expect same transition difficulties as you are experiencing...
Nah! Shakiras belly dance is far more better.
I totaly agree. :D :]
What's it about?
One Tree Hill is about two half-brothers, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) who are 3 months apart. Dan Scott (Nathan's father) (Paul Johansson) and Karen Roe (Lucas's mother) (Moira Kelly) were highschool sweethearts. Karen had gotten pregnant with Lucas at the end of highschool and Dan left her to raise Lucas on her own. After Dan had left Karen, he met Deb and she got pregnant in the first year of college. Dan and Deb got married and had Nathan, and Dan wanted nothing to do with Lucas. 16-17 years later, Karen and Lucas, aswell as Dan, Deb and Nathan have come to be living in the same town of Tree Hill. Dan is now trying to be a part of Lucas's life, but Karen won't let him. Deb and Karen end up becoming best friends and business partners, which send Dan over the edge. Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), is a tutor at the school and has been asked to tutor Nathan. After a few sessions, Nathan asks Haley out on a date which Lucas doesn't like because he doesn't want her dating Nathan. Even with Lucas's rejection, they continue dating for a year and end up getting married. Brooke (Sophia Bush) meets Lucas at a basketball game and they arrange for a date. They date for a few weeks, but Lucas meets Brooke's best friend Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and they have an affair behind Brooke's back. In the end, Lucas loses Brooke, but Lucas and Peyton agree to just be friends.

Well, i guess that show is #2 in my book if we are talking about best british tv shows. Coupling is/was great, forgot to mention that earlier, definitely one of my fave shows. :D
I just bought the second boxed set, I'm trying to watch one episode a week to make it last. They never repeated it until recently on satellite TV so I've waited ages to see re-runs.
Too bad that everyone can`t see finnish TV, it`s all about re-runs, classic after classic. I guess that they have showed that show here few times.:uhh:
Now they are showing here classics like, Married with Children, Melrose Place, MacGyver, Beverly Hills 90210, Miami Vice...pretty new stuff..:p
Finnish TV rules! :boogie:
So, what digibox should I get?
Topfield TF 5100 PVRc seems to have won some tests, is it good?

Cable version
It's ok
remeber that you need "kaapelikortti" to see TV5Mondo, MusicTV, Travelchannel and DW-tv channels. It cost about 20 e in year
My friend have Masterpiece version (200 GB HD instead 160 GB).
Yep, cable version. Yeah, I'll be getting that cable card, thanks for the tip, Welho's page said 20€/year. There are some offers there that include the first year of the card free plus discount on channels, might be getting a couple channel 'packets' aswell. But then I'd be in a situation where I have 30 or 40 channels, how would I ever choose what to watch when sometimes even now have troubles deciding :uhh:
Yeah, I noticed that Masterpiece version, I think it's about 100-150 Euros more than 160GB version...
Some new series starting here soon, dunno yet which ones will end up on my list... perhaps one of the following?
Grey's Anatomy
Prison Break
NCIS
House I missed first and third episodes of Grey's Anatomy, but what I've seen, looks ok. Prison Break seem to be designed to hook you :p
I like NCIS very much, but House M.D. I feel needs a little something, or else it will get repetitive.

Well, try to avoid that hook. If someone is watching that show, i guess that they`ll do the same thing that they did to Stargate. They`ll quit it and don`t show how it ends. (2nd season):uhh:
I know, I am still bitter they stopped showing Stargate
I'd like to see Stargate Atlantis too here...

hmm... after seeing I, Claudius (http://www.historyinfilm.com/claudius/) (1976) rerun on YLE24 last spring... and more recently ROME (http://www.hbo.com/rome/)... I think I'm hooked again - after all these years - and could be, that Santa might bring me a couple of boxed DVD sets of these series for Christmas..?
;)
...if I'm good, of course...
John - :p
Well, try to avoid that hook. If someone is watching that show, i guess that they`ll do the same thing that they did to Stargate.I've been looking at buying Stargate dvd boxes, did they show 5 or 6 seasons here? I was thinking of perhaps starting from seasons I haven't seen yet. Hope the old seasons will still be available later on...
Looks like region 2 Stargate Atlantis is only now starting to come out, season 1 seem to be out just now. Has there been other seasons out already in region 1?

If you still can remember what happened on 5th season, it might be smart decision. It`s insane how expensive those boxes are. 8th and 9th season, 90€ each.:faint:
Well, now when big boys cancelled that show, maybe some channel here will buy those last 5 seasons, or maybe not..

Who get idea sell sesons in DVD have to pay me much money.
I survived from Hullut Päivät/Galna Dagar
I only buyed ten Cd's and Four DVD's there.
But now I go again that place they every year have that wrestling contest called Hullut päivät. I noticed carrying several season boxes like Gilmore Girls seasons 1, 2 and 3 plus Lost Season 2.
For those who don't know what that is Hullut Päivät, I will tell. It is happening where you can push, punch, kick or bite another human. Yes that is legal. You just say I try to find cheap stuff to buy. Nobody don't even notice violence. They just will push or kick somebody else. These happening is once or twice every year in finland. If you visit in Finland and see yellow ghosts(labelled Hullut päivät, Galna Dagar), you are in danger zone.
So, what digibox should I get?
Topfield TF 5100 PVRc seems to have won some tests, is it good?I got that digibox and so far I am happy with it. Haven't yet gotten my vcr to work with it, I guess I should first connect vcr to tv and from vcr to digibox. But I have been too lazy to fiddle with the cables.

One day I was waiting for my bus home, and it was over 5 minutes late. I got on, and was wondering why an earth is it jam packed. Then I noticed all those yellow bags. Augh, Hullut Päivät. People go crazy.

How much was Lost season 2?

It was about 46,50 then, now it is 35 euros
Crazy Days are totally crazy, avoid if you can.
About those LCD -TV we talking earlier
I have tested Philips 32" Lcd in Hobby Hall Hulabaloo catalogue (My mother TV).
Problems are when material is not HD-Quality. Scaling from DVD, Analog and Digi-TV material make picture weird. You can't watch it from close distance. I think I need 1,5 to 2 meter distance to get okay picture. More problems came becuase certain cables wont transfer progressive signal, only interlaced signal.
Solution
I connect one PC to TV via HDMI-DVI cable. It have AMD Xp 2000+, 1024 MB 266 MHz memory, Nvidia GF 4600 (D-sub and DVI), 40 GB HDD, LG DVD-burner. PC-audio is connected to Stereos, because I didn't have long tos-link cable to AV-switch.
DVD and VLC-player will scale DVD already to 720p, so no need for using TV own scaling chips.
I add SigmaTek DIGI-TV terrestial USB to record some TV-shows. I will use it as TV when scaled digi-tv and analog tv seems too blurry. I even broke that small antenna by accident but super glue was my little helper. (Weird I get all channels with that small antenna. Verkossa tv-show has big problems with it, they didn't get any channels).
I put D-link Wireless USB adapter to connect it to Internet and to my computers shared folders.
I know that my mother will use still old systems like DVD-players and DIGI-box. I have used to my HTPC:s so I will use that PC when visiting at my Mom aparment (Not so far away because my Wireless lan is connected to Her pc). I will wait LaserTV and those new formats like HD-DVD and Blu-Ray before buy any tv. I use my second PC as HTPC (Analog-TV-Card and DigiTV-card in cable with Conax Cam module). I don't any real tv. My X-box and PS2 is my Mothers aparment, connected via AV-switch to that Philips TV.
Thet PC need more power to make picture better(Scaling opertions, Post-Prosessing, Video enchanments etc) and playing HD-material like this (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx). And off course water cooling. No one want loud Windmill in livingroom.
Nowdays PC is gonna be part of HomeTheater systems. Usually you get better DVD-picture quality with good PC and good display adapter than cheap or medicore DVD-player, you can even adjust picture settings, colours etc... Good sound-card can beat cheap or medicore CD-players in sound quality. Some copyprotected CD's wont play DVD-players etc... with DualBoot system (Windows and Linux) you have better changes. Not saying that you have Internet and Digibox which have Harddisk and DVD-burner (Softwares to burn and edit what you have record).
Just waiting Vista, new drives like HD-DVD, Blu-ray, display adapter with HDMI connetors and HDCP-chips.

Problems are when material is not HD-Quality.
Tell me about it. You can say it in a simple way that the picture on your tv is "too good" so you see how bad picture you actually have! ;)
A "normal" tv has so much fuzzier picture so the picture automaticly seems better for the eye...
I use two different old sattelite boxes with only scart-output so I have no choise, you sorta get used to it after a while. :smirk:

Which boxes do you have?
I have at least the first season of each of these: M*A*S*H (just the absolute best show ever), Reba, Dukes of Hazzard, Soap and Cheers. I have Fastlane on DVD as well, although that's homemade....they never made it available to purchase. I also have the 1972 Canada vs. USSR hockey series in a box set....including all eight games as they were seen on television at the time.
