On Sunday December 3rd 2006, the Kennedy Center will
honor the following artists for their lifetime of contributions
to the arts and American culture.

The 2006 Kennedy Center Honors will be broadcast on CBS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 29th annual Kennedy Center Honors will award five performing arts icons for their lifetime contributions to American culture. The 2006 Honorees--Grammy, Tony, and Academy award–winning musical theater composer and producer Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showIndividual&entity_id=16264&source_type=A); conductor Zubin Mehta (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showIndividual&entity_id=16269&source_type=A); seven-time Grammy-winning country singer, songwriter, and actress Dolly Parton (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showIndividual&entitY_id=8662&source_type=A); Motown singer, songwriter, producer, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Smokey Robinson (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showIndividual&entitY_id=16268&source_type=A); and three-time Oscar-winning film director and producer Steven Spielberg (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showIndividual&entitY_id=16270&source_type=A)--will be saluted by stars from the world of the performing arts at an invitation-only gala performance.

This year we honor five extraordinary international artists whose abundant contributions to their fields are remarkable. They have transformed the culture of our country and of the world,” said Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman. “Andrew Lloyd Webber has led a seismic change in our musical theater becoming the most popular theater composer in the world; conductor Zubin Mehta’s profound artistry and devotion to music make him a world treasure; Dolly Parton’s creativity and spirit make her country music’s best international ambassador; Smokey Robinson’s song and voice have created the soundtrack for the lives of a generation of Americans; and Steven Spielberg’s films make him one of the most successful and accomplished directors of all time.”

The annual Honors Gala has become the highlight of the Washington cultural year. The 2006 Honorees will be saluted by stars from the world of the performing arts at a gala performance in the Kennedy Center’s Opera House on Sunday evening, December 3, to be attended by the President of the United States and Mrs. Bush, and by artists from around the globe.

The President and Mrs. Bush will receive the Honorees and members of the Artists Committee, who nominate them, along with the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees at the White House prior to the gala performance. The 2006 Kennedy Center Honors Gala concludes with a supper dance in the Grand Foyer.

The Kennedy Center Honors will be bestowed the night before the gala on Saturday, December 2, at a State Department dinner, hosted by the Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.

The Honors Gala will be recorded for later broadcast on the CBS Network for the 29th consecutive year as a two-hour prime time special.

George Stevens, Jr., who created the Honors in 1978 with Nick Vanoff, will produce and co-write the show for the 29th year. The Honors telecast has been honored with five Emmy’s for Outstanding Program as well as the Peabody Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television.

Delta Air Lines, the official airline of the Kennedy Center Honors television broadcast, will provide transportation for the performers and television crew that will be coming to Washington for the Honors Gala. Boeing is proud to underwrite the Kennedy Center Honorees’ Luncheon and Kennedy Center Honors Gala Supper.

The Honors recipients recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts— whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures or television—are selected by the Center’s Board of Trustees. The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence. The Honors are not designated by art form or category of artistic achievement; the selection process, over the years, has produced balance among the various arts and artistic disciplines.

Michael M. Kaiser, president of the Kennedy Center, expressed the national cultural center’s gratitude to the many individuals involved in the success of the Honors program. “In addition to recognizing our most treasured artists, the Kennedy Center Honors also extensively supports the many performing arts initiatives, education and public service programming, and national outreach efforts.”

With only three days to go until the Kennedy Center Honors gala, I've got some more deets on the festivities honoring, among others, my idol, Dolly Parton.

I'm told Shania Twain has been added to the Parton tribute. The country crooner hasn't asked for too much in her green room. Her only demand, according to a source, is a raw-food menu of avocados, lemons, papayas, red and green seedless grapes, dried figs and dates, cucumbers, bananas, sugar-free fresh-squeezed orange juice, flat bottled water, salt and pepper, along with a cutting board and paring and chef's knives.

Shania Twain! Zubin Mehta's young granddaughter Shenaya was excited to meet her, telling the crossover country star that they share the same name. Which prompted Twain to ask the granddaughter of the former director of the New York Philharmonic if she was named after her, a songstress whose hit list includes "Man! I Feel Like a Woman." Shenaya Chinoy said she answered, after a brief pause: No.

Artists get a star-studded salute

By Karen Thomas, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — The sounds of country, Motown, Broadway and classical music combined with Hollywood star power in the nation's capital Sunday for the Kennedy Center Honors.
Stars from across the entertainment industry turned out. Among them: Tom Hanks, Liam Neeson, Reese Witherspoon, Aretha Franklin, India Arie, Jessica Simpson, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire and Josh Groban.

They gathered to pay tribute to director Steven Spielberg, country's Dolly Parton, Motown's Smokey Robinson, Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and conductor Zubin Mehta. The stars joined President Bush and first lady Laura Bush for the 29th awards ceremony, in which the Kennedy Center recognizes artists for their lifetime contribution to the arts and to American culture. The two-hour gala in the center's opera house was taped to air Dec. 26 on CBS (9 p.m. ET/PT).

Witherspoon and Simpson were there to honor fellow blonde Parton. Simpson relied heavily on cue cards to perform 9 to 5 and missed a few lines.

"Dolly, you make me so nervous I can't even sing the words right," Simpson said before leaving the stage.

Witherspoon fared a little better with the same Parton tune just moments earlier. The Walk the Line Oscar winner warbled several lines of 9 to 5 a cappella before giggling, "Someone else will sing this better later."

The show featured plenty of musical numbers. Parton also was celebrated by a duet from American Idol's Carrie Underwood and Kenny Rogers, who sang Islands in the Stream.

Another duo, Hanks and Neeson, paid tribute to Spielberg. Hanks introduced five World War II veterans and a Holocaust survivor during the show. Renee Firestone, the Holocaust survivor, emphasized the importance of the work of the director of Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. "Thank you, Steven, for what you have done for history. You are our hero."

Webber said the Kennedy Center award was better than a Grammy or an Oscar because "it's not connected to any of the industry." His former wife, Sarah Brightman, introduced the segment honoring him. When Broadway star Betty Buckley paid tribute by singing Memory from Webber's Cats, the audience responded with a standing ovation.

During the segment honoring Robinson, which was introduced by Franklin, Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley and Arie sang Going to a Go-Go, and Sam Moore and Jonny Lang performed Tracks of My Tears.

Robinson spoke earlier about receiving the honor: "It means everything to me," because the award is "for your impact on society."

Seen and heard at the weekend doings for the five recipients of this year's Kennedy Center Honors:
• Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman has his hands full helping the arts center to reach new heights each season.
But sometimes, the gig has its perks.
Mr. Schwarzman gets to drapethe Kennedy Center Honors ribbons around the winners every December, a simple act thattookon a new flavor this year when it came time to decorate Dolly Parton.
Ever the gracious Southern gal, Miss Parton, kissed Mr. Schwarzman twice, once on each side of his face, after he looped the award around her.
He stood there, beaming, while Miss Parton's smile only got brighter.
"He's enjoying it too much," she cried to the crowd's delight.
• CBS newscaster Julie Chen looked smashing in form-fitting fluorescent purple and made a graceful entrance on the arm of her hubby, network chief Leslie Moonves--despite a wee problem with a ripped hemline.
• Wardrobe malfunctions weren't on the mind of Jessica Simpson, stunning in basic black with flaxen tresses pulled back in a graceful chingon. Also fetching: India.Arie, stunning in silver; and Shania Twain -- radiant in white chiffon.

Reese And Shania Help Recognise Showbiz Veterans

4 DECEMBER 2006

A host of Hollywood's bright young things paid tribute to five more experienced showbiz names on Sunday at Washington DC's John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Reese Witherspoon, who recently announced her split from husband Ryan Phillippe, was on sparkling form as she helped honour country singer Dolly Parton.

The Walk The Line star even sang a few lines of 9 To 5 in front of an audience that included President Bush, his wife Laura, and soul singer Aretha Franklin.

While many of the guests, including Joan Collins, put in a glamorous appearance, it was Shania Twain who stole the limelight on the red carpet in a revealing, hot pink dress.

But the night truly belonged to veterans of screen, stage and music. As well as Dolly, Schindler's List director Steven Spielberg, Motowns's Smokey Robinson, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and conductor Zubin Mehta were also recognised for their lifetime contributions to the arts and to American culture.

Broadway star Sarah Brightman was on hand to introduce a tribute to her former husband and Cats creator Andrew, while Liam Neeson and Tom Hanks praised Steven's movie-making career. "Thank you, Steven, for what you have done for history," said Tom. "You are our hero."

Dolly, others the toast of Washington celebration

Kennedy Center event a tribute to 5 stars' career achievements

By TERRY MORROW, morrow2@knews.com
December 4, 2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Eyeing a crowd in black ties and fancy ball gowns there to honor her Sunday night at the Kennedy Center, a humble Dolly Parton dressed down her own reason for all this fuss.

If she were in charge of the evening, "everybody would be wearing overalls and blue jeans, whatever made them comfortable," she said moments before the tribute began. "But on special nights like this, people love to get dressed up. And they should. It's not every night you get to go to the White House and the Kennedy Center."

The 60-year-old Sevier County native, wearing a tight-fitting designer gown with sequins, received a prestigious Kennedy Center Honor, one of the highest artistic tributes in the country, for "her lifetime contributions to American culture," organizers said. Her influence as a songwriter, singer, overall entertainer and businesswoman were part of the tribute.

She was honored along with other artistic icons - film director Steven Spielberg, singer Smoky Robinson, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and conductor Zubin Mehta.

Earlier in the day, Parton and the other honorees received praise from President Bush at the White House.

"It was great," Parton said of the White House visit, adding that she did extend her own invitation to the Bushes.

She asked them to visit her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge. But, Parton deadpanned, "they didn't say they'd come."

As part of the Kennedy Center tribute, which will air Dec. 26 on CBS, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Simpson, Allison Krauss, Vince Gill and Shania Twain showed up to speak of Parton.

Simpson, an admitted fan of Parton's, sang the Parton-penned tune, "9 to 5." Carrie Underwood and Kenny Rogers covered the Rogers and Parton duet, "Islands in the Stream."

Witherspoon, who played June Carter Cash in "Walk The Line," spoke from the Kennedy Center stage of Parton's worthiness of the honor. As a child, Witherspoon used to sing "Islands in the Stream" at recess, and she re-enacted a scene from "9 to 5" in an elementary school show. "I wanted to be Dolly, literally," Witherspoon said.

But other celebrities had their say about Parton as well.

"She's the real McCoy, a real icon," said actor Liam Neeson, who was there on behalf of Spielberg.

Reba McEntire told the Kennedy Center audience about her first experience with Parton. She remembered Parton's larger-than-life presence during their first meeting backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. "You had the big hair, airy and shiny. It looked like cotton candy," McEntire said.

McEntire told the audience how Parton's father, the late Lee Parton, paid the doctor who delivered baby Dolly with a sack of feed, and "she's been raking in the dough ever since. There ain't nobody like Dolly Parton."

Parton's discography alone would be enough for commendation. Dozens of chart-topping hits - from the despair of "Coat of Many Colors" to the heartbreak of "Jolene" to the sentimentality of "I Will Always Love You" - have cemented her role as a country artist with few peers.

Several of her songs were born from her experiences as an impoverish child in Sevier County.

She is also credited with being one of the biggest country artists to cross over to mainstream acceptance with such pop songs as "Two Doors Down" and "Here You Come Again."

Her longevity was noted, too. In 2006, she sang on her first No. 1 record in more than a decade with "When I Get Where I'm Going" featuring Brad Paisley. She also was nominated for her second Academy Award for writing "Travelin' Thru," appearing in the film "Transamerica."

The audience packed with some of the country's biggest dignitaries, including the President and first lady.

Also in the crowd were Knoxville residents Patty and Jerry Lewis and Kathy and Joe May, who won the opportunity to attend through a Friends of the Smokies auction earlier this year.

"This is (a) much bigger (event) than we thought it would be," said Kathy May, a West Knoxville resident who works in communications for the Tennessee Valley Authority. " this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"With Dolly Parton being one of the recipients, it makes this even more meaningful."

Reese Witherspoon Pays Tribute to Dolly Parton
MONDAY DECEMBER 04, 2006 07:55AM EST
By Anika Clark and Linda Kramer

Reese Witherspoon paid tribute Sunday night to fellow Tennessean Dolly Parton at the annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC, calling Parton an "amazing country legend" and telling her "I will always love you."

Witherspoon also shared a few favorite "Dollyisms" with the audience: "I don't get offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb and I know that I'm definitely not blonde." And, "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap."

Parton smiled and blew kisses from the box where she sat with the night's fellow honorees Steven Spielberg, Smokey Robinson, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Zubin Mehta – as well as President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.

Earlier in the evening, as she entered on the red carpet, Parton, 60, told PEOPLE: "I love what I do, and I'm very lucky. Here I am at the Kennedy Center. It feels like I made it."

As for Witherspoon, 30, she told PEOPLE after the show: "It's such an extraordinary honor to be an appreciative fan and to be here to honor her and her songwriting and her life and career."

Witherspoon's appearance was her first major public event since splitting from her husband Ryan Phillippe in October. Asked if she expected to be out and about more, she said "Sure."

Fellow blondes Jessica Simpson and Carrie Underwood took the stage to perform some of Parton's best-known hits. Singing "9 to 5," a visibly nervous Simpson muffed a line and, as she finished, said: "Dolly you make so nervous. I can't even sing the words right."

Underwood, Kenny Rogers, Shania Twain, Vince Gill and Alison Krauss also sang Parton standards, and Witherspoon and Reba McEntire then joined them on stage to bow to Parton. Witherspoon stood next to Simpson and put an arm around her; apparently comforting the still upset Simpson. (Simpson later sang the number over for the CBS broadcast of the gala, set to air Dec. 26).

Simpson wasn't the only star to flub a line. Aretha Franklin, praising her hometown friend and fellow Motown great Smokey Robinson, botched a line but went on to say: "Smokey I found inspiration in your success. You made me feel like a natural woman." The Temptations, India.Arie and Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley then serenaded Robinson.

Josh Groban sang "Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera as its composer, Lloyd Webber, sat in his box and mouthed the words.

Tom Hanks and Liam Neeson led the tribute to Spielberg. Neeson said the director of Jaws and Schindler's List used his movies "to enlarge our world" and Hanks called him "one of the great masters."

Shania was sitting directly in front of Reba, and both were singing along. Hmmmmm. Reba is putting together a duets album -- perhaps the two were practicing.....?

Dolly Parton Receives Kennedy Center Honor

Dolly Parton was recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday night (Dec. 3) in Washington, D.C., with a notable list of admirers paying tribute to her in song. Kenny Rogers and Carrie Underwood teamed for "Islands in the Stream," Alison Krauss offered "Jolene" and "My Tennessee Mountain Home" and Shania Twain sang "Coat of Many Colors" with Krauss on harmonies. In addition, Jessica Simpson performed "9 to 5" and Vince Gill sang "I Will Always Love You." Reba McEntire and Reese Witherspoon also spoke on behalf of Parton's numerous accomplishments. Fellow recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors this year included Smokey Robinson, Steven Spielberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and conductor Zubin Mehta.

Second Chance For Jessica

It was harder to figure out what was going on with Simpson. The 26-year-old pop starlet kept one arm clutched to her midsection while singing "9 to 5." At the end, she blurted, "Dolly, you make me so nervous, I can't even sing the words right," then scuttled awkwardly off the stage.

Witnesses told us she was a wreck before she went on, weeping while the video tribute to Parton played and pacing anxiously during performances by Carrie Underwood, Kenny Rogers, Alison Krauss and Shania Twain.

Producer George Stevens told us, "She was very upset, so we said, 'Would you like to have another shot at it?' " Simpson then redid the song for the TV cameras (the show will air on CBS Dec. 26) once the audience had left the Opera House.

Yup, beautiful dress or not, I don't think it was the proper place for it. Shania 9 out of 10 times is elegant and stunning but time to time she really has an awful outfit or something tacky. Entertainment I suppose but not the Shania I like best.

I guess I was reacting to a tired old scenario. I can make a hundred comments praising Shania and it gets little response. But if I criticize her, I get swarmed with people objecting. That doesn't mean every single one of them is outraged or blind, but it says something when only a negative comment gets such a reaction. I try to be objective and consider what a non Shania fan would think. I am pretty sure most people who are not emotionally committed to Shania would readily agree with me.

I have seen dozens and dozens of so called negative comments about Shania or a dress she wears, nearly not all create a big buzz. If I don't like a certain thing Shania does or wears, I have said so. Never have I felt I was attacked for my opinion. Perhaps you have some past experiences that you are projecting to current situation to escalate the feeling? People do usually respond to matters when they have a differing opinion, simply because that's worth a discussion. Naturally also how much a person pushes their opinion and repeats it also contributes how a discussion goes and in what way differences of opinion are expressed.

Yup, I have to deal with that all the time. More so these last few years as compared to the days of old... for obvious reasons.

The old Shania, now that was a two thumbs Up kinda gal. :D
Oh well, times continue to change and contradicts are made.

Cheeky question! ;) No, I didn't take a poll. But I observe how people around me, none of whom are Shania fans, react. And I see how members of one of the Dixie Chicks boards react to the subject of Shania. I'm afraid non fans do not share our rosy view of Shania from what I have observed. So, would you say that your 'poll group' is slightly small?

Well, to avoid misunderstanding, I'll say that I really, really, really (you get the picture) dislike that pink dress worn by Shania. So my motive is not Shania defending ;)
I thought it was interesting you mentioned this other messageboard. I have seen some other artist's messageboards, and most (like us here) have a certain atmostphere that is created, especially if in the country genre or near it, and certain similar ways of thinking often shows. So there can be a lot of reasons for such thinking and how it is born. I'm just trying to explain that a certain messageboard is not necessarily in my opinion a wide variety of people, not 'most people'.
And to be honest, I am baffled that Chicks fans would be appalled at what Shania wears. Isn't Ms. Maines often wearing same or similar kind of model dresses as this Evil Pink Dress? Well, I haven't seen that many pics, so don't know about the often part, it's more than likely that the pics I have happened to see have just happened to have similar models.

Hold on Marika! You are presuming too much.

Yeah, my poll group is small but it is everyone I know.

I didn't say that Chicks fans are appalled at Shania's dress. They are not discussing it and couldn't care less. I'm sure this is not on their radar. The big news today is the Chicks' 5 Grammy nominations and the possibilities that holds for overcoming the boycotts. Chicks fans are generally more down to earth and much more blunt than Shania fans are allowed to be. They would not be offended by Shania's outfit but would see it as more evidence of superficiality (I think). The Chicks dress with considerable variety but haven't dressed so revealingly that I am aware of - which of course could be because they don't have Shania's figure.

Fans of other artists don't influence what I think. They are no more "down to earth" or "blunt" then the rest of us just because they may choose to criticize someone, usually someone which they know very little about and hate anyway therefore could never have an "objective view" of them if their life depended on it. I know more about Shania then what these kind of people ever will so who has the more "objective view"? the informed or the ignorant?
I don't criticize Shania, why? because I have no desire to, I don't see the point, she has never done anything which I would consider morally or ethically wrong so why would I? This doesnt mean that I don't have an objective view, because I do, but it goes into more important things then the likes of a friggin' dress showing some cleavage.

You can't go by what the Dixie Chicks or other country artists' fans are saying about Shania. Most will have nothing nice to say about her and very few will compliment. Those fans are in their own little world.

Shania's breasts did not make TMZ, X17Online, PerezHilton, JustJared, JJB ect... and nothing negative was said on any of those entertainment shows which leads me to believe that NOBODY cares, it's not an issue. I haven't read any comments about that dress being inappropriate on those blogs/boards. Simply beautiful, she's so beautiful, I love that she's so private, best she's ever looked, she looks stunning, she looks gorgeous, love her so much, I miss her so much is what's posted from non Shania fans.

You could argue that Shania doesn't generate the same media attention the way Madonna, Simpson, Spears, Lohan, Hilton and Ritchie do but if wearing that dress was such a huge mistake it wouldn't matter, the media would have nailed her. Look what happened to Danny Devito and Faith Hill recently.

Bottom line, WHO CARES! :chill:

Jessica Invited to Sing "9 to 5" With Dolly

Parton has forgiven Simpson for botching her song at the Kennedy Center Honors.
Friday, December 8, 2006

Country great Dolly Parton has more than forgiven Jessica Simpson for forgetting the lines to her "9 to 5" anthem during a Kennedy Center Honors tribute over the weekend - she has invited the pop star to her home.

The gracious singer politely applauded and smiled as Simpson apologized for botching her song but admits she's glad it wasn't her up on stage on Sunday night.

She says, "It is an intimidating experience... Jessica is so great that one day they will probably honor her. If I were fortunate to be asked to perform for her I would probably forget my wig.

"She can come over to my house and we will sing it together any time."

Not ragging on Jessica
-- Dolly Parton isn't among those taking whacks at poor Jessica Simpson for messing up "9 to 5" during her performance of the song at last Sunday's Kennedy Center Honors.
In a statement, Dolly says, "Jessica is so talented that I'm sure that someday they will be paying tribute to her, and I would be honored to perform for her."

"But I'll probably be so nervous that I'll forget my wig!," she adds.

(CMT Hot Dish is a weekly feature written by veteran columnist Hazel Smith. Author of the cookbook, Hazel's Hot Dish: Cookin' With Country Stars, she also shares her recipes at CMT.com.)

Dolly Parton, conductor

Zubin Mehta, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber were recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors during ceremonies on Dec. 3, but when photos were taken of the five honorees, it was Dolly's star that shined the brightest. Always the country girl, while others listed the city of their birth, Dolly listed hers as Sevier County, Tenn.

Kennedy family members in attendance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., included the late president's daughter, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and her husband. Also in attendance were JFK's brother, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and sister, Jean Kennedy Smith, along with Ethel Kennedy, wife of the late Robert F. Kennedy. Included in Dolly's entourage were Stella Parton (her sister), Timothy C. Rauhuff (Stella's attorney son and Dolly's nephew) and Don Warden (her longtime manager).

Hosted by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the ceremonies were held in the Benjamin Franklin Room at the U.S. Department of State. Guests were served crab cakes and salad, followed by a lamb entrée with potatoes and asparagus, with baked Alaska for dessert. Each honoree was toasted by a friend: Alison Krauss toasted Dolly eloquently, Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. toasted Smokey Robinson and fellow filmmaker George Lucas honored Steven Spielberg.

A Sunday morning brunch was hosted by the show's producer, George Stevenson Jr., at Café MoZU in the Mandarin Oriental hotel. At 4:30 p.m., the group was shuttled to the White House, all beautifully decorated for Christmas, where they were welcomed by a military band and a buffet of ham, sweet potatoes, shrimp and other things. The president welcomed the guests, personally recognized each honoree and posed for a photo. The next stop the red carpet at the Kennedy Center and the big show that followed.

The CBS broadcast of the show is set for Dec. 26. Friends paying tribute to Dolly included Reba McEntire, who described Dolly as a diamond in a business filled with rhinestones. Reba said women used to be told what to do and what to wear in country music, but Dolly changed all that. "Because of her, we write, we produce and star in our own TV shows," said Reba.

Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon, a Nashville native, said being blonde, she'd always felt a kinship with Dolly. "Dolly's from Tennessee, and I'm from Tennessee," she said before adding with a down-home smile, "Dolly has a great figure, and I'm from Tennessee."

Upon receiving the nation's highest arts award, Dolly's classic songs were performed in her honor by Krauss, who chose the angelic vocals of Cheryl White and Suzanne Cox to harmonize with her on "Jolene" and "My Tennessee Mountain Home." Krauss added harmony to Shania Twain's rendition of "Coat of Many Colors."

Surprised by Kenny Rogers' appearance, Dolly became emotional when he arrived onstage while Carrie Underwood was singing "Islands in the Stream." But it was Vince Gill who brought the house down with his version of "I Will Always Love You."

You've probably heard that Jessica Simpson almost murdered "9 to 5." Nobody applauded, and she had to sing it over for television. With all those great country singers in the room, why in the world would Simpson open her mouth and try to sing?

A supper dance followed in the foyer of the Kennedy Center where guests were served salad with smoked salmon, beef tenderloin, veggies and something chocolate. With all the good food, glitter and fame, by the end of the night, nobody could recall what the chocolate dessert was.

All of us at CMT send our love and congratulations to the legend, Dolly Parton, the smartest person ever born in the great state of Tennessee and the brightest shining star of them all.

Hey pals, aren't you proud I told you what they ate? It's my CMT gig, after all.

Parton is a prolific songwriter and she said that her favorite song is "Mine is The Coat of Many Colors," which she said is more than a song to her, but it's tribute to the way she was raised. The song was performed by Shania Twain and Alison Kraus at The Kennedy Center Honors.

"It's a philosophy," Parton said. "It's about my mom. It's about my family. It's the way we were."

Jessica Simpson out of Parton tribute

Thu Dec 21, 1:13 PM ET

NEW YORK - Unhappy with her second try at paying tribute to Dolly Parton for the "Kennedy Center Honors," Jessica Simpson has pulled out of the show.

Simpson drew unwanted attention earlier this month when she flubbed the words to Parton's "9 to 5" during a taping of the annual show, grew flustered and fled the stage. Producers gave her a second chance at the song.

But after Simpson saw a tape, she requested the second attempt be pulled from the show, which airs Dec. 26 on CBS.

"She really wasn't happy with her performance and she did want it to be perfect for Dolly, who she idolizes," said Cindi Berger, a spokeswoman for Simpson.

Besides Parton, the Washington, D.C., tribute honors Andrew Lloyd Webber, Zubin Mehta, Smokey Robinson and Steven Spielberg. Caroline Kennedy is the host.

"We appreciate the time and energy Ms. Simpson put into this event and respect the high standards she has for herself and that of the Kennedy Center Honors," said George Stevens Jr., show producer.

Similarly, where but on PBS during pledge week would one encounter a duet of "Memory" by Betty Buckley and Sarah Brightman, belted out during the tribute to Lloyd Webber?

Those singers -- Carrie Underwood, Kenny Rogers, Alison Krauss and Shania Twain -- got through their songs without incident.

CBS' classy Kennedy Center Honors; no Jessica

By Hal Boadeker

Posted on Dec 22, 2006 8:17:37 AM

CBS delivers its finest holiday present a day late: The classy Kennedy Center Honors airs Tuesday.

Remember all that talk about Jessica Simpson's terrible performance of "9 to 5"? She flubbed it front of honoree Dolly Parton and the audience. Then Simpson later redid the performance in an empty hall. Well, CBS announced Thursday that Simpson's performance won't be included in the final show.

Good. Why waste time on inferior material when you have to cram so much good stuff into a two-hour slot? The Kennedy Center Honors will air from 9 to 11 p.m. Tuesday on WKMG-Channel 6.

Here's the CBS statement: "After reviewing tape of the "re-do" performance that was filmed after the live event, Jessica felt it was not what she had hoped to achieve. As a result, she and the producers agreed that it would not be included in the CBS broadcast. We appreciate the time and energy Ms. Simpson put into this event and respect the high standards she has for herself and that of the Kennedy Center Honors."

That's putting a positive spin on a debacle. But at least everyone wised up.

Tuesday's show is especially wonderful for shots of the honorees' reactions. Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon salutes Parton and recounts the singer's self-appraisal: "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap." Parton turns to fellow honoree Zubin Mehta and says, "That's true."

The Parton tribute is the night's finest, and country fans will not want to miss it. Reba McEntire pays heartfelt tribute to Parton's personable style. Then there's the wonderful music: Alison Krauss on "Jolene," Shania Twain on "Coat of Many Colors" (with backup from Krauss) and Vince Gill on "I Will Always Love You."

The segment devoted to Andrew Lloyd Webber contains a sizzling performance from the current London production of "Evita." Elena Roger -- remember that name -- leads a rousing production number of "Buenos Aires." Broadway fans will not want to miss Christine Ebersole, currently of "Grey Gardens," performing "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from "Sunset Boulevard" and Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from "Cats." Josh Groban throws himself into "Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera."

The spoken tributes are far more eloquent than you see on other awards shows. It helps that they're written out. Aretha Franklin honors Smokey Robinson, whom she calls "my oldest and dearest friend." (Franklin also mimics Diana Ross.) Tom Hanks recounts honoree Steven Spielberg's disastrous meeting with Alfred Hitchcock. Itzhak Perlman praises Mehta as a "mensch."

You do not want to miss this show.

The stars shine on D.C.

Kennedy Center tribute entertainingly salutes famed artists.

Dolly Parton receives the best -- and worst -- of it at this year's Kennedy Center Honors.

Reba McEntire and Reese Witherspoon pay tribute to singer-songwriter Parton in speeches. "Dolly always has a way of making everyone feel like they are the only one in the room," McEntire says. "You've just got that gift, girl."

Carrie Underwood, Kenny Rogers, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain and Vince Gill serenade Parton. Silky-voiced Gill croons I Will Always Love You, Parton's most famous song.

Oh, and Jessica Simpson tries to sing Parton's 9 to 5 and quickly leaves the stage, shedding tears and citing nerves.

But the track of Simpson's tears won't be noticeable when CBS broadcasts the 29th annual Kennedy Center Honors, which taped earlier this month. Simpson later redid 9 to 5 in the empty hall, then requested it be pulled from the show because she was unhappy with the second try.

But the Kennedy Center special boasts too many assets to linger over the missteps. The center salutes the career achievements of five artists each year. This year's winners are Parton, singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson, director Steven Spielberg, conductor Zubin Mehta and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Official Washington turns out each year. Applauding these winners are President Bush and first lady Laura Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

In a welcome break from most awards shows, the winners make no speeches. They hear their lives recounted in short biographical films. They watch colleagues sing and offer testimonials. The honorees' surprise is no act; they don't know who will perform in their honor.

Caroline Kennedy hosts the special for the fourth year in a row. Aretha Franklin leads the Robinson tribute, describes his poetic Motown sound and tells him, "I adore you, William `Smokey' Robinson."

Then the special rolls out the Robinson songs: rapper Cee-Lo on The Tears of a Clown, India.Arie on I Second That Emotion and their duet on Going to a Go Go. Sam Moore joins Jonny Lang on The Tracks of My Tears. The Temptations perform Get Ready, The Way You Do the Things You Do and My Girl.

Violinist Itzhak Perlman guides the Mehta celebration and describes the conductor as a mensch. Violinist Pinchas Zukerman performs and conducts the Israel Philharmonic.

Sarah Brightman starts the splashy salute to Lloyd Webber, her ex-husband. "His music of the night is music for all time," she says.

Corey Glover of Living Colour highlights Superstar from Jesus Christ Superstar. Christine Ebersole performs As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard. Elena Roger, the London star of Evita, headlines a production number of Buenos Aires. Josh Groban sings Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera. Brightman and Betty Buckley join for a duet on Lloyd Webber's signature song, Memory, from Cats.

After the Parton segment, Liam Neeson begins the Spielberg salute by recalling the director's work on Schindler's List. "He pushed us hard with an urgency to make his vision a reality," Neeson says. Tom Hanks honors his director on Saving Private Ryan by introducing several World War II veterans, who offer their own tributes.

For the big finale, the special pulls out Leonard Bernstein's Make Our Garden Grow from Candide. Conductor John Williams, Spielberg's collaborator for 34 years, leads that mammoth performance.

So what if Simpson flubbed her moment in the spotlight? Her mistake pales when the Kennedy Center special promises so much that is bold and beautiful.

Dolly's tribute was the nicest, along with Smokey Robinson's tribute. (Dolly's tribute would've been better if CBS hadn't cut it in half with a commercial break. )

I know I am biased, but I think Shania was great! :)

You can judge for yourself.

For those on the West Coast: Shania came on at about 10:15/10:20 pm.

That would be about 1 hour and 15/20 minutes after the show started.

Shania came on right after Alison Krauss performed "Jolene."

Vince Gill came on after Shania and was the final performance of the Dolly tribute.

When Vince was done, all of the participants of the Dolly tribute - including Shania - came back out on stage and gave Dolly a standing ovation.

Everyone sounded great. I think this was a very fitting tribute to Dolly. And I agree that Jessica was not missed. The Nashville folk represented tonight!!!!

Shania was lovely, her voice was superb, and she and Alison gave a stellar performance!!!

I just want to say what a joy the whole program was. I'm afraid I find most awards shows to be extravaganzas of immaturity and bad taste. But this affair was what award shows should be. All the honorees are artistic geniuses. All but one of them achieved success in the musical field. The performers who interpreted them did so with dignity and excellence. What more could one ask for?

Well, you're certainly entitled to be biased on these ST mb's, especially when you do so with such tactfulness.

As a non fan, I'm possibly less biased than average here. But I agree with your assessment of Shania. Details below.

Shania and Alison were incredible together! Vince Gill was much better than I expected!! Can't say I missed Jessica.

I liked Shania and Allison too, as described in detail below. My expectations of Vince Gill had been elevated by some article or posts I'd read. They said that his performance was tops for wowing hearts, or at least Dolly's heart, and during the portion for tributes to Dolly.

I was a bit surprised by Shania's voice. It sounds like it's healed a lot since near the end of the tour.

Extravaganzas of immaturity and bad taste? I'm sure those can be found. In fact that may even be a representative sample. I've certainly rarely been completely satisfied with the dozen or so award shows I've seen in the last 10-15 years. I tend to agree, that this show was enjoyable, impressive, educational, inspiring, enriching and healing. But it was not as good as it could have been, in my opinion. Your exposure to culture and the arts is far more extensive than mine. So your comparison points may be more valid. However I have my own opinions, even if they're not quite as strong as yours.

Here is my review of the show:

I like Smokey Robinson a lot, or at least his music. I don't know the man's character or his personal background much. But what I know, I like. I was somewhat disappointed in the performances of some of his songs. Old preformers, well past their prime, are great for introductions and emceeing, but they should leave it to the current top performers to perform the songs. Smokey's songs were such a pleasure for those of us who were young when he was in his prime. We want his songs to be performed at their absolute best, in an award/honoree event like this, to help the later generations understand how good he was.

Zubin Mehta. My ears perked up when I saw he was Indian. My best friend and golfing partner is of similar origins. Didn't know Zubin had so many accomplishements. Enjoyed hearing about it.

Dolly Parton. I admire and respect her inspiring role of breaking through the glass ceiling for women in country music. She has managed to do that with surprising diplomacy and minimal carnage. And she's an outstanding song writer and unique performer. Although she's had some of the top songs, I've never felt that she had quite the top female voice, at any time during her career.

I like Allison Krauss quite a lot, but thought her performance with her sister and one other backup lady singer, wasn't quite up to the standards of her stunning performance a few years ago, in "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

I am not a Shania Twain fan. But I thought her voice and delivery were beautiful and virtually flawless. The best singing I can remember of vocal songs, the whole night. I did note, however, that she sang in a slightly lower and more comfortable key, than what Dolly originally used for that song, if I remember right. If true, this means Shania's voice is healed or at least healthier since the end of her last tour. However, it may mean she'll no longer be able to hit the high notes, night after night on any future tours, or even in just occasional performances.

The camera angle on Shania, with Allison harmonizing off to the right, was very nice. I noticed Allison was singing higher than Shania. But Allison's harmonizing during Shania's Special TV show, (Up Close And Personal (?))was best when she was lower in pitch than Shania.

Vince Gill did a fine job on I Will Always Love You. But he did a lot of extra variations on many notes, kind of his own interpretation. I liked the original version of the song better. They showed a clip of Dolly doing it.

Though it was pleasant, I did not care as much for Carrie Underwood and Kenny Rogers doing Islands In the Stream. Kenny and Dolly did it a lot better when the song hit the top years ago. I didn't know it til now, that Kenny is well past his vocal prime. Carrie sang fairly well alone, but had the mike in front of her face too much, and was flipping her fingers up in a nervous and distracting twitch too often. Her harmoninzing with Kenny was fair at best, compared to what other experienced harmonizers can do. Dolly handled that part a lot better when she did it with Kenny in the past. I don't know if they rewrote the notes for her in a lower key or something, or if she just hasn't developed the harmizing role as well as she has developed the lead voice role. In the TV competition Celebrity Duets, there was one guy, Randy Travis who has a terrific voice, who admitted frankly, he cannot harmize hardly at all.

I liked Reba's introduction of the Dolly portion of show. I think she did a fine job. Was happy that she was chosen for this prominent role.

Andrew Lloyd Webber. I had no clue who he was. As a person who grew up more with cows than with people, I've never developed the fancy tastes to indulge in Broadway shows, even though I enjoy seeing or hearing them a bit on TV, etc. However I've heard of nearly all the shows they referred to, and I was very impressed with his amazing list. Also surprised to see Sarah Brightman there and introducing him. I thought she did fairly well. Too bad they again let some older performer past her prime do the main performance. Sarah had a better voice, even if she may not have been in these type of Broadway shows.

Steven Spielberg presenters did very well. I thought the Jewish aspect may have been exalted a bit much. But I admire tremendously, Steven's humanity, courage, and educational entertainment.

I just wanna make sure Shania's voice is back to normal (like the beginning of the Up tour)

Please reassure me that her voice is back to normal and even better
