View Full Version : Genre of Shania's Next Album?

What genre of music do you think Shania's album will be closer to? More pop? More country? Or the same as the Up! album and both? Also, what genre do you want it to be?
I really think her next album will be more country, and probably have a similar feel to TWIM. Her most recent singles like Shoes, IANQ and Don't! have all had a really country feel to it, and I think that's more the direction she's moving towards. Another reason I think that is because at this point she's probably a bit too different from mainstream pop to fit into the market today. Even the more pop-ish songs on the mainstream charts have a sort of R&B style to it. I also think that contemporary country today is very similar to Shania's older material so she'd fit in really well. I love Shania's more pop songs, but I'd really like to see some country songs too. I really hope there's some up beat honky-tonk type songs like IANQ on this album .

Anything Shania does will be great, but I would actually love it a little less slick than it has been. Something a little more rootsy and raw would be great. I wish she'd channel Kris Kristofferson and make something edgy while remaining mildy traditional... if that's possible! lol
I long for her to do something along the lines of "Help Me Make It Through The Night." She would sound amazing on that. That style, like she did on "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain," etc.

I can easily see this message board lacks strong country music admirers and seeing that it is mainly international fans, they would prefer the pop, bubblegum, dance, rock or what have you over something as life and emotion found in country music like no other genre can deliver. Shania can still do all the fun stuff, but I would enjoy hearing some raw material, some tender, some edgy.

I would love to see her do a rootsy album but not for that reason. I like that she's always sort of done her own thing in spite of what everyone had said about her. The country music industry is so corrupt, if I didn't love the music and artists in this genre I would boycott it. As for proving her capabilities as a country star - I'd say she has definitely done that. She is constantly refered to as "the queen of country music" or "the country superstar..." so I don't think that's an issue. :p

Actually I agree with that. I'm glad Shania doesn't cater to critics and powers of Nashville and does her own thing. There's just this deep emotion locked up inside me that would like to see or hear this side of Shania and in the same fold it would naturally unfold to prove her knowledge this way. For her and the fans and not to make a naysayer happy. Get what I mean?
The genre is very corrupt from an executive and business standpoint, but I enjoy the sounds and many of the artists who don't play the game. New country is awful compared to old country and this is my opinion as well that new pop and new rock is worse than old, but also worse than new country. Good music is so hard to find today at least in the mainstream.
I would call Shania the queen of country from a modern standpoint, but she continues to evolve more and more pop and less country. Plus many traditionalists and purists would love to argue she is not worthy of being called a country artist as they would first hang her on the highest tree before praising any of her work, but that's nonsense and going to extreme lengths to cut her down. She is very capable of joining some of the finest names in country music history, maybe not so much in the present, but her early days are very rooted. Either way, I'll support her direction and it will be interesting to see what the future holds.

I love new country actually, and prefer it to old country. That might have a bit to do with my age though...old country is a bit too old-fashioned and slow for me. It could be the age factor, but by no means am I anywhere near an old geezer. :funny: I might be only a few years older than you, but when I hear most new mainstream country it sounds nothing more then regurgitated old pop and rock music with some fiddles and steel guitar thrown in. Most rap now days is crap & often has bad meanings & leads to bad behaver but when early rap arrived there was quite alot of fun raps songs, Run-D.M.C. spring to mind, they seemed to have fun, the only modern rap I think is any good is Eminem, he can be very funny & makes great videos, I love the video he does where he is dressed up as Michael Jackson & a girl in a red mini skirt farts.

I think a lot of that "funny" in Eminem's music is just as trashy as a lot of the modern rap. I don't care for all the degrading and vulgar lyrics, messages, and images in that genre of music. I will agree Run DMC and much of the rap from 15 years ago and older had decency and worth expressing messages. Where is that original intent today?

Shania’s next album should be going in a new direction, she needs to retain what she does best, Country but at the same time keep up with upbeat songs with a good rocking sound, we don’t need an Up part two, Up was a great album but I feel that it can’t be the right direction to go for Shania’s long term career, Shania will be 43 next year and if as we are all led to believe her forthcoming album won’t be released sooner than October 2008, more like late November, although I always favour April to May releases , many people I know agree with me on that point because they like a record for the summer, so this means Shania should release any singles for late feb or march, Now days single don’t sell that much, in the UK we no longer have Top of the Pops “no great loss there” most of it was crap anyway, there are other TV in the UK showing pop videos, I must admit my music research and listening is done on the radio or online. I have converted quite a lot of people to listen to Shania music, but the one album I have found not to play is the red Up album and most defiantly not the blue UP album, but the green Up album is the one that does the trick and then play them the Woman in Me album and then they end up being Shania fans, also the Platinum Collection DVD is a good buy.
There is one thing that would be a very bad idea and that is to bring up her struggles as a child, in truth it won’t wash with most of the record buying public, why you may ask, because we already know about her childhood, she is not the only one who's had a tuff childhood, I did as well, so what, Music should be an escape from all the crap we have to put up with and it should rock and be a lot of fun, OK I have a Woody Guthrie album, but when he recorded that music he was dirt poor, so there was some meaning to it, Shania on the other hand is a rich Superstar now and quite rightly so.
The most important thing for Shania is to release the same version of her next album worldwide, there will be lots of remixes of her album by others who do that for a living and will end up doing a hell of a lot better job than the blue Up album, there are some very good Shania remixes out there on You Tube.
There is one thing I'd like to see that her previous albums have all had... a release date. :p
That works

A lot of very good points, and I agree with you. I wouldn't want to see another Up! either. I can't see Shania bringing up her childhood in any songs though, she's even said that she wouldn't do it because it would be too hard for her. It's true that actual singles don't sell as well, but a lot of people buy the single from iTunes and stuff so in that sense it does sort of sell. I prefer spring releases for albums as well because I don't have a lot of time to listen/enjoy and album during the school year. I keep hoping she's pshyicing everyone out and is actually going to release it earlier than she says but I doubt that's going to happen.

haha I agree with you on that!
That stupid "Crank that Soulja Boy" song omg, it pisses me off so much. The same group/person/whatever, came out with a new song called "Crank that Spiderman". IT'S THE EXACT SAME SONG! The only difference is they say "we don't superman no more, now spiderman that h**". Instead of "Watch me crank dat soulja boy then super man that h**". Seriously!?...& people actually like their new song like it's something compeltely new and innovative.

Yeah I don't have a clue where to go with that stuff. Some of the songs I've overheard really makes me wonder about mankind and the youth most especially.
I think we got a few smart youngsters around here. :D
