Just one word.......Beautiful.
Thnx Rita!!
Well, the first thing I pay attention to is not Shania but Anne. This is probably my favourite Anne song and I know it so well that every note and inflection is part of me. So I compare the 62 year old Anne's rendition with the younger Anne's rendition. This version is probably a tad slower than the original, which is something because the original was already very slow. Anne's voice is still excellent but to my ear not quite what it was. Her voice seems even lower than before. There is a slight edge to it now and her vibrato is slower than before. Still and all, a beautiful song, still rendered perfectly.
As for Shania, my main concern was whether she has got over the hoarseness she suffered as a result of her last tour. Happily, she has. She sounds pretty well as she did before. Her mid range is still nasal, her higher notes still pure. So I can relax now.
On the whole, I prefer Anne's voice for this song. Okay, this may well be because this is the voice I have always heard do it. I would probably feel the same way if someone other than Shania were to sing one of her songs. I would probably still prefer the original Shania version. But I like the strength and depth of Anne's voice. It somehow carries this super slow song better.

Thanks so much Rita!! That's our Shania! She sounds really good to me on this. Anne's site did a great job with this. I decided to start the songs playing. I ran through most of them. Since I have always been a good fan of Anne's, all of her songs are pretty much very familiar to me and I like most of them. "You Needed Me" is the perfect choice for Shania. There is no doubt for me on that. However, I also think she could have done "Could I Have This Dance" well too. Amy Grant really doesn't have enough power for me on it, her voice is somewhat soft, but I am glad that Shania got YNM.
It is so good to hear Shania again and to hear her sounding more like herself again as she was before the last UP tour. Her high notes sound good. Her lower ones a little more edgy, but fine. That said, overall she sounds great! Now let's hope that new CD is getting closer.;)

I am listening to album though right now.. listened to track no 10 first since as a European the rest of them singers are only vaguely familiar ;)!!
You Needed Me was a great performance IMO. It is rather difficut to sing a song that slow - even when there are two singers to take breaths by turn - maybe she took advantange to the fact that she did with Shania who has quite excellent technic for slow songs.
As a whole this is not bad album. Maybe these songs are a little too alike to my taste, but as a whole the album is done with great taste and grace.

Your comment that the songs are too alike is interesting. I find I usually have the same reaction when listening to an album for the first time. When I first heard the Dixie Chicks' latest album, they all seemed good but in a way similar. But as I listened again and again I began to see large differences and enormous depth. Just yesterday I listened to the Eagles latest album. The songs on disk one seemed somewhat alike and the songs on disk two seemed slightly different from disk one but not unlike each other. I bet I will find the same thing with the Eagles that I did with the Chicks - great depth with lots of rewards for listening again and again. Maybe I am not as musical as some other people but I have to hear a tune a few times before it resonates with me. Those songs on Anne's latest album are big hits from the past. Do listen a time or two more and they may grow on you.
Anne by the way is a pleasure to see interviewed. I have seen several now that her new album is coming out. She is so down to earth, unpretentious with a lot of wisdom that comes with the years and above all, there is a calmness to her demeanor. The latter probably comes from being a supremely self confident person to begin with plus of course the benefit of a lifetime of successes.
BTW Anne is said to be the best celebrity golfer in the world. She shot at 79 the other week.

I listened the whole thing two more times and it sort grows on you, but is not my cup pf tea I am afraid. And you are right about Anne's voice; I would be less polite than you (as always) and say that it is starting to sound "old" - her earlier recordings are better IMO.
But You Needed Me and Nobody Loves Me Like You Do make me cry every time, nevertheless... ;)...
As to her interviews. Yes she seems to be what the Canadians represent to me as at their best. Self-confident but down-to-earth, proud but humble, opinionated but nice, etc.
The album in all is pretty cool... And you're right about Anne's voice. But "You Needed Me" is clearly the best duet of the album, not just it's Shania but because the song is amazing and very well done and suits Shania's voice very well

Shania's voice has definitely changed over the years. Some will say for the better, some not so much. I too am just thrilled her hoarseness from the UP Tour is behind her. She sounded improved last year singing "Coat Of Many Colors" and now this rendition with Anne solidifies it, her fine voice is coming home. :)
Can't wait for the new Shania album, this is such a tease for good things to come. At least its something; and it is good. Great job Shania and Anne.

Yes she seems to be what the Canadians represent to me as at their best. Self-confident but down-to-earth, proud but humble, opinionated but nice, etc.
No truer words have ever been typed. Je t'aime Canada.
The album went on sale today. I have been listening to it. I am struck again by how slow these songs are in comparison with the originals. Still and all, a beautiful collection of songs.
Now, I know the idea was to have all female duets. That is fine by me. I tend to prefer women's voices for singing (although I prefer men's voices for announcing). Male-female interaction is the essence of the human condition. Men's and women's characteristics tend to form a complementarity in relationships and their voices complement each other in duets in my opinion. So it would have been nice to have one or two duets involving men.
In the little booklet that comes with the album, each song has a little blurb. Here is what the blurb about the Anne-Shania duet says:
""I am so proud of Shania. Here is a woman who believed in herself, didn't let the industry dictate who she was, the music she recorded, the clothes that she wore or the country she lived in. She sings great and I love the sound of her voice." - Anne
The best selling recording of her career, "You Needed Me" was responsible for Anne's first Grammy as a pop artist in 1978 for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Female. It reached #1 on Billboard's pop chart and #4 on Billboard's country chart. Written by Randy Goodrum, it is to this day Anne's favourite of the more than 300 songs that she has recorded.
When asked to sing on this project Shania replied to Anne by email. "I'm honoured that you asked me to do this. You have been admired by me and everyone I know my whole life." This was the song that Shania picked. The results are as phenomenal as the success of the two women themselves. (Shania Twain appears courtesy of Mercury Records)"

Thanks for posting, that's awesome.
I am Shania's friend on Myspace... although I don't really like that site, it's kind of annoying! I prefer Facebook (www.facebook.com)

I use Facebook. MySpace is way too confusing for me.
