Flower of Scotland
O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
0 Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
Is that the castle where they filmed Highlander?

Is that the bridge that they are forever painting? They start painting at one end and when they finally reach the other end it's time to begin repainting at the other end again
faithfully
02-16-2008, 8:37pm
The coating system employed for the steelwork requires blast cleaning to bare metal; an application of zinc based primer to prevent corrosion (35 microns); a glass flake epoxy intermediate coat providing a barrier (400 microns); and, a polyurethane gloss top coat to give an attractive “Forth Bridge Red” finish (35 microns) on all of its estimated 400,000m². This system which has been tried and tested in an offshore environment is designed to give a 20*year life which means the bridge may be free of its legendary painters after 2009 for a short while!:)

The Battle of Bannockburn
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb286/tanktopshania/bannockburn-battlefield.jpg
June 23-24, 1314
Bannockburn, Stirlingshire
Scots under Robert Bruce vs. English under King Edward II
Robert the Bruce had rebelled against the English and was attempting to forge an independant Scotland. He besieged Stirling and extracted a promise of submission if the castle was not relieved by a set time. Edward II hurriedly marched north from England to counter the insurgence and reach Stirling in time. They met at Bannockburn, on the approaches to Stirling.
The Battle
The Scottish force was composed largely of infantry, with few archers and little cavalry. Bruce placed his men between two stretches of uneven and boggy ground, so the English had to attack against a narrow front. This negated the English superiority in numbers, which has been estimated at three to one.
Bruce's tactics worked to perfection. The English cavalry hurled charge after charge against the massed spears of the Scottish front, to little effect. The Scottish cause was aided when a large group of their camp-followers was mistaken by the English for fresh Scottish troops, and the English army broke ranks and fled.
The flight of the English troops was hampered by the boggy ground, and many were cut down by the pursuing Scots. The lack of Scottish cavalry limited pursuit, however.
Results
Bannockburn was the decisive blow in establishing the independence of Scotland from England. Although the English refused to recognise the fact until the treaty of Northampton 14 years later, Bannockburn set the seal on Scotland's bid for freedom. Robert the Bruce is rightly remembered as a national hero for his role in ridding Scotland of the English yoke, at least for a time.

In 1296, William Wallace and his small band of men ambushed and defeated the English under the command of Sir John Fenwick.

ROBERT BURNS
Failford Monument
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb286/tanktopshania/scotland/Failford_Monument_Ayrshire_Robert_B.jpg
In 1786, Robert Burns and his sweetheart 'Highland' Mary Campbell parted for the last time at a spot near where the Water of Fail flows into the River Ayr at the small hamlet of Failford. Burns had plans to emigrate to Jamaica whilst Mary returned home to Greenock where she died later that year.
A small pathway leads the visitor to a monument built from local red sandstone which marks this spot.
It was erected by the Burns Federation in 1921 and the Greenock shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff met the cost.

Legend says that Wallace's sword was so large and heavy that very few could handle it;) especially the English:p
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2f/Wallace_sword.jpg
The Wallace Sword is an ancient claymore type of sword purported to have belonged to William Wallace (1270 – 1305),
a knight and Scottish patriot who led a resistance to the English occupation of Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
It is said to have been used by William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 and the Battle of Falkirk (1298).
Today William Wallace's sword can be viewed at the Wallace Monument near Stirling in Scotland.
The blade of the sword measures 4 feet and 11.5 inches in length and including the handle 5 feet and 4 inches.
The breadth of the blade varies from 2.25 inches at the guard to 0.75 inches before the point. The sword weighs six pounds.
It has been estimated that to be able to wield the sword Sir William Wallace must have been more than six feet six inches tall.

Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955)
Born at Lochfield Farm near Darvel, in Ayrshire, Fleming moved to London when he was 13, after the death of his father. He worked as a shipping clerk for five years and then became a medical student at St Mary's in Paddington, part of London University. He was a brilliant student and after graduation he joined the bacteriology lab at St Mary's, under Almroth Wright.
During the First World War, Fleming saw at first hand the failure of current antiseptics to treat infected wounds and after the war he returned to St Mary's to find a solution to the problem. Initially, he developed the use of antityphoid vaccines and discovered lysozyme which had some limited use as a food preservative.
In 1928 he discovered that a culture of staphylococcus bacteria had been accidentally infected by an airborne mould which had destroyed the bacteria. This was to transform the treatment of infected wounds with penicillin. The difficulties of developing the fragile substance commercially meant that it took 15 years before it could be produced in large quantities but two Oxford biochemists Howard Florey and Ernst Chan succeeded. Initial supplies were used exclusively by the armed forces and undoubtedly saved thousands of lives. Fleming was knighted in 1944 and Fleming, Florey and Chan received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1945.
Fleming did not patent penicillin, hoping that this would help to develop the product as a cheap and effective drug.

The plague was paid for and donated by the Robert Burns World Federation Limited
On it reads the words: Dedicated to the victims of terrorism in the USA on September 11th 2001
At the bottom of the plague is a quote taken from Robert Burns himself:
"Mans inhumanity to man
Makes countless thousands mourn!"
Robert Burns signature is at the far bottom right along with the date 1759 - 1796;)

The Tall ship's real name is the Glenlee
The Glenlee was built at the Bay Yard in Port Glasgow and was one of a group of 10 steel sailing vessels built to a standard design for the Glasgow shipping firm of Archibald Sterling and Co. Ltd.
She is a three masted barque, with length 245 feet, beam 37.5 feet and depth 22.5 feet.
The Glenlee first took to the water as a bulk cargo carrier in 1896. She circumnavigated the globe four times and survived (though not without incident) passing through the fearsome storms of Cape Horn 15 times before being bought by the Spanish navy in 1922 and being turned into a sail training vessel.
The ship was modified and served in that role until 1969. She then operated as a training school until 1981 when she was laid up in Seville Harbour and largely forgotten.
Discovery
A British naval architect saw her in 1990 and two years later, the Clyde Maritime Trust succeeded in buying the re-named Galatea at auction and saved her from the scrapyard.
Restoration
The Glenlee is one of only 5 Clydebuilt sailing ships that remain afloat in the world and was restored over a six year period by the Clyde Maritime Trust’s paid and voluntary crew.
An announcement in November 1999 saw the Glenlee recognised as part of the Core Collection of historic vessels in the UK. Chosen from a list of over 1,500, the Glenlee is one of only 43 vessels recognised by the National Historic Ships Committee as being of pre-eminent national significance in terms of maritime heritage, historic associations or technological innovation.
Funding
The restoration of the Glenlee was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund, Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow and many private benefactors.
Other Clydebuilt ships
The other four Clydebuilt sailing ships afloat in the world are also visitor attractions: Balclutha (San Franciso), Moshulu (Philadelphia), Falls of the Clyde (Hawaii) and the Pommern (Finland).

I don't know but i find the sound of the bagpipe kinda sad:(
Sad?:hmmm:well the sound does have a connection to you;) It hits everyone in different ways. Did you know many many years ago that the English outlawed their use on the battlefield because of their effect on the Scots in battle:funny: They are also regulated for noise pollution:uhh: thanks to some silly European Union health and safety laws.:mad:Its not as if they play them in your street while you try to sleep :smirk:
When bagpipes songs were outlawed by the English in the William Wallace era, the Scots kept playing them, the more they were outlawed they more they played them. If the English couldn't stop them, E.U. won't either and they don't know how stubborn us angry Scot's can be:p
Now we retaliated by giving you Steps. :biglaugh:
Theres a Queen song, "Gimme The Prize" from Highlander where Brian May makes his guitar sound like bagpipes. Its good too.

She loves Queen Paul :funny::p she still misses our Freddie:(
I guess she likes Princes of the Universe. Its the most under rated song ever, its as good as Bohemian Rhapsody...maybe. :p Wasn't even released as a single. :(
The concerts have a couple of Freddie moments, it brings tears to the eyes. I was stood 3rd row in front of Brian and Roger yesterday, it was surreal. To think Freddie could have been there too, I'm so sad I never saw him live.
