This was a year our group didn't backpack. We did the LONG day hike to Half Dome. This was the summer of 2006. Sorry these pictures will be out of sequence.

This time I have them in order. The first 4 pics are all taken from Washburn Point. If you ever get to go to Yosemite most people will tell you to go up to Glacier Point for the view. But Washburn Point which is nearby before you get to Glacier Point also offers some great views and is often overlooked.
1st photo - Half Dome 2 - Half Dome, Nevada and Vernal Falls. Nevada is the higher of the two. 3 - Nevada & Vernal Falls (bottom 3)11335
Vernal Falls on top.

In the backcountry it can be very quiet. Sometimes though it gets a little scary with thunderstorms. Years back a group of hikers up the trail from us were struck by lightning. Luckily though the one hit the worst looked fine. But I won't get scared if I hear thunder this year. I'll just think that maybe Stevie is somewhere in the canyon. :funny:

Yes I know that I am and those that travel with me. This year are feet paid the price with mean-looking blisters amongst the three of us that backpacked this year. But mine aren't painful.
This last photo from the top of Half Dome is looking west into Yosemite Valley. Unfortunately my body was out of wack that day and I didn't continue closer towards the western edge of the massive rock called Half Dome.

Granite.
This last photo of the 2006 trip was taken from Sentinel Bridge. I have seen some of the most beautiful photographs of Half Dome taken from this spot. I was unlucky to not have a cloud in the sky. You might have to look to the side of your computer at the screen to see Half Dome.

Our 2008 trip started on the same trailhead from Glacier Point. After 2 miles our trail headed southeast while the trail to Half Dome headed Northeast but mostly north. This time we would only be hiking for 4 miles on the first day but I was carrying a 60 pound back for the 6 day trek. This first photo is a view of Half Dome from the south.

We followed Illilouette Creek to our first campsite located the required four miles from Glacier Point. I took this photo of the creek because of the shapes of the rocks caused by swift Spring runoff over hundreds of years.

I mentioned to my fellow packers that the second day would be the hardest. Our packs would be nearly full of food and the hike would be close to eight miles. Not far from our camp we came upon these slabs of granite that broke off from a dome hundreds of years ago.

Originally the plan was to do a loop of about 48 - 52 miles. At this point we were only at about 12 miles done. That would leave us with more than 12 miles a day though most would be downhill after another long difficult day. We decided that it would be best to explore in detail the area around us. We would visit Lower Merced Pass Lake about a half an hour away and the Outtaway Lakes, 3 1/2 miles to the closest one. To be continued..........
The view looking back towards where we started urged me on. From this view you can see the back of Half Dome and the granite rock you must go over before you reach the saddle.

With our base camp established we began the next morning by exploring our neighbor lake "Lower Merced Pass Lake." We walked around the north and west side of the lake. Then we climbed up to the 9000 foot level at the southern part of the lake for an adventurous grand view. The white rocks you see above the lake in this photo is where we go in later photos you will see.

:]Great stuff my friend, I bet your legs are super fit like mine;)
I do have very strong legs. My legs never felt tired the entire trip but my shoulders, ankle and feet were sore. I also got headaches every now and then which I never experienced before while hiking up there. Do you ride a bike a lot, run and work out at the gym or a combination of the three. How about swimming? Thank you Stevie for enjoying the pics.

George I have just looked at all of your beautiful photos of Yosemite National Park. What a wonderful place! All the time that I was looking at them I was wondering why I have not been there. I am going to have to make that trip soon. I was fascinated by how stunningly beautiful the photo in post #89 is.
Wonderful, wonderful photos George.:)
Well if you go let me know and depending on what you like, your fitness, I'll give you my advice because the park is huge and time is limited. Thank you for enjoying the photos. Funny how we all have our favorite photos. From my backbacking photos my favorites are post # 52 and # 79. Although in person the three of us thought that Lower Ottoway Lake was the prettiest.

George I have to comment on your favorite photos. The word that came to mind when I went back and looked at #52 was majestic and awe inspiring. Half-dome with a backdrop of snowy white clouds, how beautiful. Isn't it funny how we see things but sometimes don't see things until directed to look again. I also found #53 fascinating. I wonder how many years it took for those shapes in the rock to emerge. When I first saw #79 the long vertical cloud in the middle caught my eye, it resembles a tornado on it's last legs or a bolt of lightning to me. But that just me seeing things that aren't really there, but it's fun to do. I have a question about the rocks to the right of the
lake. Are they considered shale? They look to be easily broken. I would not like to try walking on that stuff. Well I have rattled on enough George. I really like your photos they are spectacular.

Renee, The white vertical cloud may have been from a jet passing over but I don't remember for sure. I am not much on Geology but my guess is that rock may indeed be shale because the white rock we walked on was very brittle and we had to be very careful as we walked. Thanks for your kind words.

More in-gym training;) I used to walk loads and I mean at least 8 hours of solid paced walking a day in all weathers:]

That's a lot of walking and not getting paid for it (Don't forget I used to be a mailman).

Apologies for not replying to your last post to me. Again I want to say how much I enjoy your photos of Yosemite. How many boxes of honey can you carry George? Do bears actually have mailboxes or do you just set the honey down outside a bear cave and run like the dickens? :funny: Happy photographing.

George, I know that the mailman's code says that the mail will be delivered under any circumstances and anywhere, but you have gone way beyond the call of duty here! Such dedication, such bravery!:D

This is a photo of a photo I have in my living room. I guess it must be at least 5 years since I went there. This is in the Northeast part of Yosemite, the Tuolumne Meadows area. It is probably the most favorable area to backpack in Yosemite. This photo is of the Tuolumne River which is where San Francisco gets its water. It's on the trail to Glen Aulin High Sierra camp which I have been to maybe 4 times over the years.

Again this is also from a photo as will the one after this. The trail to Glen Aulin is a part of the Pacific Crest Trail which goes from the border of Mexico to the border of Canada. This photo is past the junction and instead of heading north towards Canada this trail continues to follow the Tuolumne River downstream. It's between Glen Aulin and Waterwheel Falls. I wish I had video of Waterwheel Falls, it's pretty cool to see the water flick in a circular waterwheel motion.

It''s about a six mile hike to Glen Aulin and relatively easy as it's mostly downhill. This photo is of Lower McCabe Lake. If you were headed north on the Pacific Trail this could very well be one of your stops. It's about a day's hike north from Glen Aulin and a difficult one at that. Almost entirely uphill, never seeming to end. This picture was taken at sunset so the orange ridge you see is actually white. Looking at the peaks is the area that has Bighorn Sheep.

That's all for now. Hopefully I'll find some more photos I can take pictures of even though they don't come out as well.
