SHANIA & MUTT
A Real Love Story

Shania looked down at the small scrap of paper Luke Lewis had given her during their meeting at Mercury Records earlier that day. It was just a small slip of white paper with a phone number written Luke's lacy hand. She remembered their meeting. She was sitting in the leather chair across from Luke as he ended a phone conference with another executive. When he finished he took the small piece of paper from his jacket pocket and reached across to hand it to her.
"What's this," she laughed looking it over.
"That is the number of a man who really would like to make your acquaintance Leeny."
She rolled her eye and smiled," Now Luke, remember how I asked you not to set me up on anymore blind dates with your friends?"
"No this isn't one of my college pals! This is Mutt Lange's number."
Mutt Lange again? Hadn't she sent him an autograph already? When one heard a name like Mutt, you never forgot it.
"Oh yes, Mary gave me an autograph packet to sign so she could send it to him. Who is he anyway?"
Luke stared back at the fresh faced brunette with a look of disbelief. "Who is Mutt Lange?"
"Yeah, I've never heard of him."
Luke leaned his head back and laughed,"Oh Leeny! Have you heard of "Back In Black"?
Shania nodded.
"Hyesteria by Def Leppard?"
Shania nodded.
"Everything I Do, I Do It For You' by Bryan Adams?"
Shania nodded.
"Well then you've heard of Mutt Lange."
Shania left Luke's office that morning with the promise that she would at least give the mysterious Mr. Lange one call. As she drove back to her apartment, she began to think about the situation at hand. Did she really want to call some stranger out of the blue? What did he want from her? She didn't know if she wanted an answer to that.

Shania took a deep breath and picked up the phone to dial the number.
A few moments later, the phone rang. On the second ring someone picked up.
A drowsy, British, "Hello", came over the line.
What time was it over there anyway?
"Um..is Mutt Lange in," Shania muttered. She felt embarassed waking this man up.
"Huhm....speaking."
"Oh....hey...Mutt..this is Shania Twain."
There was silence and then a warm laugh,"Hullo Shania. So, you have finally decided to give me a ring......"

The sound of Mutt's voice and his laugh made Shania smile.
"I hope I didn't wake you."
"Well you did," he hissed playfully into the phone.
"Oh my God, I'm sorry. I can call back another time...."
"No way," he cut in. "I have been waiting for your call for quite some time. I just got your autograph packet in. So thanks."
"You're welcome," Shania laughed.
"And for future reference 'Mutt' has two T's not one," he said matter-of-factly.
Shania fell back onto her couch, squirming in embarassment. First she wakes him up from a sound sleep and then she mispells his name!
"I feel so silly Mutt..may I call you Mutt?"
"I was hoping you would. Anything but 'Mr. Lange', too formal."
Shania felt her embarassment ease."Well then Mutt it is."
For a moment or two, neither the young country songstress or her seasoned admirerer knew what to say. It was Mutt who spoke first.
"So, how are you enjoying living amongst the good old boys in Nashville?"
There was a hint of scarcasm in his voice. Shania picked up on it right away. The way things were going with her career she needed an ally.
"I hate it," she admitted.
Mutt raised his blonde brows at her frank admission. "Well, no one can accuse you of not being honest."
"Well, I'm not Nashville," Shania reminded him.
Mutt reached over to his bedside table where he kept his mail. He took Shania's autograph and admired the glossy photo of her wrapped up in a fur trimmed parka. "No, indeed you aren't Nashville."
"I feel like such an outsider her. They all treat me like I'm stupid. And maybe I am! But, I want to do my music, my way. Luke has tried to help me out, but there is only so much he can do. I don't know Mutt....I am begining to think that coming here was a waste of time."
Suddenly she felt embarassed. There she was pouring out her heart and all her dissapointments to a man she had never even set eyes on
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't be rambling on like this. Especially since you don't know me," she apologized.
"Not at all Shania. From what Luke Lewis tells me, you have every right to be frustrated."
"Well Luke and my manager Mary are the only people in this town that seem to care about me."
"Shania, let me ask you something. Do you write any material of your own."
Shania caught her breath. He was the first person to ask her that since she set foot in Nashville. "Yeah, I do!"
"Well I would love to hear some of your material.Do you have any demos or tapes you could send to me?"
She looked over at her guitar case and smiled," I can do better than that. Hold on a second Mutt."
She sat the phone down and ran over to her guitar case. After she took her old acoustic out she ran back over to the couch and set the phone on top of a pillow.She took a deep breath and began to strum her guitar softly as she sang

From the phone she heard Mutt's call out to her. She leaned her ear against the phone,"How was that.........

Shania heard silence on the other end of the phone. Then, "Shania that was good, it could use some polishing up." Mutt said

Shania exhaled, not realizing she was holding her breath. "You, you liked it?" Shania managed to say.

"That was good Shania, do you have that on tape? Mutt asked.

"Yes, but it doesn't sound that good. I recorded it on the tour bus." Shania replied.

"Listen, I loved your video, I am a big fan of country music. I want to produce a country act, and you caught my attention."

Shania smiled. Mutt continued "I am going to fanfair next month, and I really want to talk to you about producing your next album, you have real potential."

Shania answered "Sure, we can meet at the Mercury booth. I will make sure there are passes waiting for you. Are you bring anyone with you?

Mutt answered "My buddy Bryan is comming with me. So could you have two passes?"

"Sure, that won't be a problem" Shania said, she was starting to get excited.

"How is your first album selling?" Mutt inquired

"It's selling okay. But, Mercury may not pick me up for a second album." Shania said, sounding a little disappointed.

"Listen, you don't worry about that. We will talk about that when I see you." Mutt said reassuring her.

"Can you send me some of the songs you are writing?" Mutt asked

Shania looked at her black ledger, where she kept all her songs. "I can photocopy them, and Fedex them to you, if that's ok?

"Sure, your manager should have my address". Mutt continued. "Oh, Shania, can I call you tomorrow, I want to hear more of your songs?"

Shania was starting to get excited again, someone finally believed in her and her music, all from a phone call. "Sure, I would love to talk with you again." Shania finally said.

"Well take care, and have a good night, Shania." Mutt said.

"Goodnight, sorry for getting you up" Shania said apologetically.

"No problem, until tomorrow then." Mutt said, and hung up the phone.

Shania hung up the phone, then picked it up again. She dialed her sister's number.

"Hello, Carrie speaking."

"Carrie, it's Eilleen. You'll never guess what happened. Ever hear of "Mutt Lange?"

Shania eagerly awaited the next day. That night, she could barely sleep. Once she finally did, she was awakened by the phone. She stumbled across the room and picked up the phone. "hullo?" a much more awake, bright sounding mutt sounded over the phone..."hey shania...did i wake u?" shania burst out laughing...

You have given me hope that I will be able to make it. No one has had as much faith in me as you have. And you barely even know me." said Shania. "Well I do believe you can make it. You just need to be able to show all those people in Nashville what you are really made of!" said Mutt. "Thanks Mutt. I really needed to hear that someone likes what I do. And doesn't just want me to do what they want." said Shania.

"Your manager faxed me some of your songs." Mutt continued.."They are good. I actually have some ideas for this one song, "This Man of Mine". I think it could use a harder edge. I was thinking something more like "Any Man of Mine" just as Mutt finished the line, Shania jumped in with.. "Even when I'm ugly, he still better love me."

"Hey, that was pretty good. Let me write that down." Mutt said.

Shania laughed. She really enjoyed talking with this mysterious Mutt.


Meanwhile on the other end of the phone in England.....

Mutt heard Shania laugh. "Well if you liked that, I am going to put the phone down, and play what I think the melody of the song should be. Mutt put down the phone, and picked up his guitar. He started to sing "Any man of mine....." he even through in Shania's line. "Well?" Mutt asked

"I have some ideas for the second verse of the song....." replied Shania

The phone call went on for four hours, with Mutt and Shania working on various songs.

"Well I better let you get some sleep, Shania, its probably really late there." Mutt said

"Mutt, thank you for believing in me." replied Shania.

They both said goodnight, and hung up the phones.

Back in Nashville.....

Shania got in her pj's and went to bed. She was awakened by her apartment's doorbell.

"Comming" Shania said as she rolled out of bed.

Shania looked through the peephole, it was a delivery man. Shania opened the door. "Hi, are you Shaniya Twain?"
"It's Shania"

"Sorry, I have a package for you." said the man. Shania signed for the package, and he brought in the box and placed it on her living room table. Shania tipped him, and he left.

Shania looked at the box, it was from Mutt. She opened the box, it was a flower arrangement. She smelled them. Then read the card... "For my new superstar......Love Mutt"

Shania set the card by the phone and placed the flowers in a vase. She smelled their sweet perfume. She couldn't believe he sent her flowers. She knew she had to call him and thank him. She picked up the phone and dialed his number.

"Yep" Answered Mutt after a few rings. he sounded busy.

"Hi, Mutt?" Asked Shania. She was used to his "Hullo" and the yep took her buy surprise.

"Yeah, this is he" he replied, already knowing it was Shania that was calling.

"This is Shania, You sound busy, I can call at another time."

"No, no, I'm not busy at all" he lied. He took the chordless phone and walked out of the studio and left Bryan sitting in the sound booth. Bryan raised his arms in disbeleif. "what has gotten in to him?" he asked himself.

"Oh, okay. Well I wanted to thank you for the flowers...they are lovely." She said as she touched the red rose feeling it's softness on the tips of her fingers.

"Well, I thought you could use a litlle cheering up. You have what it takes. Believe me when I say that."

"I know what I want, but it's just hard you know? My songs aren't what Nashville is looking for..I don't know...maybe they aren't good enough." She sat back on the couch and played with some loose strands of hair.

"No, Don't say that. You have a lot of potential...All your songs have the perfect base to built on. Listen, with your ability to write, and my experience as a producer, we can really make some good music."

There was split second of hesitation and then she said, "Well I've heard your stuff...and you are far better at this than I am."

"No, listen. I just put the icing on the cake. A song is not all production and sound..it's got to have heart and feeling. You have that. I can't produce a song that doesn't have that base. I think we can work together. Really..." he trailed off. There was a moment of silence and then Shania said:

"I don't know.." her voice trailed off.

"Listen, your first album was good, but it wasn't you. It did not have your fire. I have heard what your capable of, you just haven't heard it yet" as Mutt was talking she smelled the flowers again, "I can't believe he sent me flowers" she thought.

"Listen, I have booked some studio time in Nashville while I am there for fanfair. I'll just have to make you hear what I hear." Mutt said. Mutt realized that Shania's experience in Nashville so far must have really shaken her confidence, and he needed to give her a big boost to get her to believe in herself, hopefully showing her in the studio would be just the thing, "it worked for Def Lepard" he thought.

"Studio time?, but we don't have anything completed yet." Shania said, sounding concerned.

"We will!" Mutt continued "When I get to Nashville, I want to cut a demo of "Any Man of Mine", I want to go to Mercury with some ammunition. Listen Shania, I'll call you tonight, we have some writing to do."

"Talk to later then, bye, and thank you for the flowers, they're lovely." said Shania.

They said their goodbyes, and hung up the phone.


Back in the studio, Bryan ran into the sound booth. "What's up mate? Where did you go? Let me guess, it's a new girlfriend?"

Mutt turned red, "We'll it is a girl, but she is not my girlfriend. She is a new country music artist, and I want to produce her next album."

"Country music? Are you mad, they won't let you into that club, you're a rock producer" replied Bryan.

"Listen, I have heard her sing over the phone, she writes her own stuff too. Plus, she's a real looker. With some polishing, she has what it will take, to blow the roofs off Nashville." Mutt said with great confidence.

"You haven't even met her, how do you know all that?" Bryan asked

"I just have this feeling about her" Mutt said as his voice trailed off

And besides...we are gonna meet her at Fan Fair in a month." replied Mutt. "Wait...what do you mean WE??" asked Bryan. "I mean you are coming with me to Fan Fair when I meet her for the first time." said Mutt. "What if I don't want to go with you?" asked Bryan jokingly. "Well, I guess I will just have to drag you then." replied Mutt.

THe next morning, night in mutt's time, Shania got a phonecall. "Hello, Mutt? Is that u?" Said Shania. "No, it's roomservice. We want to know if u would like some breakfast." Said the man. "Sure." Said Shania. Then they said their goodbyes. Shania got her breakfast and ate, and watched tv, anxiously waiting for Mutt to call. The phone rang again. "Hello?" Said Shania. "Is Fred there?" Asked the lady. "No." Said Shania. "Opps, sorry, wrong number." Said a lady, and then hung up. Shania was beginning to get worried. "What is going on! Why isn't Mutt calling?" Shania thought. Shania waited hours for the phone to ring again....

When the phone rang, Shania rushed over and answered "Mutt?" she asked.

"Sorry, to keep you waiting Leeny" said Mutt.
"I was just finishing up a track for Bryan's new album. We're kind of stuck, he still needs some more songs. However, so do you."

Over the next month Shania and Mutt exhanged phone calls writing songs, talking about eachother's backgrounds, where they came from, and about their families.


Shania's alarm clock went off, she got up, took a shower, and dressed on a nice black outfit, and yellow jacket she bought when she was on the Triple Play tour, when they stopped in Los Angeles. "Today's the big day" she thought. It was going to be her first fanfair performance, and she was going to finally meet her mysterious producer. She was so excited, she prayed that she would not come off as a babbling idiot.

A few hours later, at fanfair, Shania was signing autographs, she looked at her watch, she had been there for 3 hours, and no Mutt.

She got ready to perform "What Made You Say That" on stage.


Meanwhile in the audience....
Mutt and Bryan, applauded as Shania made her entrance. Mutt leaned over and said "That's her!" As Shania finished her performance, Mutt and Bryan walked backstage. Mutt was leaning against one of the stage's supports.

As Shania walked down the stairs, she saw this really tall, thin, long haired blonde guy, she paused, "Can I help you?" she asked.

"I think its the other way around Shania. Hi, I'm Mutt Lange." Shania immediatly jumpped into his arms, and hugged him. "I am so glad you came!", "Thank you for believing in me," "So what did you think?" Shania asked

"Well, you were, great, but you have to do something about that bloody hair, you look like Woody Woodpecker". Mutt said as he patted her hair. Shania put her hands on her hips, and gave Mutt a look, then laughed at his little joke. Bryan just rolled his eyes at the comment. "Mutt and his nicknames" thought Bryan.

Shania tipped her head to the side and let her eyes fall shyly to the floor.
She felt even more nervous than she had when she was onstage.
There was an awkward pause in their conversation. Neither had anticipated being as nervous as they both were. Mutt shoved his hands in the pockets of his faded jeans as Shania rocked back and forth on the heels of her black boots.
"So," Shania looked into Mutt's eyes as he smiled down at her.
"So," Mutt laughed.
Shania threw up her hands and giggled. "God aren't we a pair! We have spent months talking on the phone and now we don't know what the hell to say to each other."
Shania knew deep inside that what she said wasn't at all true. She had so much to say to Mutt that she didn't even know where or how to start. And now that she was finally standing in front of him, warmed by the look in his eyes, she found it almost impossible to say a word.
He must think I am so stupid, She sighed inwardly
What Shania didn't realize was that Mutt shared her feelings. He didn't know what to say to her either. He would never forget the moment he first heard her voice from outside the tent as he and Bryan walked inside. When he finally laid his eyes on her, he realized that all the feelings that had been brewing in his heart were real and not just fantasy.
Looking at her lovely upturned face made him feel like anything but the superstar producer he was. He felt like RJ Lange, the shy and gawky youth from South Africa again. He hadn't felt that way in a long time.
He reached out and took her hand in his,"Eilleen..."
"Mr. Lange!"
He turned from Shania and saw Luke Lewis approaching flanked by other Mercury executives. The two men greeted each other and shook hands. The executives standing behind Luke were the same men who were all in favor of dropping her contract. For once, Shania felt safe standing next to Mutt. These men who watched them with their poorly hidden smirks, had made her time in Nashville hell. They had tried to intimidate her and stonewall her plans for her career. But now, she was determined that they would never do that to her again.
She was surprised and secertly thrilled when she felt Mutt take hold of her hand again. "Well gentlemen, if you will please excuse Miss Twain and myself. I have promised her dinner and I think I need to rescue Bryan."
Everyone laughed as they watched Bryan being surrounded by a crowd of women of all ages waving pads and pens at him.
"Yeah, he looks like he needs a rescure crew," Shania laughed. She smiled at Luke and gave the other executives a pointed stare as she and Mutt walked past them arm-in-arm.........

"I feel so intimidated by them", Shania said, "But with you standing next to me, I felt a little more confident, about dealing with them."

Mutt looked down at her. "Dont be intimidated by them. Thats one thing you have to learn in this buisness...not to be intimidated by people! Your great! Believe me when I say that...there is just something about you that people love. And I see that."

She stoped walking and looked up at him. Her mind went wild on that last part. What was he saying? He was talking about love. But he couldn't be saying he loved her...could he? Her mind raced with wonder.Barely squinting as she looked into the sun. There was something about his blue eyes, that made her believe him. He was such a warm person, and a delight to be around. Mutt had rented a car, cause of his low key profile, he didnt want to look flashy in a limo. He walked her to her limo. She leaned back against the door casually.

"So...ill...call me later..when your ready...we will go out and grab a bite to eat. Wear somethin fancy, we'll go to the best resteraunt in town, where ever you want. OK?" he said as he looked at her.

"Ok Mr. Mutt...I mean mutt..sorry" she looked embarrased.He laughed as he saw the look on her face.

"Its ok" he said "Dont worry about it."

She looked back up at him. As he stood there tall with a lovley smile across his face. She walked a step and hugged him again. "Thank you" she said.

"Your welcome" he said. She pulled back and he opened her door. She steped in as he shut the door behind her. "Tonight...call me"

"Of course...thanks again" she said smiling.

"Sure thing" she car started to pull away "Woody". At that word she gave him a double take as he laughed and she gave him a weird look...as the limo pulled away down the driveway and out of his view.

He looked back at Bryan who was sitting on a log and lookin at his watch. "Can we leave yet Romeo?" yelled Bryan. Mutt just smiled at the romeo reference to him.

"Yeah" mutt yelled back.

"Finally!!" said bryan as Mutt slowly walked to him. "Hurry up Casanova!!" ......

"Bryan..." Mutt's voice trailed off as Shania's limo pulled out of site.

"I'm going to marry that woman." said Mutt.

"Oh really? I bet she wouldn't give you the time of day, if you weren't some record producer. She's hot! and your just plain normal" Bryan quipped. "I thought that this was a business meeting?"

"Come on I have to get ready"


Meanwhile in the limo:
Shania grabbed the phone and dialed Carrie's number.

The phone, rang....and Carrie's answering machine picked up "Hey sis, it's Leeny, I met Mutt, and I sounded like the biggest idiot, oh and I think I am in love..bye"
Shania hung up the phone.

"I meet Mutt, and he calls me 'woody woodpecker'..Shania chuckled to herself.

When she got to her apartment, and ran upstairs. She quickly stripped off her clothes, and rifled through her closet, trying to find the perfect outfit.

She found a nice red strapless dress to wear. She placed it on the bed, and ran into the shower.

She then dried off, and got dressed. She was fixing her hair. Thanks to Mutt, she kept seeing woody looking back at her in the mirror, and she started to laugh.

Around 6:30, Shania called and they arranged for Mutt to pick her up at 7:00. 7:00 neared and both were nervous. There was a knock at Shania's door at 7, and shania opened it to find mutt, in a suit and tie. Mutt was astonished at her beauty; she was dressed in a dazzling red dress. He swallowed and smiled. "Hey..." his mind searched. He felt like a little kid, and his only knowledge was of her. "woody." He grinned and Shania burst out laughing.

Shania blushed.

Shania, locked the door behind them, and Mutt took her arm, and walked to the car.

He openned the passenger door, and helped Shania in the car, making sure the dress did not get caught when he closed the door.

Mutt got in, started the car, and headed to the fanciest resturant in Nashville.

Mutt pulled out a CD, and put it in the player.

"What's that?", Shania asked.

"A demo of Any Man of Mine" Mutt said. Just as the track started.

After the song, Shania commented, "It's still missing something."

"Well it's only a rough cut, but I want you to lay down your vocal tracks, I want to go into that meeting with Mercury with your demo of the song." Mutt said. "Mercury is going to give you that pick up for the second album, whether they know it or not." Mutt laughed.

"I can't beleive you are doing this for me." Shania said. "I can't express how grateful I am."

"Your the first person besides my parents who beleived in me this intensly." Shania said.

They arrived at the resturant. Mutt again took Shania in arm, and they walked in.

As they ate, they discussed what deal he was going to offer Mercury to pick Shania up for a second album.

"I was going through our list of songs, we still need more, you don't happen to have something tucked away in that song book of yours?" Mutt asked.

Shania had nothing, that she thought was worth making into a full fledged song. Then she quickly thought of what Mutt said "our".
"I got an idea" Shania thought.

Shania spat out "If you're not in it for love, I'm outta here." just as she said it, she realized Mutt may take it the wrong way.

"Hey that's great. We can do something with that." Mutt said.

He poured two glasses of Champagne. He raised his glass, Shania did the same.

He gave a toast, "To Shania Twain, a very talented young woman, who is going to change the face of country music." Shania seemed embarrassed, and replied "To Mutt Lange, my guardian angel".

Mutt broke the silence. "Well, we better go, we have to be in the studio real early."

The waiter brought the check, Shania went to grab it, but Mutt beat her to it. "Please let me pay for part of it." said Shania.

"No need, this is my treat." Mutt reasured Shania.

Mutt took out his American Express Platinum card, and paid the bill.

Mutt then drove Shania home, and walked her to her apartment door.

"I had a really great time, thank you for your company at dinner." Mutt said.

Shania opened the door. Mutt took her hand, kissed it. "I guess I will see you tomorrow. I'll stop by and pick you up." Mutt said. Shania smiled when he kissed her hand, she thought it was cute. Shania walked into her apartment, turned and said goodbye to Mutt again. Mutt turned around and said "Til tomorrow Woody." Shania smiled, and closed the door.

Shania felt excited and warmed as she shut the door. She wished she was still with him, talking and laughing. 'Oh well,' she thought, 'i'll see him tomorrow...' she sighed. What a great guy. Finally, someone to help her through. Someone to believe in her. Shania was suprised at herself...she wasn't really the type to get a crush on someone, especially someone who she had only seen for a day so far. Shania drifted to sleep, thoughts of mutt, the evening and her future career winding through her mind.

The next day, shania arrived at the studio where mutt was already there. "Hey," she smiled. Mutt's face brightened as he saw her. "hey there," he said, unable to stop a grin from coming across his face. The two got to work, and shania immediately recongnized his talent that had shown through in so many other artists.

Mutt sat at the console, Shania was in the booth with her headset, and microphone.
In another booth was a band.

"Ok, everyone all set?" Mutt asked. Everyone, gave him a thumbs up. He looked over at Shania, she had a big smile on her face.

Mutt queued the band. Shania started to sing "Any Man of Mine...." Mutt liked what he heard so far, he made notes, where he wanted Shania to try some different things. He heard Shania hit some wrong notes. "Wait, stop. What was that?" Mutt asked.

"I need you to sing higher in that part Woody, and hold the notes at the end longer."

"Ok" replied Shania.

"Let's start from the chorus, and go into the second verse." Mutt said.

Shania sang the last verse and the band continued to play to the end of the song.

Shania continued as well...
"You gotta shimmy shake, make the earthquake..."

"Stop, hold up" Mutt said, sounding a bit annoyed. "What was that Woody?"

"I..I thought it sounded good, let me go with it." Shania said.

Mutt deciding to trust Shania's instincts, let her continue.

The completed the first take.

"Okay guys and girls, that was pretty good for practice. Let's do it again." Mutt said.

It continued for ten more takes, Mutt stopping during each one to offer praise and criticism. Shania could see Mutt was a taskmaster in the studio, she was exhausted.

"Okay, you can all take a break" Mutt said.
"Woody come here, I want you to hear this."

Shania walked into Mutt's booth. She looked at all the dials, and levers, and was amazed at how quickly Mutt's hands flew over them all. He still wore his head phones.
He took them off, turned on the speakers. "Here is a rough mix". Mutt said.

Shania listened as one of her songs, came over the speakers. Mutt noticed tears run down Shania's cheek. "Why the tears Woody?"

"I never thought I would hear one of my songs like this, it's like a dream." Shania replied.

Shania went back to her apartment after saying their goodbyes. Shania had ths crush feeling towards Mutt she couldn't help it but was falling more and more in love.

Mutt was back at his apartment. He rang Shania's sister to come along. Finally they were on there way to Europe. As Mutt and Shania were traverling and sight seeing and working. Mutt asked Shania out for dinner he also asked her sister aswell. While Mutt was working with Bryan Adams, Bryan asked "So whats up tonight?" Mutt said Me, Shania who will be my soon to be wife and her sister are going oput tonight. Bryan said "You're crazy. I don't think Shania will want to marry you. Mutt said "Oh you wait and see mate. One day you'll find out." Bryan said "Oh you bet I will." Soon Mutt went back to the hotel to change. Shania and Carrie were ready to go. So they went to a fancy resturant. Mutt was getting all nervouse. Shania said "Whats wrong?" Mutt went over to Shania and got on one knee and said "Shania will you Marry" Shania looked at her sister who was grinning away and then Shania turned to Mutt and said "Yes I'll Marry you" Shania and Mutt kissed for ages...

Shania eyes snapped open, her heart racing wildly. She sat up quickly, and found herself alone in her apartment.

What the hell is the matter with me? She wondered to herself, thinking of her dream. I barely know this man, and I'm dreaming about him asking me to marry him? I must be crazy, I've just been around him too much, thats all. Promising herself that in the morning she would spend less time outside the studio with Mutt, she drifted off back to sleep.

She woke up to the ringing of her telephone. He fumbled around the nightstand for it. She finlly found it and placed it to her ear.

"Hello?" she said drowsly.

"Hey Woody..you need to come to the studio...i have something to show you" it was mutt, the man she couldnt get off her mind since she met him, and he was talking very quickly. She could barley understand him through his accent and the speed of his voice.

" Mutt" she looked at the clock on her dresser."Its 5 am....we dont have to start till 8 this morning....cant it wait?" she asked...really hoping to see him as soon as she posibly could.

"Eilleen!" he said. She paused a second. he had never called her that before, but he did not say it hardly, it was soft, she coulnt quite tell how he said it...but never the less...it shocked her that he did say it. "I need you to come down here...I think you will really want to see this...please come." he was talking slowly, softly, and it went straight to her heart How does he do that? she wondered.
"Ok...I will be there in 20 minutes" she hung up the phone and jumped out of bed. She stumbled around her drawers and found something to wear. She went in the bathroom and changed.
10 minutes later she came out, still drowsy, and got her keys, then left out the door. She Got in her car and drove to the studio.
When she got there she saw mutts car sitting out front and the lights on. She walked to the door and opened it. Mutt was already there to greet her. "Hey" she said with a smile.

"Hey" he replied back. They shared a short breif hug. "So come on in..your going to love this." they started to walk twoards the control room, mutt kept talking. I couldnt sleep last night...I was just thinking about....." he stoped speaking. He was afraid to tell her what he was really thinking about...her. "Anyways....I came down here and started fooling around with the song" they reached the control room and mutt walked over to the controls " And this is what I got. " he said as she puched a small red button. The room filled with the music.
"Oh my goodness!" said Shania "Thank you." she said. He looked at her and gave her the same sweet smile.
"You did it...like i said...i just put the icing on the cake." They were only standing a foot away from eachother. She looked up at him . He looked at her. At the same time, they came together and hugged. But it was not a ordinary hug,it was "the" hug. It was different. Shania didn't want to let him go. She felt, save , and loved. As these thoughts ran through her head, she admited to herself.....she loved him. What had her dream been telling her? She now knew.
At the same time, Mutt did not want to let go...he loved her back. How had this happened...he was not looking for love, yet he found it.His mind raced with thoughts.

While they were still holding eachother Shania looked up at him. His face showed his love for her as he looked at her. he started to lower her head to hers, and they shared their first kiss. It was not full of passion, but it was sweet, pure, wonderful. As their lips touched,a dn their eyes closed, her heart skiped a beat, and the world seemed to stand still for that short time. Mutt pulled back and looked at her, her eyes were still closed.
Opening them slowly, she looked at him. They both new, they had some things to talk about...and they couldnt wait......

As the song ended Mutt turned off everything and the two walked out the door. As Shania was about to get back in her car Mutt said "Shania...we really need to go somewhere and talk. How about we go to the park?" "Ok...who's car should we take?" replied Shania. "How about we take mine? I can follow you to your apartment so you can leave your car there." said Mutt. "Ok. Just follow me!" said Shania. Once they got back to Shania's she got in Mutts car and they headed to the park. As they were driving Shania had her arm on the arm rest and casually Mutt took her hand in his. Shania just looked at him and smiled. When they got to the park it was deserted so they found a bench and sat down next to each other. Neither one knew what to say at first so they just looked at each other both knowing what they wanted to say but not knowing how to tell each other. Then finally getting the courage to say something to each other, "I love you" they both said at the same time. They both laughed. "Eilleen, You are a great singer and songwriter. You have what it takes to go far in the music industry." said Mutt. "Thank you. No one has ever had that much faith in me. I don't know what I would do without you helping me now. He did a great job on "Any Man Of Mine". I can't wait to see what we can do together for the rest of the songs." Shania said. "Shania...you could do it without me. I am happy to help you. But when we kissed back there I felt something that I have never felt before. I want to spend the rest of our lives together." said Mutt. "I felt that too. I too want to spend the rest of my life with you." replied Shania. Mutt took Shania in his arms and held her for a while then they kissed again.

They kissed for while in the early morning breeze as they watched the sun rise over the trees. The birds were chirping, and there was a man standing about 50 yards away playing his guitar softly on the corner for money. The moment was perfect,very romantic, and they never wanted it to end. He wanted to hold her there, in that moment forever.
They both knew there was much more that needed to be said between them. But everytime he looked at her he had a urge to kiss her. He loved her so very much. It had all happened so fast. When had it even started...he didnt know. They just held eachother close.
"Your so beautiful" he whispered as he kissed the top of her head. "I love you".
A few minutes later mutt got up. "We really need to talk now...we need to do some talking" even though neither of them knew what to say to eachother.
"You know...that a lot of people are not going to like me being with you woody." he said. Shania nodded. 'I mean....I am a rock guy, I am quite a bit older than you-" shania inturuped him and stood up facing him.

"I dont care about them. They can think whatever the hell they want to about me, or us. As long as we can be together....I dont care.....and I am sure there are going to be a lot of people who will support us being together." She smiled at him as she talked. She walked to him slowly and put her arms around his waist. They kissed again. This time a little more romanticly than before.
When they stoped, they held eachother close.
"Lets go for a little walk" said Mutt as he looked at her.
"Ok" she said. They walked down a small path with their arms around eachother.....

After they were done talking Mutt and Shania walked back to his car. Mutt helped Shania in then got in the car and drove to Shania's apartment. He walked her to her door and they kissed goodbye but neither one wanted to have to go. "Mutt...would you like to come in?" asked Shania. "Sure...I would love to." said Mutt. Mutt came in and sat down on the couch. "Would you like anything to drink?" asked Shania. ""I dont really drink much...but....sure." replied Mutt. "Ok. Sorry I wan't really prepared for guests. Is some wine ok?" said Shania. "Yeah...why don't we just share a glass?" said Mutt. "Sure" said Shania as she poured the glass of wine then went over and sat in Mutt's lap. As they sat sipping the wine Mutt asked "Can I see your record collection?" "Sure...It's right over here," said Shania as she began to walk towards where the records were. Mutt looks through them then finds one that is a compilation of soft rock love songs then he goes and turns down the lights in Shania's apartment. He walks back over to where Shania is standing and as he kisses her his lips crushed hers as they locked in a passionate embrace, fire raging through them. Both burning with desire, her hands explored his body, fast and furious. He gave her zipper a tug, the dress falling to her ankles. "I want to touch you. I want to feel your skin under my hands. Like this." he skimmed them up her sides, down. Her stomach quivered when he touched her. "No, keep your eyes open." He leaned forward , caught her chin in his teeth. A brief nip that shot ache down the center of her body. "I want to look at you" she told him. "He lowered his hands down her body slowly, knuckles grazing against her. her low moan echoed like thunder in her ears. "Step out" he murmered when her dress pooled at her feet. As she blinked, opened her mouth to speak, he simply covered it with his. Gentle and warm, somehow reassuring even as the edge of something reckless shimmered at the edges. Then his arms were around her, sliding and skimming over her back as he circled her, a kind of seductive waltz toward the doorway. Nerves chased after the heat that rose to her skin. At the door of the bedroom he lifted her. "There are all manner of things i've imagined doing to you. Let me" The sun streamed rich and golden with the eventing. IT washed over the bed, over her face as he laid her down. The matress gave under his weight, and he linked his fingers with hers. Restraint and unity. And watching her, always watching her, he took her mouth. Slowly at first, and sweetly, until her hands relaxed under his, until her lips softened, parted, invited. He felt her heartbeat slow, begin to thicken. She slowly unbuttoned it and slid it of him. Kissing his chest. Then she undid the belt and pulled it off....never taking her eyes off his face as she looked at her. He lowered his head and kissed her passionately. She reached down and in one motion pulled off his pants and underwear. They were both naked and vulnerable to each other. Their bodies curved perfectly into each other. They still kissed. Then with one motion of his body, he claimed her, going into her slowly. She arched her throat and let out a moan of pure pleasure. "I love you" he whispered in her ear as he kissed her neck. "I love you too": she said, as another sensation hit her she arched her back into him and moved with him in perfect rhythm. They spent hours making love for the first time. So perfectly that they moved with each other, feeling like they were melting into each other. Hours later when he left her, he held her in his arms and kissed her.

She let her lips slide against his, willingly and loving. He pulled her tighter around him and she murmered in pleasure. She arched as heat balled in her belly, and the groan strangled to her throat. He aroused her to shudders with his mouth.
He didn't want her to anticipate. Wanted all her senses stunned and her mind empty of all but pleasure. She would think of him, only of him. He would see to it. When she was steeped in him, finally, he would have her.
Her body was slender, the muscles suprisingly firm, almost tough, with delicate skin a delightful contrast. He indulged himself in the taste of it, while part of him calculated how to exploit those nerves and destroy every barrier.
He dragged her up, hands rough, grip near to bruising, ripping another gasp from her as her head fell back, her hair tumbled. Her fingers flexed under his. She wanted to weep. Or scream. "Mutt"
"Again." He plunged into her. Her mind went brilliant. She moved with him, matching each slow, smooth stroke. Absorbing him, feeding on each individual sensation until they became one glorious feast.
When the rhythm quickened, she was ready, she was eager, and enraptured by the way his eyes, the stunning blue of them, remained fixed on hers.
"Stay with me." He was lost in her now. Drowning in her now. His heart beat brutally against hers as he buried his face in her hair.

"Oh, uhh, sorry Mutt, I was just thinking about, uhh, how the cd is going to sound." Said Shania. "Oh, okay." Said Mutt. "Well, I better be going,"Said Mutt. "Okay," Said Shania. They both kissed, and then Mutt left. "I can't believe I daydreamed that!" Thought Shania. "We're not even married, and I was daydreaming that! Mutt must think I'm stupid." Thought Shania...

Shania looked around, she lost track of where they were. They were still in the park discussing the album.

"Shania we have to go to see Mercury tomorrow, are you ready?" Mutt asked.

"Yes, as long as your with me." Shania said.


"Oh, I wanted to invite you to travel around Europe with me." Mutt said. Shania felt Deja vu. "I have to ticket on the concorde for next week. I want us to get away from Nashville, so we can complete the entire album. Mutt said.

"Are you sure?" asked Shania.

"Listen I have really enjoyed your company. I think we will also be able to complete the album, quicker if we are together, instead on the phone all the time." Mutt insisted.

"I would love to go", Shania replied. She kissed Mutt on the cheek.

"You don't know how much this all means to me." Shania said.

They continued walking around the park, hand in hand. Discussing family, friends, and of course music.


Later....

Mutt drove Shania to the Mercury offices. They walked up to the conference room, and sitting there were Luke Lewis, her only supporter in the room besides Mutt, and the rest of the executives that wanted to cut her career short....

Things got down to buisness, and it became apparent that the Mercury executives weren't keen on taking shania up on a 2nd album. Shania felt herself slipping as that becamse obvious. She glanced at Mutt. He squeezed her hand underneath the table.

Mutt started talking, and with some help from Luke Lewis, Mercury was putty in his hands. In no time there was talk on putting out the 2nd album. Knowing Mutt's good background, the 2nd album looked promising.

Afterwords, Shania and Mutt walked out to his car. A joyous Shania threw her arms around Mutt. "how'd you do that? it was practically already a plan for them not to pick me up again, then, bam! it was the other way around!" she grinned, beaming happily.

Mutt just smiled. "Its easy when I have such talent on my hands." Shania blushed, and Mutt leaned in to kiss her. It was a perfect moment, Mutt and Shania kissing in the Mercury parking lot with plans for a new and better future for shania's career and for both their lives.

"How would you like to go out to dinner again tonite? To celebrate?" Shania smiled. She had been hoping he'd ask that.

"I'd love to," she replied truthfully.

"Pick ya up at 6:30, same as last time."

They got into his car and he drove her home.
"6:30" said Mutt out the window.
"Yep" said shania as she walked up the stairs and entered her apartment. She looked around at all her stuff. "Well..... better start packing...im going to europe!!!With mutt" she said to herself. She got dressed up fancy again. She wore a black silk long dress with a slit on the side and spagetti straps. As she was putting in her earings in she looked at the clock. 6:30. There was a knock at the door. She walked to it in her high heels. As she opend the door she smiled to see mutt. He was holding a dozen peach and white long stem roses. When he saw her, his gaw droped.
"woody...you look beautiful...more than beautifuy."

Shania giggled at his flattery.
"Thank you" she said "You look very handsome yourself" she said.

"Tks" he said "These are for you" he said as he handed her the flowers. She put them in the vase.
"You want to come in?" she asked.
"Umm...we cant..we have reservations in 15 minutes....you ready?"

"yeah" she grabed her purse and walked out the door.....

"You really do look wonderful," Mutt said again. "Thanks," she said, blushing. "You don't look so bad yourself." He grinned, eyes sparkling.

They walked out to Mutt's car, got in and drove to the restaurant. It was nice, with dimmed lights and candles. They ordered their food, and talked. "Thanks again, for helping me out with Mercury...your so wonderful, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it..."

"Woody, its no problem, really. Its my pleasure."

Shania smiled.

Their food arrived and they talked through the night, until the restaurant closed at 11:00 pm. By then it was dark and raining, bolts of lightning flashing through the sky. Shania shivered...

Mutt pulled Shania close to him and helped her get in the car. They went back to Shania's. Shania invited Mutt to come in and he did. They stayed up all night talking to each other. They talked about the plans for the album and everything they could think of. Mutt didn't want to leave and Shania didn't want him to leave. When Shania finally fell asleep in Mutts arms he picked her up and carried her to her bed. he softly kissed her then said goodbye and went back to his hotel.

Mutt fell asleep and slept till around 10:00. They were planning on meeting at the studio at 11:00, so he quickly got ready and went down there. Shania was already there, to his suprise, listening to the rough mixes and dancing to 'Any Man of Mine'.

"Did I come at a bad time?" He laughed. She stopped in mid-twirl and burst out laughing.

They kissed quickly and soon got to work. They decided that Shania would go out and get some lunch. When she came back, Mutt wasn't in the studio room. "Mutt?" she called...

"Mutt??" she called out.

Shania walked to the back of the studio. She opened the door slightly and peaked in. Mutt was wrapping a box. He was putting a big bow on it.

Shania quickly walked away and waited in the recording booth, for Mutt.

Mutt walked out, "I didn't hear you come in I have something for you." Mutt handed Shania the box.

"OOOhhhhh, what is it?" Shania asked with a big smile on her face.

As she began to open it she looked at Mutt and smiled. She took the top off the box and inside was a beautiful ruby heart shaped necklace with diamonds around the edge. "Oh Mutt..It's beautiful! Thank you!" said Shania. "Here let me help you put it on." said Mutt as he put the necklace around Shania neck and fastened the clasp in the back. Shania was so happy and very much in love with Mutt even though they had only known each other for almost a month.

When he finished putting the necklace on Shania, she spun around and threw her arms around him. "Thank you, Mutt," she said again, smiling, looking into his warm eyes. "You shouldn't have done this for me, though."

"Yes I should've," he grinned. "Anything for you."
She kissed him gently and said, "you are so sweet."

He tried to not blush, but we all know that once a blush starts, its impossible to stop it. Shania laughed, and they leaned in for another kiss before getting back to work.

When they started workin on the next song Shania went in the booth and Mutt went to the controls. Shania started to sing "Whose bed have your boot been under? and whose heart did you steal I wonder?..." "Wait...how bout we try this...before you start the song you sing whose bed have your boots been under one time then strat the song just like you had it." suggested Mutt. "Ok...I'll do that." said Shania. As she finished the song Mutt looked at her and smiled. They had actually finished it twice as fast as they had finished Any Man Of Mine. "That was great Shania!. I should have it ready for you to hear in a few hours." said Mutt. "Ok...are you hungry? I was gonna go get something to eat." said Shania.

Mutt smiled and said, "I'd love to, and yes, i'm starving. Why don't I pick you up in a half an hour or something?"

"ok, sounds good." They just stood there looking at each other for a minute before leaning in to kiss.

Shania drove back to her apartment. She checked her answering machine..."Hi Leeny, it's your sis, guess you're out with your new boyfriend [carrie laughs]. Don't let him get away. Sounds like a great guy." Shania laughed.

Shania went to the bathroom to fix herself up for dinner. Just as she was about to leave, the phone rang. "Eilleen speaking, who's this?"

"Woody, it's Mutt, I am going to have to cancel out on dinner. Bryan needs my help on a song, plus I want to finish up the rough cuts of the songs we worked on.

Shania exhaled "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow then. Bye" Shania made a kissing noise into the phone.

"Love you too Woody, night" they hung up the phone.

Her sister's message gave her an idea for a song. Shania picked up her writing ledger and flipped to a blank page. She started to write.....[Am I dreamin' or stupid? I think I've been hit by cupid.] "Hummmmmmm" Shania exhaled, and moved her hand through her hair, trying to come up with a hook for the chorus. She started to write again..[I got my heart set, my feet wet and he don't even know yet] Shania paused, then wrote whatever came to mind, she would worry about making it a song later, she wanted to get the idea on paper. She continued..[I'll tell him someday, someway, somehow. I want bells to ring, a choir to sing, the white dress, the guests, the cake, the car, the whole darn thing.] Just then her phone rang.

"Hello?" said Shania.

"Leeny!!! its Carrie. I finally caught you at home."

"So how's what's name? Mutt.?" Carrie asked.

Just then, the hook Shania was looking for popped into her head, she quickly wrote it down, before answering her sister. She wrote [No one needs to know, right now]

"Thanks sis" Shania said excitedly

"For what?" asked Carrie.

"You just gave me an idea for a song I am working on." answered Shania

"Is the song about your boyfriend? Come on sis, I wanna hear all about him" Carrie asked.

"First, he is not my 'boyfriend', he is the executive producer of my new record, we are just friends." Shania said, trying to avoid the subject. She never felt for someone, like she felt for Mutt. When they hugged, she knew he was the one, she just hadn't figured out to tell Mutt yet.

"Yeah, okay sis." Carrie said sarcastically.

Meanwhile, in the studio......

Mutt dailed Bryan's phone number...
Bryan picked up.

"Hey mate, you with your girlfriend?" Bryan asked.

"Bryan, she is not my girlfriend. She is a singer I happen to be working with." Mutt replied.

"Yeah working right into your heart. You are spending so much time with her, she is practically your wife." Bryan said jokingly.

Mutt felt a little uncomfortable, he did not like discussing personal matters, even with his best friend.

Dodging the subject Mutt continued. "Bryan, I think I got that song you're looking for. Mutt started to sing the chorus "Pleae forgive me..."

After Mutt was done. "Well?" he said.

"You have definitly been spending too much time with Shania. I think you're in love pal." Bryan said.

"Well how was the song, do you want it?" Mutt asked.

"It's a great song, I want it." Bryan said, then quickly added "I'll even sing it at your wedding, you and Shania can dance to it...." Bryan started to laugh, he loved jerking Mutt's chain, when it came to girls.

Shania decided to surprise Mutt. She fixed a quick vegatable dish, put it in some tupperware, and drove to the studio. Mutt gave her a key so she could go in and out any time she wanted. As she walked in, she heard Mutt talking in one of the offices, she paused infront of the door, and listened in.

"....I just don't know how to tell her yet."
Mutt said.

Shania was curious, but Mutt was saying goodbye, and she heard him hang up the phone.

Shania walked in, and Mutt jumped from surprise. "What are you doing here?" Mutt said

"I fixed you something to eat. I hope you like it." Shania said sheepishly. Wondering what Mutt was talking about on the phone.

"Its not a big deal," Mutt interuppted. Mutt wondered if she would ask what exactly he was talking about...

"Oh, nothing special, a little something I thought you'd like" Shania replied, still embarrassed on walking in on his conversation.

"I'm glad you stopped by", Mutt continued, "as something has come up and I need to talk wtih you."

"Oh?", said Shania hesitantly, already sensing something.

"I just spoke with Bryan. I need to return to England redo something on his album", Mutt replied, his voice lowering and his face growing sad with each word.

"****!" Shania thought to herself, but words failed her as she felt someone had just dealt her a blow, knocking the wind out of her.

"I will be in the studio for at least a couple of weeks", continued Mutt, not wanting to be ending what was becoming a reawakening of his soul.

Then it hit him. "Shania, why don't you fly over to England and work with me there." Mutt, not wanting to to chance hearing a refusal, continued. "Bryan's album will take up some of my time, but we would still have time to write and work out of my studio. Then, when my obligations to Bryan are over, we could go on to Spain as planned....." Mutt's voice trailed off but his eyes blazed deep into hers, feeling her warmth, embracing her soul.

Shania thought for a second. She was about to finish her mini-tour with Terry Wendt. She had plans to go to Timmins to settle things with Paul, knowing their relationship was over but wanting to leave things between them in a place where they could both be happy. After all their years together she owed Paul that much. Surely she could shorten the Timmins trip and fly over to
London in about 10 days. Mutt's work with Bryan would be over by then and....

"Yes", Shania said, a broad smile breaking out on her face despite her desire to remain controlled, "yes, I could come to London after I take care of some obligations here."

They looked at each other, and in a moment, they both stepped toward each other and embraced.

Sitting on the Concorde, Shania felt at once overwhelmed with the new life Mutt was introducing her to and yet secure knowing this man, her mentor, would protect her as he taught her the ways of the world. And she couldn't stop thinking about his blue eyes, eyes that had pierced through all the walls she had built around herself after her parents had died. She knew she was in trouble. She was falling fast, and so soon after ending her relationship with Paul.

Paul. She almost forgot about him these last couple of days as she hurriedly wrapped up her affairs in Nashville and packed for her trip to England. It had been difficult going to Timmins this time. Things were different for her. She and Paul were no longer together, yet her ties to his family were still strong. How would she deal with all of them? She thought Paul would be hurt, angry at her for changing before his eyes. He was with her in Nashville when she met Mutt. Paul knew her well, so it was hard hiding her fascination with Mutt Lange. Paul felt powerless competing with this Svengali. He as much as admitted that to her. Things hadn't been going well between them for some time. And now that she was distracted by this amazing man, Paul was pushed to back burners. She was clever in getting Paul to go home to visit his family. She wanted to be able to see Mutt without having to deal with Paul's feelings. So when she was faced with seeing Paul in Timmins, she expected a difficult time with him. Especially since her thoughts and feelings were on this tall, blonde-haired, blue-eyed man. That was it. Mutt was a man and Paul was still a boy....

She didn't expect what happened when she got to Timmins. Carrie and Jill tried to warn her but she was so distracted by her thoughts of Mutt that she didn't hear their warnings. She found out driving from the airport with Jill. Paul was seeing another woman! Her friend Judy, no less! She felt betrayed by both of them. Her anger started to build up. And then it her
-- she was free! Free to go to London, to follow her dreams -- and to go to Mutt.

Mutt. Those blue eyes haunted her. Mutt. I can say all the things I've been wanting to say to you. I've been holding back but now I can be yours... if you want me.

As the Concorde began it's decent in London, her eyes welled up as she thought of her parents. "I'm ok, mom and dad," she thought, "I've found my man!"

The concorde landed, Shania was amazed that she could travel to Europe so fast.

Mutt arranged to have a car pick her up and drop her at her hotel.

Shania looked out the window and saw Old Ben, something she only ever saw in a book.

She was lost in thought when the phone rang..

"Woody!!" Mutt said excitedly after she answered. Mutt continued. "Can you come over to the studio, I want you to hear some of the final cuts of your songs, that I have been working on between Bryan's album.

"Sure!! I would love to see you." Shania said.

"Fine I will have a car pick you up." Mutt said. They said they're goodbyes and hung up the phones.


Shania fixed herself up, and went to the lobby to wait for the car. When Shania arrived at the studio Mutt was talking with Bryan.

They both turned as Shania entered the room..

"So I finally get to meet, for more than 5 minutes, the girl who stole Mutt's heart. Hi, I 'm Bryan, we met at fan fair." said Bryan. Shania blushed at Bryan's comment.

"Now if I can find a way to tell Mutt, how I really feel about him" Shania thought.

Mutt gave Shania a kiss. As they broke the kiss, Mutt thought "I have to tell her I want to spend the rest of my life with her."

Mutt started to play the completed tracks, to her album. "Woody, I'll be right back, I just have to get something from my office."

Mutt walked back to his office, and called Shania's sister, he had the number so he could reach Shania while she was home in Timmins.

"Hi, Carrie. It's Mutt. I just wanted to ask if you and your brothers could come, to Paris, in about 8 weeks, I'm paying for the tickets. I want to surprise Shania with something."

"Surprise her?" asked Carrie.

He wanted to have her family over when he asked for Shania's hand in marriage. He felt it was important to get their permission first.

"I want to marry your sister." Mutt blurted out.


"REALLY!!!" Carrie said excitedly.

"Yes, but I wanted you to all be here when I ask her. Mutt said.

"That's great!! I know Jill and I can come, but the boys can't." Carrie replied.

"Please don't say anything to your sister. I want your visit to be a total surprise." Mutt said.

"I hope Shania says yes" Mutt thought.


Mutt and Carrie finished their conversion, and he walked back into the studio, to be greated by Shania jumping into his arms.

"I don't know what to say, it's fantastic. Thanks for believing in me." Shania said as she hugged him.

Carrie and mutt said their goodbyes and Mutt went back out to Shania. Bryan was just leaving, and they said their goodbyes. Once he had left Mutt turned to shania. "well, haven't seen you in awhile," he said with a grin. She was more beautiful than ever, and he shivered with excitement at the thought of her being his wife.

Shania smiled and said softly, "No, I guess you haven't." They stood there looking at each other for a little bit in silence before he stepped toward her and swept her up in his arms.

I don't know the exact timing, but according to Terry Wendt's book, she went back and forth between London and Nashville a couple of tims while Mutt finished up in London, then they went to Spain and met her sister's in Paris (probably in November some time) and shoppped for her wedding dress in Paris!

As the sun broke through the London fog Shania awoke from her dreams, confused at first as to where she was. She looked around the strange room and then remembered. She was in the guest room of Mutt Lange's apartment! Fantasy and reality had been colliding in her mind but she was really here, in London, with this incredible man. She couldn't believe the intensity of her feelings. She wondered if he was similarly smitten. There were so many indications when they were together in Nashville, but things had cooled a bit since her arrival in London. It was just as well as she definitely needed time to sort through her feelings.

Things had been happening so quickly to her. She felt like she was Alice in Wonderland, with everthing having a surreal feeling to it. It seemed like only yesterday that she had said goodbye to Paul. Despite the admonishments of her sister's and Mary, she got on the Concorde and came to London and what she hoped would be a new beginning for herself -- both personally and professionally. She knew why Mary and her family were concerned. Yet she silenced them in her head and listened instead to the strong voice inside herself. Her mother always said she was headstrong, but had she gone too far this time? No, she didn't think so.

Of course she hadn't. This man was special, and any doubting words from any family or friends was nothing compared to the feeling she got when around him.

Mutt knocked on the door. "C'mon in!" Shania called, eager to see him.

"Finally awake, huh?" he said teasingly. Shania smiled.

Mutt leaned against the wall and Shania pulled herself out of bed. Her head throbbed with sleepiness, and she flopped back down. Mutt laughed. "Poor Woody...working too had..standing up is too hard for her delicate body," he teased. At that, shania leapt easily out of the bed and went and playfully socked Mutt on the shoulder. He mock cried. Shania burst out laughing at a grown man fake crying. "you little baby," she giggled.

Mutt grinned, and they were silent for a while. Shania leaned against the wall next to Mutt, watching the sun rise above the city from the window. Mutt casually slipped an arm around her shoulder, and Shania moved a little closer.

"Ok, I'm awake now. You're working me too hard!", she said laughingly! In truth, she loved the way he needed to do everything perfectly -- she certainly met her match in that department!

"Why don't you get dressed while I make us some breakfast. It's Sunday, I guess we both deserve the day off."

Shania got dressed and raced into the kitchen where she slammed straight on into Mutt. Mutt went no where while shania when flying backwards on the ground. They looked at each other in suprise then both burst out laughing at the same time. It struck them both as hilarious, Shania lying on the floor after running straight on into him. When she finally caught her breath, she said, "Sorry." Mutt chuckled and helped her out. "its ok," he said. "half my fault, anyway. what were u doing anyway? running a race?"

Shania smiled. "I dunno, I got a lot of energy today."

"uh oh."

"Oh, shut up," shania laughed. Mutt did too, and there they were, hysterical again. When they finally got their breath, they ate breakfast and sat around, wondering what the heck to do on their day off. "Maybe we could go tour London or something, or just hang around here," Mutt said...

As Shania dressed, she returned once again to her thoughts. She knew her songs were coming along wonderfully but stopped herself from projecting where this could take her. She also knew, with every passing day, that she was growing more in love with Mutt. Initially it was just his mind that attracted her. But those blue eyes continued to haunt her, especially in her dreams. She blushed as she flashed on last nights dream, then quickly rinsed off. She was looking forward to their trip to Spain later this week. It would be just her and Mutt without the distractions that kept undermining her time with him in London. Maybe things would be as intimate as it had been going in Nashville. She hoped so.

When she returned to the dining room she was surprised to see beautiful roses lying across her plate. She found herself blushing again . Spain was going to be very interesting indeed!

Mutt came back and shania said, "thank you for the rose," with a smile.

Mutt smiled gently, and absently put an arm around her shoulder. Shania looked up at him and those brilliant blue eyes looked back at her. She swallowed, barely able to control herself. She leaned in and kissed him, suprising Mutt. *could she love me?* he thought. He kissed her on the lips. When they pulled away he smiled at her, but Shania's eyes were serious. She wanted to badly to tell him how she felt, here and now, but didn't know how. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth to speak...

Mutt grinned. "Awesome...I'll call about getting a private plane.

Mutt made a phone call, and came back. "I can't get one until 10:00, is that ok?

Shania shrugged. "Sure, unless you don't want it that late." "Doesn't make any difference to me," he said.

The flight was booked. Shania and Mutt spent the day at Mutt's appartment, chatting about music, family, and their pasts. Shania told him about her parents dying when she was 21, how she was delayed from her music career with family respondsibility. Secretly, Mutt admired her. He could never have taken care of a family when he was 21, alone.

He told her about the death of his parents, also. He found it amazingly easy to talk to her, especially since they both shared so much in common.

For dinner, they made something together, cooking and laughing in the kitchen, running into each other and tripping over their own feet. Both had not remember a time in the near past when they had had so much fun.

Afterwards they packed their stuff and met up again by the front door. "remember everything? after all, we won't be back for a month," mutt said. "yep how bout u?" "I think I have everything" replied Mutt.

They drove to the airport and boarded the plane. The flight was dark and quiet, and Shania eventually fell asleep on Mutt's shoulder.

Mutt was careful not to wake her. She looked so peaceful. He kept an arm around her, and nearly fell asleep himself, in a state of bliss.

When the plane landed in the airport outside of Paris, he woke her up. They left the plane, got their luggage, got a taxi and left for where they would be staying.

They got to the hotel (They were staying in a hotel, right?) and went to their rooms. There was a door connecting their two rooms. "If you need anything," Mutt said, "Just tell me, ok?"

"ok," shania replied.

"And woody?" Mutt said as she was turning to leave.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for coming here. It makes it so much better." Shania smiled sweetly. "Its my pleasure. I have a lot of fun with you," she said. She could feel the urge to tell him about her feelings tugging at her heart. When he suddenly walked to her and embraced her, she almost lost control. She hugged him to her, hard, and when he pulled back and kissed her, she kissed him back. She didn't want to leave his arms, but knew she couldn't stay in them forever. But he was her boyfriend, wasn't he? What did he consider himself as? She wanted to ask, but resisted. Her head was spinning. She rested it on Mutt's shoulder with their one last hug, then left that safety and comfort. Walking to her room, she almost died. But when she thought of him just in the next room, with the door open in between them and his words of if she needed him then to wake him, she was comforted. She laid down and dozed off into a restless, dreamy state...

She woke up to mutt's voice. "Woody, wake up," he said.

Shania sat up. The sun was coming in through the curtains in her hotel room. "Mornin'," she said drowsily.

Shanias hair was all a mess and she had slight racoon eyes from the make up from the previous day. Mutt was already dressed in a pair on blue shorts and a multicolor shirt.

"You need to go or something?" she asked as she rubed some sleep out of her eyes.
"Actually" he said as he got down and sat on the edge of her bed. "I thought that we could do some sight seeing today. I am ahead of schedule on everything" then he showed a shy smile " And I just want to spend time with you" as he said that..shania caught somehting in his eye. A glimps of something. What was he thinking? she wondered. His blue eyes told her things, things she wanted to say herself to him...but she was afraid that he didn't feel the same. Little did she know that mutt was thinking about the same thing. From the first time he saw her he was smitten by her...he loved her. Their short kisses and hugs were not enough for him, he wanted to hold her all night, dance under the moonlight, and kiss her romanticly..when ever he wanted...he loved her.

"Mutt?" shania said. He had trailed deep in his thoughts. "Mutt?" she repeated.

"I love you" he said quickly..it was the first thing that came to his mind "What?" he said.

Shania's jaw droped at what he said. "What did you say?" she asked with a smile across her face.

He took her hands in his and looked her straight in the eyes. "I love you" he said again. She looked at him, she could not speak. All she could do was smile at him. "I have felt like this for a while now." he looked at her...afraid at what she was about to say. She still couldn't speak. She suddenly grabed him in her arms and hugged him tight. They closed their eyes. She finally managed the words out...

"I love you too Mutt" she said. They just sat there holding eachother. with the light from outside shining on them...

"Do you think it is too early?" she asked looking at him, with love in her eyes. "We have not know eachother for very long..I mean-" but he covered her mouth with his again, stoping her from continuing. When he finally pulled back and looked at her, she still hadher eyes closed.

"No" he finaly answered her "I dont think it is too early. I have been waiting for you for my whole life" he said that as he took her in his arms. "I love you...unlike I have never known I can love someone.....I want to be with you" Hearing him say this she let herself go. She felt him against her. His arms around her so tightly as he held hr close as they sat in her bed. Shania had no idea what to say to him. She loved him the same way. He believed in her, he loved her, he was funny, he was very smart, he was good looking, he listend to her, he was very sweet and romantic. To her...he was too good to be true.

"Are you real?" she asked looking at him. "Can you really be here?" she smiled.

"Im here" he said rocking her back and forth "And I am not going anywhere" he kissed the top of her head.
