Are they necessary?

I thought it was just my computer going througha faze or AOL playin games with me. But I asked a couple others & thewy said they got them too. They're really annoying.

I don't have any control over them. The Roughstock Network has changed advertisers and I'm not sure how often the pop-ups should be showing up. I noticed a lot earlier on in the day but i'm not getting as many now. I'll have to ask OldCowhand and get back to you.

Thank you for your questions regarding the pop-ups that are now appearing on the site.

A majority of advertisers use pop-ups coupled with banners (you'll notice that the pop-ups match the banner on the page). This results in a better click and conversion rate for the advertiser, which is what keeps them coming back. Without advertisers, and unless users like you click on the ads and buy from them, the site can't continue to be free.

One of many alternatives that we have considered is creating a pay area of the sites at Roughstock:

1) The pay area would have special content, contests and features not available to the free areas of the site

2) The pay area would not have ANY advertisements

3) The pay area would cost around $3-$4 per month and would cover access to the entire site

For those of you who do not want ads, would you pay $3-$4 a month for access to a pay area with more content and no ads?

E-mail me privately if you have other ideas, or an answer to my question: rodeo@roughstock.com

The site should be free!

Well although some of us regulars would stick around; I think that charging members will have a serious affect on the membership! Not only are there many free sites to choose from, but there are many under age members who would not have access to credit cards or checks in order to pay! That's why I paid outta my own pocket to get the ads off our site!

I think it's a really bad idea! JMHO

Interesting.
Considering the fact that most members or future members would have no way to pay, I'd have to stick with the pop ups. Even if they are as annoying as they are. That's jmo.

Thnks for the response Doug.

Personally I cant stand popups on webpages, although you get them that often on the web these days I just tend to close them automatically as soon as they open up, I never even wait for them to load to see whats in the new windows. The banner ads on sites I dont really mind because they arent too annoying and unlike the popups, I actually see the banners because I`m looking at the actual page of the site that they are used on..

Got room for me in your unruly mob with the flaming sticks Marine? ;)

That said though.. I wouldnt object to a pay area with exclusive content like competions, members offers etc.. The forums and shania.net site itself would still be there for all to access, you would just get even more on the pay site and if enough people visited then we would be able to run without the popups completely.. Considering how little revenue Doug gets from the banner ads though we would probably need quite a high level of interest in a pay section for it to make getting rid of the popups an affordable option..

One thing you may not realise is that all the sites hosted on Roughstock's servers are done so at no financial cost to the webmaster so Doug doesnt make any money from the sites he hosts on his servers.. Thats why we all run the banner ads. Personally if it meant no popups (and I was still running Shania.org) I would gladly pay Doug for his hosting services, I doubt anyone else on Roughstock would object to doing that either as the hosting costs would still be cheaper than most other companies on the net..

Just a thought..

I'm sorry, however, I feel that if it's what's needed to keep web sites like this and mine alive; so be it.

I know the Internet economy isn't what it was a year ago, but if this is what it has come down to in order to offer this FREE service to you and your e-peers, what the heck.

Seein' lots of popups lately here - I was on this morning for a while and my popup blocker showed 164 popups blocked and this afternoon in less than an hour there have been 42 popups blocked - if you do not have a popup blocker I do not know how you can stand it!

I'm sure she doesn't but you have to pay to visit her forums: http://www.fanclub.shaniatwain.com/ :p

Just do as Marine suggests and you won't have to worry about the pop-ups here or anywhere else. ;)
