GAY NETWORK COULD DEBUT WITHIN A YEAR
Showtime And MTV Would Develop It For Viacom; Others Considering, Too

By J. Max Robins

MTV and Showtime are in "serious discussions" about launching a gay channel, according to several sources familiar with the project.

The would-be developers are part of the Viacom media empire that includes CBS, UPN, Nickelodeon and VH1. However, they're not the only big-time players considering a gay network. According to industry sources, there have been such discussions at HBO, USA Networks, as well as at Rainbow Media, the programming arm of Cablevision, which runs Bravo and AMC. But the proposed MTV/Showtime venture appears to be closer to reality, although both parties declined comment.

"It's being given real consideration," says a Viacom insider, who indicates such a network could launch within the next year. [As early as March, Showtime may begin a trial run with a four-hour gay programming block on its companion service Showtime Too.] Little wonder such a network may launch soon. An already successful Canadian model exists: PrideVision, which launched last year.

"Look at the success Showtime has with programming like Queer as Folk," the insider says. "And MTV has a long history of being out in front on gay issues and marketing to that community."

Both networks have been pioneers in bringing gay storylines to television, long before Will & Grace became prime-time players. Real World, MTV's long-running hit reality series has included gay participants since it began in 1992, as have the game-show Singled Out and the late-night teen soap Undressed.

Showtime got into the game even earlier. In 1984, the premium cable network launched Brothers, the first gay-themed TV series. It also has offered Tales of the City, a recurring miniseries based on the Armistead Maupin novels about gay and straight life in San Francisco. Queer as Folk, the drama based on a hit British series, recently began its second season. The show credited with boosting Showtime's audience.

"It's about time somebody had gone after that audience with a network," says Tom Wolzien, senior media analyst of the investment firm Sanford C. Bernstein & Company. "It's an important segment of the audience that has traditionally been under-served. The money is certainly there to support it."

According to the marketing publication Brandweek, research suggests that six percent of the adult population, roughly 15 million people, identifies itself as gay or lesbian, with combined annual spending in the $250-$350 billion range. Major advertisers including Miller Brewing and General Motors, have increasingly targeted gay and lesbian consumers, with select commercials and print ads.

"Whoever does this could win big," says Randy Barbato, co-president of World of Wonder, an independent production company that created The RuPaul Show for VH1.

MTV and Showtime are undecided if the proposed gay network will be advertiser supported like MTV or a commercial-free pay service like Showtime. Some industry observers believe the latter might minimize resistance from anti-gay groups against cable systems that would carry the network as part of a basic cable package. "You wouldn't have the content issues that you're inevitably faced with if you go the ad-supported route," Wolzien says.

Programming for the gay channel may include existing and original programs, including gay-hosted talk and music video shows, relationship game shows and news.

Gee, thanks for the info Marine.

So this is probably another channel I'll watch to see what's on and then surf right over it ... like the Home Shopping Network, Home and Garden TV, PAX TV, CBN, Lifetime, The Comedy Channel (except for The Man Show), The Disney Channel, QVC (Whatever That Means) etc etc

I don't see anything wrong with it. We have channels for practically everything else.

ALL the channels are heterosexual, so why not have one that isn't?

Hopefully, this will educate people about homosexuality. :p Most people who are against it, actually know nothing about it.

All of what you say is true enough. But given a choice, I'll choose.

Well it is quaint and so nice that people are free enough to do that, although I sure as hell wouldn't encourage homosexuality on TV.
When kids see that it will be a big influence on them, because TV is a big influenece on most kids.
And it is in the Good Book (The Bible) that you shouldn't have sex or make love to your own sex. (Or something).
No offence to anyone here by no means, JMO, and most people I do know like that are great people.
I just don't encourage it for a TV channel.

But I will quote "Mr. Floppy from 'Unhappliy ever after'"

Well ya see Jack...
When two Women make love...it's a beautiful thing.

But when two men make love...that's just SICK.

If we take off homosexuality, then we should definitly take off all the violence and other sexual stuff that's on the TV. I think violence has a greater impact on children than homosexuality.

I used to think homosexuality was very gross and against the Bible until I became educated about the whole thing. My sister came out of the closet when I was 15 years old, and I've learned so much since then! I realized that I was against something that I didn't really know that much about. All I knew was that it was against the bible (however that's even up for interpretation).
Well, I guess I'm just a very open minded person. :p

We don't need to get into religion, because that's a never ending conversation. :o

Everybody is welcomed to have their own opinion, even if I don't agree. :p I'll never argue over a person's opinion, because it's a great thing to have that freedom.

On a personal note: I will never teach my children that homosexuality is wrong, just a different way of living. I don't want my children to grow up with that prejudice and hate that so many people have today. I want my children to respect all lifestyles, along with the many ethnic groups.

As Garth Brooks says in his song: "We're free to love anyone we choose, where this world is big enough for all different views"

I'm just wondering... what would a gay TV channel be like? I mean, gay talk shows, gay movies, gay people, gay everything? Are there enough gay movies (and I'm not talking about shag movies with lesbians in them :p) to fill a whole channel?

Well anyway, I would obviously be the last person minding such a channel.

Oh and I agree with everything Angela said. :D

Just another way for the media companies to target market and make money......

In the early days of TV "demagraphic" programming was limited to timeslots now with more channels, people to watch and more time to watch there will be a channel / network for every demagraphic that has a dollar to spend.

Manu's point is well taken... how much programming is there currently?

Most networks startout with a few shows repeating them every
x or y amount of hours.....

I'd bet there will be more once a network/channel is created

"If you build it they will come"

Well, I've never seen a gay channel before, so I don't know what to expect either. One thing that I was surpised about was the number of gay movies out there . . . . their's alot!:uhh:

Those of you who live in the US: You know how NBC has the peacock? Well, I bet the gay channel will use the rainbow as their mascot. :p

Marine. . .so what are you saying? :uhh:

This is how my sister explained it to me. . . . .

"Imagine the entire world was gay, but you were straight. What would you do?" Would you keep your mouth shut and live a lie for the rest of your life, or would you let your choice my known?

This is what it's like for a gay person today, they must make that choice. Either live a lie and be "accepted" or be themselves and become discriminated against.

Since a large portion of our society descriminates against them, they kinda find ways of expressing their pride. . . so that's why we have the raindbow flag.

Marine, please tell me you have a tolerant, open mind? We have enough uneducated and close minded people in this world already.

Today was Martin Luther King day here in the USA. Let's take a moment to reflect.

There is often a difference between what a person says and what they really believe. It is better to see what people do than to listen to what they say.

People might express being upset about other groups of people which disturb them, but they don't always act on what they say. Of course when they do act, they generally act badly and then it is time for the rest of us to step up and step in.

It's a pretty big world. And there is enough room in it for a lot of different people.

The world is big enough to live in peace, but the world is not big enough for intolerance.

Amen brother!

I will never understand why people say things, but believe something else. It's unfortunate that people can't express their true feelings, without feeling obligated toward society's "expected" views.

nothin' wrong with that- i personally love gay people, one of my best friends is. Don't know about the rest of us southern people...people in the south like me who have been here a long time are pretty darn rooted in their beliefs and traditions. Oh well, everyone has to change sometime :)
