I saw "The Others" two days ago (which is a really GREAT movie btw!!) and I was wondering about the following thing:

Nicole Kidman played a British woman, so of course she talked in a British accent. So did Angie in "Tomb Raider" or Renée Zellweger in "Bridget Jones' diary". But they're all not British, so isn't it difficult for them to speak in a British accent?? Don't they have to learn it first?

I'm sorry if it's a stupid question, but I have really no idea about that! LOL!

I saw a program once about someone from England who wanted to be a actress in America and she had to learn to speak with an american accent:)

The only slight problem I have with American actors/actresses who potray British characters is that they nearly always speak with one of two accents, either the posh upper class, plumb in the mouth "typical British accent", or alternatively a London accent. We really need US directors and producers to be a bit more inventive when writing British characters into their scripts, lol :D

Annette, I`m not sure if its the person you're talking about but Catherine Zeta-Jones has adopted an American accent in pretty much every US film I`ve seen her in. Makes me wonder how many people realise she's actually Welsh, lol.

Oh well... :)

To answer the original question, it's very easy to speak in a British accent! :p I do a good British accent, if I do say so myself! :p lol

Nicole is Australian, right? Well, Mel Gibson is Australian, he hired a coach to teach him how to speak with an American accent so he could expand his acting career. A lot of actors & actresses do it. lol I know that Rene Zellweger spent some time in England to learn how to speak in the accent good.

Nope, I wasn't talking about Catherine Zeta-Jones I don't think it was somebody famous, but as I said it's a long time since I saw that program.

I saw the term "American accent" come up and I'm curious to know what part of the country would you find an "American accent" in? There are so many different accents in the US.

I thought the "American" accent is the ones the national news anchors use. And they all sound the same in spite of the fact that Tom Brokaw is from South Dakota, Peter Jennings is from Canada, and Dan Rather is from Texas.

Can you imagine how much fun they would make of each other is they talked like their mothers and the people they grew up with ... like the rest of us do?

When members of Congress are speaking to these guys, they at least still sound like they come from somewhere more interesting than a TV booth.

Actors and actresses hire some vocal coach to teach them to speak with an accent. I've always wondered why movies don't just hire someone British for a British character. I guess sometimes a non-British actor/actress is perfect for the character.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was being interviewed by Barbara Walters once, and Barbara asked Catherine to speak in all the accents she knew. It was really cool listening to her answer a question in all her English accents (she'd speak several sentences in each).
