View Full Version : Thoughts On The Shania episode of Driven

Hey All:)

What did you all think of Driven? I came away with a new perspective of Shania in a way. I always think of her as the soft, elegant woman she is today. Seeing her as Eilleen, the tough little scrapper was interesting:) The word "driven" definitely describes Shania. Anyone who ever credited Mutt as the driving force in their professional relationship has it backwards;) Behind that perfect and angelic smile is a woman of steel. What did you guys think?

I agree. I thought it was way better than BTM. More "realistic" if ya ask me.
I'm also glad that they premiered the show using Shania's story.

OK, so I'll post my little review in this thread too.

That was a great show.

She gave me goosebumps listening to her sing Tanya Tucker's Texas When I Die.

And she tugged on my heart with Over The Rainbow from Deerhurst.

And the goosebumps again with From This Moment On.

Ah, Shania. You are good for me. Thanks.

Now I have to get ready for the replay in 38 mintues.

I didn't see "DRIVEN" cause I live in Canada!

Did the show have new info on Shania and Mutt(how they met, their wedding)
Who did they interview(family, friends)? Anything interesting?

Could you guys post some details on the show here! :D

Lots of sound bites, and quick shots of photos from the early days. From Longshot members, Mary Baily, Luke Lewis and Norro Wilson and others whose names I can't remember. They even got the guy from Poland who managed at Deerhurst; the one Robbin Eggar had trouble finding.

I got a chuckle out of the part where the wife of the producer "almost threw Eilleen out of the car" after they drove from Nashville to Toronto. Things did not go well between Eilleen and her on that trip. It was Eilleen's first trip to Nashville and I got a kick out of the way she just went up and introduced hersef to Dolly Parton and others. (You Go Girl!) But they went back to Canada without a contract.

The parts I liked best were Eilleen singing fairly extended on camera at Deerhurst and the TV talent show. Somewhere Over the Rainbow for Deerhurst, and Texas When I Die for her premier on TV on the talent show. (Maybe you old hands at this Forum already have heard those, but I haven't heard that extent before.)

If you don't know it already, I'm an old Tanya Tucker fan, and the comparisons the show made between the two of them gave me quite a thrill.

Gotta go. The replay is beginning.

I missed it, of course with my busy schedule I'll only be able to watch it during the weekend!

Can somebody tell me if it'll be on this weekend and what time it starts? :uhh:

I loved to watch her sing, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow!" :p I wish she'd release a song that has that much vocal power! :D

According to musicstation.com it's supposed to air again today at 6 PM and on Saturday at 6 PM. You may want to check the schedule on VH1.com to make sure though, Music Station's TV schedules have been wrong before.

It was fascinating stuff. Eilleen is a tough, strong, determined woman. "She doesn't do anything she doesn't want to do" ; "She had opinions"; "She knew what she wanted"; "She has a steel rod down her back" and on and on and on. Although she has a "Barbie Doll" image, she's far from that. Fascinating woman, no one's puppet. And it leads me to think of the new album. She'll turn it in when she's ready, and not one moment sooner. I think Mercury knows what they're dealing with. They've got to wait it out, as we all do.

A few other things stood out: her devotion to her dad. You see why she kept the "Twain". The recollection of how strong she was at the funeral home, after her parent's death; holding everybody together. And it was great to see John Brannan again, and to see footage of him, Shania, and an oh-so-young Toby Keith, on the Triple Play tour. I also think, despite their difficult parting, that Mary Bailey still has deep feelings for Shania. You can just tell. I do wish that they let us hear more of her singing, and wouldn't talk over it. She belted then, like she doesn't belt now. I wish she would do more of that. All in all, a wonderful show. I sure miss her. Can't wait to see how the next chapters in this story unfold.

I just loved the Driven show. It definitely portrayed the strong side side of Shania. I loved her performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I, too, cracked up at the story about the car trip back from Nashville to Timmins. I think that story tells alot about Shania. I'm sure it was an uncomfortable time for the poor guy, but I see the funny side of it.

The whole theme of the show was Shania's strong personality, but did anyone else pick up on the fact that she was strong when she needed to be, but also had a need to be vulnerable. She couldn't be that way to her family when her parents died. She couldn't be that way with the Nashville brass. During the time that she needed to be strongest with her family, she didn't have the oppurtunity to appear vulnerable to them. Those were obviously hard times for her. She apperantly would show up at Deerhurst crying at times. She needed to be strong and she was.
But to me, there was something missing! A person that she could trust in; a person that she could be vulnerable with; an oppurtunity to NOT be the Rock that WE see. That person of course is Mutt!! It brought tears to my eyes when they said that Mutt was the person that she was able to share that side of her life. Until then, I don't think she had that privelege. I think the song the Women in Me sums up the whole message of the Driven show.

On a different note, my wife, who is not a Shania fan, enjoyed the show. She was impressed with Shania's range and vocal strength in Over the Rainbow. Prior to that, she thought Shania's talents were probably limited since most of her songs are very simple and have a small range. Maybe she'll become a fan yet!

I hope her new album takes advantage of the range and strength that Shania's voice does have.

After just finishing the book by Robin Eggar and then seeing the episode of "Driven," I too have a little different perspective of Shania. :) I loved the show, songs I have never heard her sing and pictures. I just think that they could have finished it. They basically stopped the show after "The Woman in Me."

If Hollywood ever remakes "The Wizard of Oz", I think Shania should be on the soundtrack with Somewhere Over the Rainbow!

I wish she'd have that song on her next album, perhaps just a sliver of it.

I reckon they wanted 'Driven' to be primarily about how the artists were "Driven" to sucess. What made them so driven to get to where they are now. I thought it seemed incomplete too. But now I think that it's better this way. VH1 already has enough bio shows as it is. lol I think just focussing on the artists' DRIVE is cool.

i adored the episode of "Driven", but why in the world didn't they mention Come On Over . . . at all.
but the show was very good. it focused on several important parts in Shania's life that you don't really hear about anywhere else.

I really enjoyed DRIVEN. It showed a side of Shania we've never seen before...how very strong and determined she was when it came to her career. I especially enjoyed the photos of Shania when she was very young and when she was in the band LONGSHOT.

I think Shania's new album will be coming out sooner than we think. In DRIVEN, they showed Luke Lewis, President of Mercury Records, being interviewed. It looked pretty recent which means he might have endorsed the episode. Maybe this is a prelude to Shania's new album and they don't want us to forget her 'cuz something new will be coming out real soon. Hope so!!!:supwink: :supwink:

The only one I hadn't seen before was the one where she was fixing her headpiece & veil. The pictures looked grainy. Remember, the Star printed them. It looked like they were photographed right from the tabloid. Of course, Shania never released any wedding pictures with Mutt in them. So, the question still is, "who sold them to the Star?"

I finally got to see "Driven"!! I feel like I'm the last one on here to see it!:p

I totally loved it! It showed many pictures that I've never seen before.
Plus, it showed the tough side of Shania when she was just starting out. No other TV biography showed that side quite as much as this one did!

I love it how Shania knew what she wanted and was so determined to do it her way! I admire her for that so much.
Despite of what people thought of her, she still stuck to her guns!

I love a strong woman!
