Here's a question. I think that both George Strait and Shania are the two greatest performers of all time. Today, I bought George's new CD, which has "Murder on Music Row" on it. It talks about how real country music has died and has been replaced with rock and roll. The song is good, and the concept is true. But it pretty much sounds like a slam on artists like Garth, Shania, Ty Herndon, SHeDAISY, etc. Has anybody else heard it, and what do you think?

Hi everyone!
I have heard Murder On Music Row on a radio station I listen to. I am not sure what to think about it. I have only heard it once but I am not sure about it. I absolutely LOVE George Strait and I like Alan Jackson too. I will let you know my opinion when I hear it a couple more times.Goodnight

I feel that saying that country is dead is ridiculous. It like other styles of music including rock and roll have just progressed. Look at Elvis and then look at the Beatles and then look at Dave Matthews. There is a true change in styles between all of them and I feel that is what country is doing now, changing and evolving NOT being lost! In Shania's case on the other hand she has blended rock and country together which makes her style of music in a league of its own and it is GREAT!

I certainly don't think that country is dying. I mean look at the Dixie Chicks, their new album, FLY, is pure country. So I don't think country music is dying!

Hey Little Shania, long time no hear http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif I hope everything is going well for u http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif

On the issue of country music dying, I wish some of these country music insiders would quit their whinning about how Shania and Garth have sullied their precious genre with their innovations. Shania and Garth have helped to raise standards in this genre. I think it has to do with professional jealousies. After all, Shania and Garth are no longer just "country" acts they are world class. Naysayers like Clint Black and Vince Gill are nothing but an embarassment to their industry. Instead of focusing on what they preceive to be the shortcomings of others they need to focus on keeping their mouths shut!

I have heard the song a couple of times, and I think its a good song. But saying that Country music is dead thats stupid, the only thing that has happened is that some Country artists(Like Shania and Garth)has made a turn with music. They have made it with a blend of rock and country, and just look how many people who enjoy listening to it.
I really dont think country music will die that easily.

Okay...I have to reply to the last post (not to start a fight and nothing personal) because I am a huge George fan. In no way is he jealous of Shania. In fact, he has asked Shania to tour with him on the George Strait Country Music Festival. Her response was that she would do so if she had new material available. The song is just that--a song. Lots of songs have messages (e.g., Goodbye Earl, Independence Day, even Black Eyes, Blue Tears). It increases awareness of what is going on. That is the same thing that other artists do in their songs. George is often critized for doing the same thing in every song. This time, he took a different approach. I just don't think that he (and Alan Jackson) should be critized for expressing his First Amendment right.

I heard the song on THE OPRY last weekend. I think it's going to take a couple more times before I can say what I think of it. I still haven't heard the Jackson/Strait version. It does get me to wondering, though. How in the name of Nashville can a radio refuse to play a song "because it's just too country."?

it varies totally in just what the contry is supposed to play. if it's a pop station, they won't play much country, in fear of losing listeners...i've dabbled in some radio....that's our reasoning.

The song Murder on Music Row is Not a slam against Shania, Garth, or anyone other country artist who has crossed over into the pop/rock arena. It is simply a reminder to the country music industry to remain true to it's country roots and not lose sight of the music that is the heart, from which this great nation and it's people were born and bred and built. After all, that's why they call it C-O-U-N-T-R-Y http://www.shania.net/shaniaforum/smile.gif
