View Full Version : I wondered if you could help me a bit?
I'm doing this project at school, it's about different school systems. This girl i know in england was supposed to write something and give to me, but she's working and she's really busy, so she didn't find the time. It would be of GREAT help if you would take a few or more minutes to write a bit about the schools you have gone to. (Annette, you don't have to do this again :p ;) ) Especially if you went to school in England, but it would also help much to get information from other countries aswell.
What i would like you to write about, is things like: at what ages did you start at the different schools, how much home work did you have at the different ages, how's an ordinary school week at the different schools and ages (subjects, when do you start school in the mornings, and when do you finish....), how many days a week did you have to go to schools at the different schools, did you go to a public school....... It would be of great help even if you don't have time to write that much.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll write my lines of enquiry so you'll know a little more what kind of information i need:
What are the school systems like in the different countries?
What are the main similarities and differences?
Does any country seem to demand more of its pupils?
Opinions of a student from each country.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you take the time to write something:
Thank you!!!!!!!!
I just know school in France and in Brazil....does it help?
If so, I can start writing about to help u :p

Well seeing as I work in a Primary School I can help you :D
Okay you go into Nursery School at the age of 3 or 4, the school I work at the Nursery has a class in the morning for one group who then go home and then a different group comes in the afternoon.
Then the next step is Primary School, you start off in Reception (age 5) and go up from there to Year 1, then to year 2 then to year 3 etc till year six (age 11) when you move on to secondry school, where you enter at year seven and work your way up till year 11 (age 16) where you do your GCSE exams and leave school.
I'll have to get back to you on the rest of the infomation as its five years since I left school and I can't remember what it was like off hand lol But I do have some notes on the school I work at which I could put u here if you want? When do you need to hand this in? I can get you some really good stuff but not till Wendsday.

at what ages did you start at the different schools
We start junior kindergarten at age 4. The elementary schools vary in how long you stay in them. Some are JK to grade 5 (age 10), or to grade 6 (age 11) or do grade 8 (age 13). You start middle school at age 11 in grade 6, or junior high in grade 7 (age 12) (if your school went up to grade 6). Then you go into high school at age 14 (grade 9) until grade 12 (age 18). Post-secondary education is after that.
how much home work did you have at the different ages
In kindergarten, you'd have no homework except for maybe show and tell. In the middle-elementary grades (1-3) you might have a math sheet or something. In grades 4 & 5, you do a lot of book reports, and little projects, math handouts, etc. In middle school, you start to get more work and complex projects- maybe 1/2 an hour to 1 hour a night. High school is a little more. You have to spend a lot of time studying for tests.
how's an ordinary school week at the different schools and ages
In elementary school you get recess once or twice a day. School lets out at 3:45 in public schools. Middle schools get out earlier, between 3:00 and 3:20. In high school, you get out at around 3:40, but your lunch is longer.
how many days a week did you have to go to schools at the different schools
5 days a week, Monday-Friday
did you go to a public school
I went to a public school, but there are also private schools, semi-private schools, french schools, Catholic schools, and speciality schools. (art, phys ed, etc)
Hope it helped! :D

at what ages did you start at the different schools
At the age of 2 years usually kids go to what we call a creche, that's for personal and social grow, it's not a real school but more a practise for real school, kids play there, it's the parents own choice or they go to creche or not.
At the age of 4 we go to kleuterschool( kindergarten ) till we're 6.
Then we go to basisschool till we're 12 or 13, depends on when you're born.
Then we go to voortgezet onderwijs 4 years.
In voortgezet onderwijs you can choose from different educations depending on your interests.
After that you can study further.
You have to go to school untill you're 17.
how much home work did you have at the different ages
That depends on the school, some schools give a lot of homework and some not or a bit.
how's an ordinary school week at the different schools and ages
In creche you go mostly 2 mornings.
In kleuterschool 5 days, monday till friday.
In basisschool 5 days too.
In voortgezet onderwijs too and when you study further 5 days or 1 day and 4 days working.
I will write more later.
Thanks!!:D
You guys helped a lot! Hopefully I'll get something about France and England too...?

Thanks soo much for helping me out here!!! Wasn't Ben's info helpful?:uhh:
Oh yeah, of course! But he wrote that he could write more on/after wednesday. :) since it's been a while since he went to school he said he didn't remember. So I was hoping he would put the notes he talked about on here. :D Maybe a bit more aboout the subjects and stuff.
You really saved my project, everyone!!:D
I really mean it, i wouldnt have managed to write this project without your help. its completely hopeless cuz of that concussion i had. i still can't consentrate or remember things. So i have to read something about 5 times before i know most of what i've just read. And if i read or write, or sit in front of the computer too much i get a head ache. And "too much" isn't THAT long, either. I tried taking an english test yesterday, it was an entire day, writing an essay. I still have a head ache after that
But with your help, i think i can write at least an okey project.

Ben
I know I’m a bit late, but I’ll post this anyway. Around here in Romania we have a slightly different education system than the one working in the West. It is mainly reminiscent of the old system, the communist one, and people are trying to change it these days. But like anything so fundamentally implemented in generations’ conscience, it is rather hard to do that and we seem to be moving in circles, to say the least. But that’s another story.
Anyway, the communist model was in my opinion something inclined more towards the quantity of information, rather than the quality of it, mainly due to the nature of the communist society, broadening people’s horizon wasn’t part of the doctrine, on the contrary, it was considered a dangerous phenomenon since it reduced the potential power of control over them. On the other hand there was this general idea that a person is superior to others if he knows more than the others.
The pre-college education system here is more or less similar to the ones described by all of you. The thing is that an average pupil here knows a lot more information, especially technical one, than a student in the West. For example at math we do in the 9th grade the same thing a someone in the US does in the 12th grade. So basically the knowledge you get in math, science, history, etc. will prove somehow superior to the knowledge developed in the West when you finished high-school. The downside is the lack of development of artistic and creative skills, we have a relatively small exposure to the universal literature, culture and artistry. I’m talking about the guidance the school should provide, you can read and learn all you like on your free will. So the system is rather rigid, teaches a lot of things many of you think you may not need to know, a lot of them are purely theoretical with very little practical implementation. It does not provide a flexible way to develop your own personality and to follow your own path from an earlier age.
It is true however that there are may people who can compensate the lack of guidance the school should provide with their own skills, so they develop their education and system of values and also acquire all the massive info the school gives them, which hands them a great advantage later in life. But not everybody is like that, hence the high percentage of school dropping and even analphabetism.
This rigid system leads to problems for many students as they go to college, since the teaching system is different from high-school, and in many ways this is where the pace of studying is getting slower, instead of being increased as it is in the West.
I realize what I wrote here isn’t in the exact coordinates described above, but I thought you might want some insight on how the system works(or doesn’t work) in other parts of the globe, and for what reasons. I could write more, but I’m tired and many are already sleeping after reading my first paragraph, as usual.;)
Thanks!! I think i have enough material now:D:D:D:D:D:D
YAY! finally... Then i just have to write the damn thing (the rest of my speech)
