View Full Version : A Bit of A Disappointment

Well, this is the time of year when the US TV Networks unveil their Fall Schedules. I've been particularly interested in the Music specials that are planned. Not much from ABC. NBC has signed Tim & Faith. Today was CBS' turn. Of course, that's the network that Shania's last two specials were on. So far, they have only announced new music specials for Celine & U2. (I've posted the details in the Music Scene.) If Shania was going to use TV to promote the new album, she would be on the list. So, it's a disappointment. I'm sure things could change, but these things are usually planned in advance. So, right now, it doesn't look good for a network special. I'll post anything new that might develop.

...when you are right you are right but let's hope you are wrong and CBS is keeping an ace up its sleeve!
Disappointing... I know... :scowl: But if they knew Shania was going to be up and kicking again, they probably would keep an ace up their sleeve.
It's still very early though. They could plan it at a later date.:)

Not necessarily Claudia. Usually, TV specials are announced at the discretion of the artist at a time to maximize viewing interest. What is being announced now is the basic CBS fall schedule plus a couple of specials with artists that were contracted previously. Today's announcement in no way reflects the network's total 'special' line-up for the year.
Nor is their any guarantee that Shania will return to CBS (unless she is still under contract with them, which is improbable). It would be to Shania's advantage to negotiate with any network around the time of her album's release to give her maximuml leverage in the TV deal (networks also respond to hype). Once an artist contracts with a network to do a special, they then negotiate for the air date. Historically, the dates for Shania's specials have been decided and announced about 75 - 90 days before airing.

You make a good point. But what I was thinking of was an album launch. Shania has been out of the public eye for some time. I believe we sometimes forget that the public at large may not be as concerned about her as we are. In recent months, two artists in a similar situation, Garth & Celine, have both used TV specials to launch both a new album and a return to performing. It was my thought that Shania would do the same. Even Tim & Faith, who have not really been away, will use TV to launch their new albums. If the album is indeed coming out this Fall, I think she's missing a good bet by not doing a special. Also, I seem to have a memory that Shania had a 3-special deal with CBS. It was thought, in what seems like a lifetime ago, that there would be a Xmas special to coincide with the release of a Xmas album. Of course, neither materialized. She may owe CBS one more.

I think you are right about the third special as I also remember rumors about a special that never materialized. Specials, however, are best used to maximize the momentum of an artist's album after the momentum is created. I expect Mercury is already working with CMT and VH1, for example, in lining up good stuff for her. I beleive both Celine's and Garth's situations are different from Shania's in that they both made a lot of noise about "retiring" a couple of years ago. I guess they don't know what "retirement" means. And I certainly I wouldn't use Celine as an example -- alluding to her constant presence, wasn't she recently accused by the media at one of her "comeback appearances" of having "never left"? :smirk:
I know Shania is busily working on her album and I am sure that whatever she decides to do to promote her album,we will not be disappointed!

I don't recall Celine ever saying she was retiring. If I remember correctly, she said she's taking a year off, to take her of her husband, who was ill at the time.

Yeah, I'd be happy with "just" the album this fall too. I'd just wish they'd at least tell us the estimated release date, so I can start counting the minutes... errrr... days! ;)

That's just a smart-*** media quote. They can get nasty where Celine is concerned. There was no "constant presence." Truth of the matter is that until the Sept 11th benefit, there were no public appearances and no new songs. Granted, she didn't go underground like Shania seems to have done, but she certainly wasn't performing and recording. She said she was going to take two years off to take care of her husband and have a child, and that's what she did. :)

I'm with you, SHANIANUTS!! I think CBS is keeping an ace up its' sleeve!! I have no doubt there will be a SHANIA special in their agenda, which would be especially beneficial to SHANIA in launching her new album. I bet this is just SHANIA's marketing strategy to keep it under wrap until it gets closer to the release of the album.

These shows are for fall though, right? So, what if Shania has a CHRISTMAS special planned?!?! That would be sooo cool! :)

I think its way too early for shania or her managment to start booking a date for a concert. In Erich's post he said that the album was not yet completed, and that it looked to be out november. Things could change...just like we all have seen them. We thought before that we would be getting this album in late 2000 or 2001 if i remember correctly. She had it planned that way at first.. Things change, so it is early to book a date, when there is no clear date for the cd. Much less announce it to the public. If she DOES have one planned, and releses that she is going to have one...imagine the disapointment if the timing is misjudged and the album is needed to be released later. And the she would have to publicly denounce the concert. That wouldnt do wonders to her return to the spotlight.

Another Shania Special yeah that would be awesome! We could all go for that. I know (like many of you) I was so glad when the folks at Mercury released "The Specials DVD". I of course taped them when they aired on TV (like you all must have) However I have watched my tape so often i'm shocked it still plays. Of course with DVD's you don't have that problem..and thank goodness for that! lol:) I know when i saw that Garth was doing his own specials I thought : "Shania, where are you??..we miss you!" I am sure we will have new specials in the future. Shania i'm sure will Rock This Country... right out of this world fans will as before, rave that "She Does Impress Us Much" and that to fans and the music industry she's "Still The One"
