If you want to know about the Carolina's, Matt would probably be the person to talk to. :)
The very famous Mertyle Beach is in South Carolina! It's one of the top vacation destinations along the East Coast!
It's a very famous beach in the United States, it's been in many movies and is a major tourist magnet.
If you want a nice beach, I'd say Florida or the Carolina's. . . perhaps California, but I've never been there. :smirk:
Then again. . I was born & raised in a one horse town in Illinois, so what do I know about beaches? :p

I'm from South Carolina (Matt's in North Carolina) and the beaches here are great. Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, etc., they're all very beautiful.
Here are a few websites that might help you w/ SC beaches.

What beaches? North Carolina alone has over 300 miles of coast line which equals a whole lot of beach area.
Like Angela said, if you're looking for a tourist-type area, Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) is the place to go. Lots of things to do like amusement parks, water parks, shows/concerts (House of Blues (http://hob.com/venues/clubvenues/myrtlebeach/), Alabama Theater (http://www.alabama-theatre.com/), Midieval Times (http://www.medievaltimes.com/SC_realm.htm), Legends In Concert), shopping (http://www.broadwayatthebeach.com/welcome.html) and LOTS of people. If you're looking for other people your age, Myrtle Beach is a big spot for people in their teens/20's. Another cool city along the South Carolina coast is Charleston. It's almost the exact opposite of Myrtle Beach because it's an old historic city but it is very beautiful. You might find it a little boring but it is a nice place to relax after all the hustle and bustle in Myrtle Beach.
Now on to my home state, North Carolina. Like I said above, NC has a lot of coast line and a lot of beaches. The main attraction of the NC coast are the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks are a 125 mile long chain of barrier islands right off the mainland. Attractions along the Outer Banks include Jockeys Ridge State Park (http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject/jockeysridge/index.html) (The tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. Activities include hiking, hang gliding, sandboarding, etc.), the Elizabethan Gardens (A living memorial to the first English colonists in America and the "lost colony"), the Wright Brothers National Memorial (http://www.nps.gov/wrbr/) and a number of great lighthouses (Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (http://www.nps.gov/caha/), Currituck Beach Lighthouse (http://www.itpi.dpi.state.nc.us/caroclips/currituck.html) (on the Northern edge of the Outer Banks where you can also see wild horses roaming the area), Bodie Island Lighthouse (http://www.itpi.dpi.state.nc.us/caroclips/bodie.html), Ocracoke Lighthouse (http://www.itpi.dpi.state.nc.us/caroclips/ocracoke.html), Cape Lookout Lighthouse (http://www.itpi.dpi.state.nc.us/caroclips/LOOKOUT.html), Bald Head Lighthouse (http://www.itpi.dpi.state.nc.us/caroclips/bald.html) and Oak Island Lighthouse (http://members.tripod.com/~lighthouse1998/oakisland.htm)). Other popular things to do at the Outer Banks are fishing, surfing, windsurfing, camping or just hanging out on the beach and playing in the ocean. :)
My favorite spot on the Outer Banks is Ocracoke Island (http://www.ocracokeisland.com/). It's an island only accessible by ferry and it has very little development (enough to find a place to stay and eat but not a lot else) but it's a very beautiful island with a fishing village at one end. It was also a favorite hideout spot for the pirate Blackbeard so it has a little history to it as well. :p
If you want to know anything else about North Carolina or our coast, just ask. The Outer Banks are a favorite travel destination of mine. ;)
Here's a good site about NC and the coast: http://www.visitnc.com/cst/

I imagine the water off the coast of the Carolinas is about as clean as the water you'd find off the coast of any other state in the US. As far as water clarity, the water's clearer in some spots than others. Your not going to find anything as clear as you would on say an island way out in the ocean because there's so much water fed into the ocean from rivers on the coast. That's why the water isn't always very clear but like I said before, there are some really nice spots for clear blue water.
Below is an image from "Figure Eight" island off the NC coast. Check out the white sands and blue water there!
