R & B singer R. Kelly was indicted on 21 counts of child pornography by a grand jury Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators have been looking at a videotape that purports to show the Grammy award winner having sex with a 14 year old girl.
Kelly has been a chart topper since his first album "Born into the 90s" which sold 1 million copies. His later albums sold millions more. He is known for his singles "I Believe I Can Fly" and "I Am the Greatest".
In August of 1994 R. Kelly married singer Aaliyah in the Chicago area. That marriage was dissolved six months later after it came to light that she was only 15 when she married the 27 year old Kelly.
Kelly was later accused of having inappropriate relationships with several other teenage girls. Over the past few years, Kelly paid legal settlements to three young women who sued or threatened to sue him over sexual relationships.
Last February the videotape was sent to the Chicago Sun Times. The paper says the FBI determined the tape was not a forgery. In March, bootleg copies of the Kelly sex video started showing up across the country.
If convicted of the child pornography charge, Kelly could go to prison for up to 15 years and be fined $100,000.
Chicago police have been investigating accusations that Kelly was having sex with the 14 year old. The girl and her parents denied the charges.
Kelly has repeatedly denied charges he had sex with underaged girls, and said they had shady reputations. Kelly told BET, "If people out there have a tape of me and they're saying it's me and a young girl, a minor . . . then they're sadly mistaken or they're lying."
