THE SOFT SHELL OF LOVE

My heart is a wave breaking on shore
Part of me isn't so sure
Whether to dive into that wave
Or let my tears fall
Like rain where we lie

Darkness is dancing with the sunlight now
Finding us naked side by side
Scooping up eternity
Watching it slide
Past the palms of our hands
Through the cup of our lives

Eternity watching
As we reach for each other
Like an ocean wave trying
To become one with the shore

Always receding
Pulling away
Scouting out the next
Breaker to ride

My heart is a wave breaking on shore
Part of me isn't so sure
Whether to dive into that wave
Or to pull you so close
You can never leave

As I bend down to lift
Your sand to my hand
I'm Hungry for what, I don't understand

Caught up in a world
Of I want and I want
Where the more I need
The less I see
Where still I crave you next to me

This feels so crazy
Like some washed up woman
Some bent over man
Fighting a cold wind
Tossed by each wave
Caught in the tide, drifting away

Feeling my heart cracking apart
Locked out of a world I came to adore
Paddling our boat with this broken oar

My heart is a wave pounding on shore
Part of me isn't so sure
Whether to dive into that wave
Or to climb this cliff
Behind where we lay

Where the sun still glistens
Where eagles fly
Where darkness has yet to swallow our lives
Where I can still touch you in my mind
Press my heart next to you one last time

Before this ocean wave
crashes
And buries our love
Leaving a soft shell to remember you by

I started the above poem a few days after I first heard/saw Shania Twain on VH1. They also had that first Diva's thing on that she starred in, about that time. So I went out and bought a few of the other female singer's tapes, along with a variety of Shania's. (honestly, I had not listened to much new music for about 20 years, until one glance at Shania turned my head totally around!!!) It was bazarre, I would go into my clay studio, unconditionally intent on making a dozen or two small wall sconces, which I make as a "bread and butter" item for small craft shows I occasionally do. The trouble was, I would get very little work done, some thought / opening line to a poem/song would fly by my head, and I'd be lost for hours scribbling out a poem on a scrap of paper. [I had not written any new poetry for years either.] Well, I was listening to some singer sing a 'breakup' song, when I thought, maybe I should try to write one. That's how this poem began, on a boxlid for clay. I ended up talking about a real relationship that had ended sadly years before, but that is the nature of these things. Hope you Enjoy, gary
